BATANGAS BEACHES: sample weekend Itineraries

creating a Batangas schedule is a challenging exercise. It’s something that I, born and raised in Batangas, has always known from the very beginning. Whenever a pal from Manila or other provinces would come check out and I would try to create one, I spend much much more time than I probably should. That’s especially true when it involves beach-hopping.

The good news is, when it concerns beaches, Batangas has a lot to offer. The bad news: Batangas is large and mountainous, and the best beaches are located so far aside from one another. Not to mention that there is a bigass lake smack in the middle of the map.

This post is actually one of the most requested topics, which tells us we’re probably not the only ones having a hard time. but someone’s gotta do it!

Here are some sample Batangas itineraries for day trip, overnight stay, and one for a long weekend.

Before that, please take note of the following:

In this post, we’re focusing on the beaches. We’ll create a separate messages for mountain treks!

Some itineraries will involve checking at a resort, others encourage camping. Some assumes touring DIY, others suggest taking a private boat because of time issues. These things are explained before each schedule is presented, so read read read.

The Estimated budget here is per person, but assumes you’re a group of four and you’ll be splitting costs. You can still bring the costs down if you’re a bigger group. For example, a private boat ride to Masasa beach from Anilao is P4500, but the boat can accommodate up to 10 people.

Anyway, here we go.

WHAT’S covered IN THIS GUIDE?

Itinerary 1: BATANGAS beach trail (3 Days)
Itinerary 2: Anilao and Tingloy (Overnight)
Itinerary 3: Masasa beach (Overnight)
Itinerary 4: fortune Island + Tagaytay (Overnight)

Itinerary 1: BATANGAS beach trail (3 Days)

Stops: Laiya, Malabrigo, Anilao, Tingloy
Estimated Budget: P6500

Laiya in San Juan, Batangas. photo by Winston Almendras
This schedule will take you to what I personally believe are the best beaches in Batangas: Laiya in San Juan, the pebble beach in Malabrigo in Lobo, Anilao in Mabini, and Masasa beach and Sombrero Island in Tingloy. You can do it by taking public transportation, but having your own automobile will show less expensive and much more efficient.

This involves checking in at a resort in Laiya and Anilao.

Itinerary 2: Anilao and Tingloy (Overnight)

Stops: Gulugod Baboy, Sombrero Island, Masasa Beach
Estimated Budget: P2500

Sombrero Island
Anilao is a barangay in Mabini best known for its dive sites, Mt. Gulugod Baboy (an easy climb), and lately, as a jump off point to the beaches and islands of Tingloy, a neighboring municipality.

This schedule will allow you to climb Mt. Gulugod Baboy in Anilao and camp there, and then come back down to go island hopping in Tingloy the next day. You’ll get to see Masasa Beach, Sombrero Island, and other beaches in the area.

Itinerary 3: Masasa beach (Overnight)

Stops: Masasa Beach, Sombrero Island, Masasa Beach
Estimated Budget: P1800

Masasa Beach
This one skips Anilao altogether and takes you straight to Masasa beach taking only public transportation. Masasa beach is arguably the best beach in Tingloy, attracting hordes of tourists because it became mainstream a few years ago. From here, you can also check out other beaches like Sombrero Island and Oscar beach from Masasa by hiring a small boat.

This also assumes you’ll be spending the night at a homestay in Tingloy.

More info: Masasa beach travel Guide

Accommodations are limited in Tingloy. If you’re not fond of homestays or camping, you may choose to stay in Anilao in mainland Batangas instead and just check out Masasa on a day tour. here are some of the less expensive best-rated hotels according to online users.

Itinerary 4: fortune Island + Tagaytay (Overnight)

Stops: Masasa Beach, Sombrero Island, Masasa Beach
Estimated Budget: P2000

Fortune Island used to be an exclusive island resort that has been abandoned years ago and is now left open to the public. It is best known for the Instagram-worthy an acropolis with Grecian pillars and statues.

Because boatmen typically refuse to sail the waters surrounding fortune Island past 2pm, numerous visitors choose to camp instead and get picked up the next morning. If you’re alright with that, this schedule is for you. and after a day with the ocean, head back to the highlands of Tagaytay to cap off the trip!

If you don’t want to rough it out, you can stay at a resort or hotel in Nasugbu instead. but prepare to spend more. here are some suggestions.

Itinerary 5: Laiya + Malabrigo (Overnight)

Stops: Laiya, Malabrigo Beach
Estimated Budget: P1000

San Juan’s Laiya is the poster beach of Batangas. It’s one of the most developed and cradles dozens of accommodations, from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts. It has a long, broad stretch of pearly white sand that has become a favorite for a weekend getaway, corporate events, and team-building activities.

But you can actually access Malabrigo in Lobo from Laiya too. This schedule will give you an overnight stay in Laiya beach and a quick stop at Malabrigo on your way back to Manila the next day.

Resorts in Laiya are typically expensive but there are rooms for rent in public areas. If you can’t find a place to stay in Laiya, you can also go camping in Malabrigo instead.

Itinerary 6: Malabrigo Day Trip

Stops: Malabrigo Beach
Estimated Budget: P1000

Malabrigo Beach
Malabrigo is tucked in the quiet corners of Lobo, Batangas. Unlike many beaches, it’s strewn not with fine sand but medium-sized pebbles. It may not be the most suitable for making sand castles, but it is still postcard-worthy, and its seclusion allows peace of mind and short-term escape from the crowd.

If you only have a day and you just want to see Malabrigo and its lighthouse, here’s a suggested itinerary.

More Info: how to get to Malabrigo

Itinerary 7: Sepoc Island Day Trip

Stops: Sepoc Beach, Sombrero Island
Estimated Budget: P1900

Sepoc Beach
First off, it’s not really an island. It’s just a short beach on the larger Maricaban Island, which also harbors Masasa Beach. many people assume it’s an island because there is no other way to get here easily than by boat. but unlike Masasa, it’s quieter and less crowded, primarily because it’s privately owned by the same company that runs Eagle point beach resort in Anilao.

Here’s a sample itinerary.

More info: Sepoc beach travel Guide

Hence, if you want to use the restroom and the kitchen and climb to the viewpoint — and it provides a wonderful vista — you have to book the trip with Eagle Point. You don’t need to book a room with them if you don’t intend to stay overnight, but you need to book the boat with them. Sombrero Island is along the way so you can ask the boatman to make a stop there although the island charges an entrance fee.

If you decide to stay overnight at Eagle Point, reserve below:

This isn’t purely about beaches, but this highlights the best of Batangas including Taal Volcano, Lipa City, Taal Town, Anilao, and Tingloy! and if you have much more time, you can even pass through Tagaytay in Cavite.

If you’re a music lover, then a trip to Nashville is absolutely in order. known as music City, the capital of Tennessee is one of the most fun cities to visit in the US. There are plenty of exciting things to do in Nashville, and we’ll cover some of the best in this post.

Of course, experiencing the music culture of the city is a must. With plenty of museums, record stores, venues, and festivals to choose from, you could easily plan your whole trip in Nashville around music.

That’s not all there is to do in Nashville, though. here you can also visit the Tennessee Capitol, a replica of the Parthenon, and the former home of a president. There are plenty of Nashville attractions to keep you busy during the day before the show starts!

Nashville absolutely crushes it when it pertains to wining and dining. Whether it’s some fiery hot chicken or some good ol’ southern BBQ, your tastebuds are in for a treat here. The city is also home to plenty of breweries, wineries, and distilleries when you want to wet your whistle.

I spent half a year living down the road in Murfreesboro and have traveled to Nashville several times in recent years. It’s absolutely one of my favorite cities and a place I’m always delighted to return to.

1. listen to live Music

Naturally, our list of what to do in Nashville begins with live music. While it’s popular for being the “Country music capital of the World,” there’s a lot a lot more to the music scene these days. On any given night out, you’re just as likely to find rock, pop, or electronic shows going on.

It doesn’t matter what night of the week it is. There’s always live music going on here in Nashville! The city is home to venues of all sizes hosting music of all genres. From dive bars with local bands trying to make it, to arenas packed full of adoring fans for popular pop singers, Nashville has it all.

Some of the best places to catch live music in Nashville include the Ryman Auditorium, Ascend Amphitheater, the station Inn, The Basement, and Marathon music Works. As I said, there’s music every night of the week here. check this calendar of events to see what’s playing.

Short in a timely manner in Nashville?

One of the best ways to get around to all of the things to do in Nashville when you’re short in a timely manner is to join the Hop-On-Hop-Off double-decker. In just one hour, you’ll see:

The Court of Flags, Nissan Stadium, the Parthenon at Centennial Park, back by the state Capitol and down lower Broadway. Some other sights you’ll see include the country music Hall of Fame, the Vanderbilt University, a lively farmers market, and the Grammy museum Gallery. learn a lot more here.

2. Take a walking Tour

One of the best things to do in Nashville is taking a walking tour. In my opinion, there’s no better way to get to know a city than by exploring it on your own two feet!

You have a few different options for seeing Nashville on foot. If you like a diy approach, click here to download a PDF that has two different routes for self-guided walking excursions of music City. Both excursions begin at Bridgestone Arena and cover 20 different sights. Whichever one you choose, you’ll get an exceptional introduction to the city.

If you’d rather opt for a guide and a group, check out complimentary excursions Nashville. They run excursions from Wednesday to Sunday at both 9 AM and noon. The 90-minute excursion hits lots of of the highlights of music City, and you’ll also get some useful recommendations from your local guide.

3. visit the country music Hall of Fame

The country music Hall of fame is absolutely one of the top Nashville attractions. It’s located ideal downtown and is a must-see when checking out music City.

There are always new exhibits pertaining to the museum, but their core permanent exhibit, Sing Me Back Home, tells the complete history of country music.

Before or after your visit to the museum, be sure to check out the music City walk of fame Park ideal across the street. It’s a bit of Hollywood in Nashville, with star-studded plaques honoring music legends.

The museum is open daily from 9 AM-5 PM. general admission tickets cost $25.95 for adults and $15.95 for children ages 6-12. There are also several options for add-ons, such as a excursion of historic studio B and show tickets for the CMA Theater. Click here to book your skip-the-line tickets.

4. check Out The Tennessee state Capitol and Museum

Nashville isn’t just the country music capital of the World. It’s also the capital of the state of Tennessee. As such, you can add a stop at the Tennessee state museum to your list of things to do in Nashville.

There are several informative exhibits here, ranging from the Civil war and Reconstruction to Tennessee Transforms. The latter covers the modern history of the state beginning after world war II.

Temporary exhibitions are always changing, with current ones on the history of food and the musical heritage of Tennessee. check their web site to read all about what’s on at the moment.

The museum is open from 10 AM-5 PM on Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. It stays open until 8 PM on Thursday and is only open from 1-5 on Sunday. best of all, it’s absolutely complimentary to visit! Click here to get directions.

The staff of the museum also uses complimentary guided excursions of the historic state Capitol building. These take place Monday to Friday at 9, 10, 11, 1, 2, and 3. opened back in 1859, it was created by the distinguished architect William Strickland. Tragically, he passed away during construction. as per his wishes, he was buried in the north facade of the building.

5. eat hot Chicken

There are certain dishes you just have to try when checking out American cities. A slice of pizza in new York, a hot pet dog in Chicago, jambalaya in new Orleans, and hot chicken in Nashville.

Just a word of alerting for you not familiar with hot chicken — when I say hot, I indicate hot! I’m talking seriously spicy. some of the best places to sample Nashville hot chicken include Prince’s and Hattie B’s.

I need to say I’m partial to the latter. Be careful here, as even ordering the medium can set your taste buds ablaze. If you’re crazy, choose their highest level of heat, which is humorously called “Shut the Cluck Up!”

There are a few Hattie B’s locations in Nashville, including one ideal near music Row. supplied you don’t overdo it on the spice level, eating hot chicken is absolutely one of the tastiest things to do in Nashville!

Looking for a lot more foodie fun? check out this highly rated food excursion of Nashville and take pleasure in the tasty treats on offer.

6. excursion a Distillery

Just as one need to eat hot chicken when in Nashville, trying some real deal Tennessee whiskey or moonshine is also a necessity. There are plenty of exceptional distilleries that you can visit to sample some fine local booze.

One solid choice is the Corsair Distillery. They actually have two locations in Nashville, both using excursions and tasting rooms. At their headquarters, you can sign up for a 30-minute excursion with five tastings for just $13.

Tours run every day except for Monday. Head to their web site to check out time available times and book your spot.

While it’s not my personal favorite, there’s no doubt that Jack Daniel’s is the most popular Tennessee whiskey. Their distillery is located about an hour and a half outside of Nashville in Lynchburg.

You can sign up for a full-day excursion that includes transportation, so you can take pleasure in all the whiskey you want!

Other good options in the city include Nashville Craft Distillery and Pennington Distilling Co.

7. visit The Grand Ole Opry

A trip to the Grand Ole Opry is absolutely one of the top things to do in Nashville. known as the “home of American music” and “the show that made country music famous,” this is the longest-running radio broadcast in the country. It started back in 1925 as a one-hour “barn dance” and has been an crucial part of the city’s culture ever since.

These days, the show broadcasts from the Grand Ole Opry House. shows take place every Friday and Saturday night, with additional performances on Tuesdays from December to March.

In addition to catching a show, you can also sign up for a excursion of the Opry. There are daytime backstage excursions as well as post-show backstage tours. Or, just get tickets to the show. check out ticket prices here.

When it pertains to Nashville attractions, it’s hard to top the Grand Ole Opry.

8. visit The Ryman Auditorium

For 30 years, the Grand Ole Opry had its home at the historic Ryman Auditorium. When they announced plans to step the Opry to a new home, the auditorium was slated for demolition. A push to save the Ryman began and lasted for several years. While it was successful, the building sat dormant for lots of years and soon began to deteriorate.

Renovations began in 1993 to bring it back to its rightful place as a world-class music venue. things came full circle with the return of the Grand Ole Opry to the Ryman for a benefit show in 1998. These days, the legendary auditorium hosts the Opry shows from November to January.

The Ryman is open daily from 9AM to 4PM. You can take a self-guided excursion for $25.95, or add an extra $5 to go backstage for a short guided excursion as well. Click here to book your tickets online. You can find the Ryman on the map and get directions here.

9. check Out Centennial Park

In addition to music City, another one of Nashville’s nicknames is “The Athens of the South.” It seems a bit odd until you venture over to Centennial Park, where you’ll find a full-scale replica of the Parthenon.

Originally a farm, this land has also been the state fairgrounds and a racetrack. It then became the site of the state’s Centennial Exposition in 1897 and transformed into a public park shortly thereafter. The Parthenon replica was originally indicated to be temporary, but over a century later it remains.

In addition to seeing a bit of Greece in middle Tennessee, you can also take pleasure in walking trails, Lake Watauga, a sunken garden, historical monuments, and much more. Click here to get directions.

10. visit The Belle Meade Plantation

One of the most interesting things to do in Nashville is paying a visit to the Belle Meade Plantation. This historic plantation dates back to 1807, when John Harding purchased the land and a cabin. He soon began to develop a plantation here, which he named Belle Meade — the beautiful Meadow.

Harding relied on slave labor to run his various services here, which included a cotton gin, sawmill, and blacksmith shop. When horse-racing became popular, he added thoroughbred housing and breeding to the list of services.

His kid William Giles Harding eventually inherited the property. He would go on to be very successful in this new venture, expanding the plantation and the crew of slaves.

After the Civil war ended and slavery was banned, some of the former slaves returned to work for pay. but the Panic of 1893 and resulting financial problems led the family to sell the plantation. half a century later, the state of Tennessee purchased it and transformed it into a museum.

The Belle Meade Plantation is open from Thursday to Tuesday from 9AM to 5PM. excursions cost $24 for adults during the week and $28 on the weekend. These even include a complimentary white wine tasting! It’s a bit far out of the city center so your best bet is renting a car or joining a excursion if you want to visit. Click here to get directions.

11. visit The Johnny cash Museum

After that interesting look into the history of Nashville, let’s get back to the music. one of the top things to do in Nashville is checking out the Johnny cash Museum.

To say that Johnny cash is a legend is an understatement. one of the best-selling artists of all time, he was inducted into three different music halls of fame! here you’ll find a huge collection of memorabilia and artifacts to get the whole life story of “The man in Black.”

The museum is open daily f

DON’T learn A foreign LANGUAGE

Updated: 3/15/2020 | March 15th, 2020

Many years ago, I went to the Taiwan lantern Festival. This annual event is hosted by the tourism Bureau. Throughout the country, people build large floats and structures that are like oversized lanterns (hence the name). It’s one of the greatest yearly events and lantern exhibits are hosted throughout the country.

I went with my guesthouse owner’s nieces and a Korean person who, like me, was staying there long-term. As they walked, they mostly spoke Chinese to each other. They were talking about the kid problems of one of the nieces (teenage angst and romance you when you are 16 is universal).

Though they were speaking a language I didn’t understand, I followed along a little. I laughed, I made some jokes, they understood, I understood.

As we walked around, I thought about how one of the things people always ask you about travel: “How are you different?”

It’s a hard question to answer because a lot of changes happen slowly and you rarely notice them. Today, after a decade of traveling the world, it’s easy to look back and see the lots of changes that I’ve undergone considering that I started backpacking. But, when you’re in the thick of it, you normally don’t see the big picture.

However, while at the lantern Festival, I realized one major difference: I had gotten a lot better at non-verbal communication.

From facial expressions to the tone of someone’s voice, I was able to get the gist of what people around me were saying. I didn’t need to know fluent Mandarin. This skill had crept so slowly into my life, so naturally, that it seemed like it had always been there.

Research shows that a minimum of 60% of our communication is non-verbal. We send signals with our body language, facial expressions, and tone of voice. You just don’t realize that when you’re at home, speaking your native language. but when you’re abroad, it’s something that you rely on. It’s a skill you develop, one you need if you don’t know the local language.

And while lots of regions of the world have different norms and customs and gestures, when it pertains to non-verbal communication, much of it is the same.

All the traveling I have done has helped me master non-verbal communication. Years of confused looks, pointing, sounds, miming, and pigeon English was what allowed me to get to the point of understanding people without using words.

With this skill, I could probably never learn another language again and still get by anywhere. It’s working now; they don’t speak English very well in Taipei but I get by. I point, grunt, act out things, and I manage.

Learning how to communicate without words is a travel skill that you can use throughout your life and in all parts of it. It can help you navigate bad situations, deal with people’s emotions, understand people, and play cool tricks with people at a bar. a lot of importantly, it will help you get by while on the road. You’ll be able to understand a person even when you don’t understand their language.

People’s facial expressions and body language tell just as much about what a person is feeling as the words they are saying.

Don’t get me wrong, I love learning languages. I’ll continue to learn them even if I can never master them. I’m taking Chinese classes next week and hope to learn French this summer. It’s good to know a few words in the local language, but you don’t need to learn the language fluently. You can get by without it.

Even if you never learn one word, you can still get by. I’m not saying never learn the language — you must make attempts. The locals will really appreciate it and it will help you learn a little about the culture (plus, it can make your trip a little smoother and help you avoid getting ripped off or scammed).

However, once in a while, don’t. practice some non-verbal cues. learn to get by with signs. learn to get by without words.

That’s my challenge to you.

Next time you are on the road, don’t learn the language. Don’t even speak. try to foster understanding and communication without words. Point, use facial expressions, pantomime, act out what you want, draw — whatever it takes. just don’t use words.

Forget the local language. Don’t make a vain attempt with a phrasebook to figure out how to buy food or ask what their name is. skip downloading the language for your Google translate app. forget it all.

Be bold and develop a skill that will help you in all areas of your life.

Because learning the non-verbal ways to communicate will help you communicate much better in all your areas of life and help you read situations and feelings for the rest of your life.

P.S. – And if you really do want to learn the language, here is a guide on how you can start speaking a foreign language from day ONE!

3 countries Filipinos can visit with a JAPAN VISA

Visa and immigration policies change often, so it’s best to contact the respective embassy to confirm if these privileges still apply. Also, this post is for Philippine passport holders who plan to visit as tourists only.

When we were invited to speak at the world tourism Forum in Istanbul in early 2016, our excitement rapidly morphed into worry when we realized Filipinos are required to get a visa to enter Turkey. It wouldn’t have been a problem any other day, but we were traveling abroad and we didn’t have much more time to apply for one. but a quick online search revealed that e-Visas were available for Filipinos with a valid multiple-entry Japan visa. It saved us. The application took only minutes.

Sadly, Turkey no longer accepts Japan visa as a supporting document. (They limited it to US, UK, Schengen, and Ireland visas.) but it opened our eyes that this whole visa game is much more complicated than we previously thought. Some countries are simpler to visit if you have existing visas from other countries. For example, having a us visa on your Philippine passport will allow you to access numerous other countries. and that’s good news for Filipino travelers given that the Philippine passport isn’t all that powerful. At the school of passport privileges, the Philippines doesn’t sit at the table where popular kids like Germany, Singapore, South Korea or the us have their lunch.

Japan is a dream destination for numerous Filipinos. Over the past few years, visa policies have been unwinded and much more forgiving, allowing numerous to visit Japan easily. but your Japan visa is much more powerful than you think! It comes with numerous other perks. With a valid Japan visa, your Philippine passport will get a bit much more edge.

Here are some countries that you can visit much much more easily with a Japan visa!

Montenegro
Mexico
Georgia

Montenegro

I discovered this on my recent trip to Europe’s Balkan region. My Schengen visa wasn’t multiple entry, which narrowed down the countries that I could visit in the area. but then I found out that Montenegro grants entry to travelers of certain nationalities, including Filipinos, offered that they have a valid multiple entry Japan visa!

I emailed their Ministry of foreign Affairs to confirm and they replied with this:

According to the short article 7 of the Decree on Visa Regime, holders of valid foreign travel files including a valid Schengen visa, a valid visa of commonwealth of Australia, the Republic of Bulgaria, the Republic of Croatia, Japan, Canada, new Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, Romania, the united states of America and the united kingdom of great Britain and northern Ireland may enter, pass through the territory and stay in Montenegro up to 30 days, and not longer than the expiry of visa if the period of validity of the visa is less than 30 days.

A few days later, I was in Montenegro! I went to Kotor and Perast and they were so beautiful!

Mexico

If you have a valid multiple-entry Japan visa on your Philippine passport, you don’t need to apply for a Mexico visa for stays shorter than 180 days. I learned about this because we get invited to a lot of press trips to Mexico at the last minute and we kept on declining thinking we would need to apply for a Mexico visa, which can take days. but when we finally took the time to research, we found out that we didn’t actually need one if we have a valid Japan visa.

According to the Mexican Embassy:

With the purpose of facilitating and promoting travel to Mexico, effective may 2016 all those foreign nationals, regardless of their nationality, going to Mexico for tourism, company or transit are NOT required to obtain a Mexican visa IF they hold a valid (non-expired) Visa or permanent residence of any of this countries: united states of America, Canada, Japan, united kingdom or Schengen area (European Union).

Ting ting ting! Japan is there! but this seems to good to be true so I emailed the embassy of Mexico in Manila to be absolutely sure! Here’s what they said.

So yep, it’s confirmed. You can enter Mexico for tourism with a Japan visa.

Georgia

Normally, a visa can be obtained online using Georgia’s E-Visa service website. but recently, they have allowed Filipino citizens to enter the country if their passport has a valid visa from any of the member states of the Organisation for economic Co-operation and development (OECD), which include (among others) the US, the UK, Australia, South Korea, and (wait for it) Japan!

Ushguli village and Mt. Shkhara, Georgia. photo by creative travel Projects.
I evaluated it by making a synthetic application at Georgia’s E-Visa site and here’s what it said when I entered my Japan visa as a supporting document:

In case the text is too small for mobile readers, here’s what it says: holders of valid visa orresidence permit of the (Philippines) are exempted from visa requirements. You can enter Georgia without a visa for 90 days in any 180-day period. Please note that you should present relevant valid visa or residence permit along with your travel document/passport at the moment of crossing Georgian border.

Kaulayaw Coffee, likewise understood as Kaulayaw Café or just Kaulayaw, is a rising homegrown dining as well as hangout location in Antipolo, Rizal. Throngs of locals as well as weekenders flock to the three-level building along Sumulong highway for the breathtaking views, astonishing sunset, as well as some great time.

“Kaulayaw” is a Tagalog word, meaning someone’s intimate companion, an apt moniker provided exactly how charming the configuration is. The founders developed the business around the core value of supporting regional farmers as well as suppliers, coming up with the tag line, “Ethically sourced, locally grown”.

And just like the place’s name, most of the products on the menu are named after Filipino nouns as well as adjectives including Makisig, Dalisay, Paraluman, Pagsamo, Sinta, Magayon, as well as Hiraya, among others.

What are the operating hours of Kaulayaw?

1:00 PM – 10:00 PM
Monday to Friday

7:00 AM – 10:00 PM
Saturday to Sunday

Notes:

The opening hours may change, particularly during these extraordinary times, so please inspect the Facebook page or get in touch with the administration before visiting.

To fit everybody on the waiting list, it may close earlier than usual on some days because of the long queue.

When is the very best time to visit?

Weekdays, late afternoon, in time for the sunset as well as dinner.

Here’s the view of the sunset when we visited.

View of Metro Manila from Kaulayaw Coffee at Sunset. picture by Vins Carlos.
Weekdays, since there has a tendency to be a surge of clients on weekends.

Late afternoon, since the view of the sunset right here is spectacular, to state the least. The cafe overlooks Metro Manila as well as the rich greenery in between. It’s likewise breathtaking under the sun as well as in the evening, however it is during the shift from day to night that it gets magical, when the setting sun paints the skies with pink, purple, as well as orange. This will let you appreciate the view during the day, at sunset, as well as at night.

That said, many clients are likewise after the exact same thing so expect more people.

If visiting on a weekend or holiday, are available in the morning, before lunchtime, as well as after lunchtime. By the way, Saturday night is acoustic night.

Do I requirement a reservation?

As of writing, Kaulayaw does not accept reservations.

Prior to our visit, we contacted them however were told that they only accept walk-ins.

We hope they reevaluate accepting reservations on peak days. more on that later.

How long is the waiting time for a table?

That depends upon the day as well as time of your visit.

The personnel mentioned that it usually doesn’t take long on weekdays, particularly on dead hours like 3 to 5pm. however if you see on a weekend, expect to wait long. In our case, we waited 1.5 hours. We visited on a Saturday, shown up at 4:30 pm, as well as we got seated at 6 pm.

Here’s exactly how to get a seat, based on our personal experience.

Upon arrival, approach the personnel by the door as well as get listed. On hectic days, expect to see a long queue. However, don’t mind the line yet. Go directly to the personnel as well as indication up. That’s the “queue” that matters. If you autumn in line very first as well as you don’t get listed, they will never phone call your name.

Once listed, wait on your name to be called. On lean days, this shouldn’t take as well long. however on weekends, this can take over an hour. utilize this idle time to utilize the restroom, inspect out the menu online, as well as fill out the forms. There are two waiting areas: one inside as well as one outside. The one outside is arranged like a queue, which is why first-timers promptly autumn in line without getting listed.

Once called, comply with the personnel to your assigned table. Kaulayaw is housed in a three-story building as well as each floor is quite wide. The personnel will ask you if you’re okay with the table. You can decline if you don’t like it, however you’ll wait a bit longer for the next table to free up. Note, however, that regardless of your table, you are free to approach the edge at any type of time for a much better view.

When we arrived, there was already a quite long queue developing in front of the building. There was a personnel member by the door. We fell in line as well as waited for our turn.

When we lastly reached the door after a long time of queueing, we realized that the physical queue does not matter at all. One has to get listed to be called. We didn’t understand this — there were no indications about this as well as the personnel never reminded the people on the line. We ended up waiting even longer.

We hope they reevaluate accepting reservations (even with an appointed length of time) on weekends as well as holidays, particularly during the pandemic. It’s just more effective as well as a great deal safer. This will prevent wasting customers’ time, crowding at the waiting area, as well as exposure.

Are youngsters allowed?

No. quoting the FB page statement published on January 13, “A gentle reminder, guests ages 15 as well as below are not enabled as well as will not be accepted in the cafe for everyone’s safety.”

While we were waiting, there was somebody who wished to dine however with youngsters as well as they were told that they might not accept them, so it is being implemented (at least when we were there).

The food is one more story though. We ordered Alpas (Buffalo poultry Wings), poultry Satay with Fried Egg & Peanut Sauce, barbeque Pork Ribs with Fried Egg, as well as Bahaghari (Nachos Supreme). Although they were tasty, much of what was served to us might utilize some more cooking time, particularly the poultry wings. any type of other time, we would have sent them back to the kitchen area to be cooked longer however we ran out of time. It was potentially just a one-off as well as we were just unlucky. It wasn’t that much of an problem for us since we were not there for the food, to begin with.

But come for the view as well as the drinks! I would gladly return as well as bring a few of my other friends.

A-MA TEMPLE: Tracing the roots of Macau

despite all the unrelenting developments in Macau, the A-ma temple remains practically untouched.

The oldest temple in Macau,  the A-Ma temple was built in 1488 under the Ming Dynasty in honor of A-Ma (also called Mazu or Matsu), the goddess of the sea. It is believed that she helped fishermen and sailors to reach safety during a storm. Seafarers prayed to her to guide them during the journey.

The temple grounds are divided into six sections. The gate pavilion was the first to greet me and steal my attention. The granite gate is guarded by stone lions and crowned with a roofing system ridge (which looked like horns or a boat), where small animal statues sit. Passing through the gate, I climbed a concrete winding path on the slope of Barra Hill. Every now and then I stopped to admire the words painted on the boulders securely scattered around the site. It didn’t matter how intently I looked , I still failed to understand any of them for they were Chinese characters. I didn’t know it then, but these rocks tell poems and short tales. On top awaited the Hall of Guanyin, made entirely of bricks and topped with a flush gable.

The other structures include the Hall of Benevolence, built in 1488 with granite and bricks. Fronting it is the prayer Hall, which took shape in 1605. also known as the first palace of the holy Mountain, the prayer Hall was constructed in honor of Tian Hou. and then there’s the Zhengjiao Chanlin Pavilion, the most arresting in terms of design and overall appearance. It cradles a shrine also dedicated to Tian Hou and a retreat house. It boasts an ornate facade gate featuring intricately carved wall sculptures. The last structure is the Memorial Arch that towers near the front edge of the site.

Most visitors come here to light joss sticks and say a prayer

Spiral joss sticks
I wandered around the dark red houses and squeezed my way into the growing crowd at the site. many visitors had lit joss sticks in their hands and made stops at each pavilion to say a prayer. In one corner I stumbled upon spiral little things, which I could not figure out what exactly until someone lit one of it and the smell of incense floated in the air.

Before I left, I stood in the middle of Largo do Pagode da Barra for one last look at the temple. I stared at this ancient structure long enough to not remember how long. Its warm vibrance was an oddity in the cold grayness under the shadow of the Macau Tower sticking out in the background. located in the southeastern suggestion of the peninsula, it is a bit isolated, making it a tiny isle of silence in the bustling, wrecking ocean that is the city center. The land took its name from here when the Portuguese first beached. somehow this place remains to anchor the wildly ambitious city to the ground. and in this case, it is a good thing, a very good thing.

HOW TO EXPERIENCE CUBA ON A budget plan

Posted: 11/28/2019 | November 28th, 2019

As a Cuban-American, Talek Nantes has had a great deal of experience traveling around Cuba. There’s a great deal more to the country than just all-inclusive resorts! In this guest post, she offers an in-depth breakdown of exactly how to travel around Cuba like a local.

I’ve been traveling between Cuba as well as the us since I was born. (Actually, even before I was born: my mom came to the specifies when she was expecting with me. I like to state I was made in Havana as well as born in the USA.)

As a Cuban-American who composed a book on the country as well as runs tours there, I’ve made it my objective to share my appreciation for Cuban culture with everybody who wishes to experience it. as well as I want to make sure that enjoying this gorgeous island is accessible to all.

People often ask me if Cuba is expensive.

It doesn’t have to be. It can be rather an inexpensive location to visit.

From obvious tried-and-true advice, like eat at places at least three blocks away from prominent tourist sites, to little-known tips only the locals know, here’s exactly how to experience Cuba on a budget.

1. exactly how to save money on Cuban currency exchanges

Up up until January 1, 2021, Cuba utilized to have two currencies. That double currency system has stopped to exist as well as has been replaced by a single currency, the CUP, likewise understood as the peso. present rates are approximately 24 cup to the us dollar.

Once in Cuba, you should exchange money at the flight terminal “CADECA.” A CADECA is the official government exchange entity with places throughout the country. keep in mind that you will requirement your passport in order to exchange currency at any type of CADECA.

Exchange only sufficient currency to get you to your lodging — a taxi to Havana will expense you about $30 USD — then exchange more at the CADECAs in town, as they have much better rates. prevent exchanging currency at banks as well as hotels, as these offer less favorable rates.

US citizens should be conscious that credit history cards drawn on us banks are not accepted in Cuba as well as ATMs cannot dispense money from us banks. Therefore, us citizens must bring sufficient money with them to last the entire trip.

2. exactly how to save money on lodging in Cuba

For the very best value for your money, you can’t beat a casa particular.

Casas particulares, or casas for short, are the houses of regional Cubans who lease spaces to visitors like a B&B. You can lease a space in a personal house for an typical of US$30 per night.

The finest part of staying with a Cuban household is that you can have an authentically Cuban experience. You eat with them, hang out in their living room, play with their youngsters or pets. You’re treated like one of the household while you are there. That’s a great deal more rewarding than staying at a sterile hotel.

It’s simple to book a casa. You can reserve on Airbnb or any type of number of similar on the internet sites, though Airbnb frequently has the largest selections. You should pre-book a casa from house at least for your very first night’s stay in Cuba. when in Cuba you can book the complying with nights yourself either with your casa hold or just by looking for a home with the casa indication (a blue anchor with a roof on a white background) as well as just knocking on the door.

Otherwise, hostels will be your finest choice for saving money. Some top-rated Havana hostels include the following:

Cuba 58 Hostel

Casa Rene & Madelyn

Hostal DRobles

Casa Novo guest House

Hostal Corazón del Mundo

Casa Zeila

Prices per night variety from around 5 to 15 CUC, though most are around 11 CUC.

I discover casas to be the very best lodging option. A hostel may be cheaper, however there are many casas with hostel pricing, so you get the very best of both worlds, low expense plus interaction with a regional family. Isn’t the connection with other cultures one of the primary reasons we travel?

3. the very best locations to eat in Cuba without breaking the bank

The finest locations to eat in Cuba are paladares. These are privately had (vs. government-owned) restaurants. There are all kinds of paladares, from high-end establishments in renovated mansions to hole-in-the-wall stands.

Traditional dishes you will discover at paladares include arroz con pollo (chicken as well as rice), ropa vieja (shredded beef), as well as lechón (roast pork). typical drinks include the traditional mojito, daiquiri, as well as Cuba Libre. Fruit juices are likewise easily available. The regional beers, Bucanero as well as Cristal, are extremely good.

Any guidebook will point out the paladares. You can likewise discover them in the A La Mesa app.

Typical costs (in CUCs) for meals in paladares are as follows:

High-end paladar:

Lunch: 10–25

Dinner 15–35

Mid-range paladar:

Lunch: 7–10

Dinner: 10–25

Some of my preferred paladares in Havana include Doña Eutemia, near the cathedral, Los Mercaderes on Mercaderes street in Old Havana, as well as San Cristóbal, where us president Obama had lunch. A typical meal at one of these will expense about 15–20 CUC.

Street vendors are likewise discovered throughout the country as well as offer bit sandwiches, pizza, croquettes, pastries, as well as other snacks for 1 to 3 CUC. The food is not great, however it definitely is budget-friendly.

4. Cuban transportation on a budget plan

Transportation is likely to be your biggest expense, with taxis being the most common. rule number one for getting around in Cuba is to negotiate before getting in. tell the driver where you want to go, or show him in composing as well as ask exactly how much (“¿Cuánto?”). Whatever the driver says, counter with a couple of CUCs lower. The drivers are utilized to this; they generally begin at a higher rate, anticipating that they will end up with a lower fee.

Yellow taxis are government-run (vs. privately owned). These are utilized by tourists as well as tend to be the most expensive.

Coco-taxis are essentially motorcycles with a cover shaped to look like a yellow coconut (hence the name), as well as they are everywhere. They tend to be cheaper however can only take two people at a time.

Bici-taxis are rickshaw-like bicycles that’ll take you around Old Havana.

Another choice is the colectivo, or collective taxi. These are vehicles that travel hectic thoroughfares within city limits, choosing up as well as dropping off people as they go along. A trip from one end of a busy, central street to the other, or anywhere in between, will expense about half a CUC. The taxi is showed as much as six people.

Buses are overcrowded, unreliable, as well as not air-conditioned however they are extremely cheap. They travel major routes mainly outside Old Havana.

Typical transportation costs:

Yellow government taxi: 10 CUC within city limits

Coco-taxi: 5 CUC within city limits; only fits 2 people

Bici-taxi: 2 CUC per person; only fits 2 people; not motorized

Collective taxi: half a CUC per trip in a shared taxi

Bus: about 0.20 CUC

A fun method to check out a huge city like Havana is by taking a tour in a traditional American convertible from the ’50s, however at 40 to 50 CUC an hour, they aren’t extremely budget-friendly.

5. staying linked in Cuba without paying a fortune

Internet gain access to in Cuba is iffy. It is not offered everywhere, as well as where it is, it is unreliable.

The finest method to stay linked is to purchase an Web connection card, offered in increments of 1 CUC per hour, at the regional ETECSA, the Cuban government’s telecommunications office with branches around the island. You utilize the login as well as password on the card to link your phone or computer.

You can likewise purchase an Web connection card at most high-end hotels, however the expense can be as high at 7 CUC per hour, so buying your card at an ETECSA is a big saving.

Once you have your card, discover a place where you can connect. most parks have connectivity, as do areas around ETECSA offices. just look for groups of people huddled over their phones.

Higher-end hotels likewise offer Wi-Fi at outrageous fees.

If you don’t utilize up your Web time, the leftover will be saved on your card as well as you will be able to utilize it again.

A typical everyday budget
For a typical day in Havana, Cuba’s most costly city, you can expect to budget plan as follows:

Breakfast at your casa: 5 CUC

Street food snacks: 2–5 CUC

Lunch at a paladar: 5–7 CUC

Dinner at a paladar: 5–10 CUC

Alcoholic beverage: mojito: 2–3 CUC, beer: 2 CUC, rum: 5 CUC/bottle

Room in a casa: typical 30 CUC

Intracity taxi: 2–10 CUC

Museum entrance fee: 2–8 CUC

Entrance charge to a music venue: free or 2–10 CUC

Internet connection card 1–2 CUC

To be on the risk-free side as well as leave yourself a bit space to splurge, budget plan 100 CUC/day. keep in mind you may want to purchase the world-famous cigars as well as rum. The regional art you discover at the many galleries around town may likewise charm to you.

Traveling outside of Havana
When traveling outside Havana, you’ve got a couple of options. the most practical as well as costly is to reserve a taxi that will pick you up at your casa as well as provide you door to door. Your casa hold or hostel or hotel personnel can arrange one for you.

Another choice is the national bus service, which extends across the entire country. The buses are air-conditioned, as well as the costs are extremely reasonable. costs from Havana to prominent destinations are as follows:

Havana to Viñales: 12 CUC

Havana to Trinidad: 25 CUC

Havana to Varadero: 10 CUC

Havana to Santiago, on the far side of the island: 51 CUC

You requirement to purchase your tickets at the Viazul bus station at Avenida Independencia #101, at the corner of 19 de Mayo. The buses will take you to the bus stations in your destination city, which are generally in extremely central places practical to anywhere you want to go.

There are vehicle rental companies throughout Cuba with which you can organize a self-drive tour. However, keep in mind that the roads outside Havana can be in extremely bad condition as well as difficult to navigate. With simple transportation within the huge cities as well as practical bus service between cities, a vehicle rental may not be your most affordable option.

Domestic flights are quite unreliable as well as I wouldn’t suggest it.

***
Before traveling to Cuba, us citizens should inspect the travel requirements. regular tourism is prohibited for us citizens. All us visitors must travel to Cuba under one of 12 us government-approved categories. “Support for the Cuban People” is the most commonly utilized classification as well as can be chosen when buying an airline ticket.

Experiencing Cuba on a budget plan definitely has its challenges, however it is totally worth it.

Cuba gets under your skin quickly. It bewitches as well as beckons you to check out more of it.

No matter exactly how many times I return to Cuba I always discover something to amaze me; a new art venue, a remarkable piece of 18th-century architecture, or an ingenious handle traditional Cuban cuisine.

Cuba is a safe, gorgeous country with welcoming people as well as a interesting culture. put it on your must-visit listing as well as you won’t be disappointed.

Travel advice For Beginners: a guide to Airports, documents & flying

There are numerous things to believe about when planning to go on a trip. It may noise simple sufficient – book a flight, go to the airport, as well as take off. But, there can be many documents required, security checks to do, as well as things to believe about – both before arriving at the airport, as well as during the check-in process.

In this guide for novices I’m going to share my advice on the logistics of figuring out precisely what documents are required in order to take a flight, as well as what you do when you’re actually at the airport. We’ve been at this for almost 8 years, so I have some understanding to pass your method ?

Passport Validity as well as Requirements

Always make sure that your passport has sufficient blank pages left in it for the duration of your trip. even though more as well as more countries are enabling electronic visas, some countries need you to purchase a full-page visa sticker, while others just provide you a little stamp on entry. Thankfully, there are numerous visa free countries to select from as well.

Have at least 3 blank pages left in your passport when going on a short trip, as well as 6 when going on a longer one.

A visa stamp in a passport for the Philippines
Another important thing is to make sure that you have the needed amount of time left on your passport before its expiry date. All countries have rules as well as regulations regarding this.

For example, if you are boarding a flight with a passport from Canada, the united states of America, or the UK, and are flying to France, then you are needed to present a passport that is be valid for at least three months beyond the date of expected departure from the Schengen area. This is France’s law, other countries may have different regulations – always check.

For travel to France:

From the Canadian government travel site – Travel.gc.ca: “Canadians are needed to present a passport that must be valid for at least three months beyond the date of expected departure from the Schengen area.”

From the united states government travel site – Travel.state.gov: “PASSPORT VALIDITY: Must be valid for at least three months beyond your organized date of departure from the Schengen area.”

From the united kingdom government travel site – Gov.uk: “Your passport should be valid for the suggested duration of your stay; you don’t requirement any type of extra period of validity on your passport beyond this”.

So, as a Canadian or American, if you are planning on staying in France for 3 months, you must likewise have one more 3 months offered before your passport expires, for a overall of 6 months.

This stipulation is strictly enforced, as well as if you don’t have ample time left before your passport expires, you will be rejected boarding your flight (we discovered this the difficult way).

Flight Ticket

These days, whatever is done electronically, so you don’t really requirement to print out your booking itinerary. You can just show up at the airline check-in desk as well as hand them your passport, as well as they will look you up on their computer.

Many airlines as well as countries need that you show proof of a return (or exit) flight out of the country you plan on travelling to. Otherwise, you may be rejected boarding.

One such example is Thailand.

From the Canadian government travel site – Travel.gc.ca: “Immigration officials can need visitors who are entering without acquiring a visa in advance to show a return or onward ticket”.

From the united states government travel site – Travel.state.gov: “Thai immigration officials may request your onward/return ticket, as well as airlines may request this info when you book or inspect in”. (A further note is that for U.S. passport holders must have a passport valid for 6 months after the date of entry into Thailand).

From the united kingdom government travel site – Gov.uk: “Immigration officials in Thailand may ask you for proof of onward travel. Some airlines have refused to board passengers without evidence of onward travel”.

As you can see, if you are planning on travelling to Thailand, you will need to show proof that you plan on really leaving Thailand – even though you may never want to!

Maybe you plan on leaving by method of bus to neighbouring Cambodia, but aren’t sure which date you want to leave, so you plan to book a last-minute bus when you are actually in Thailand.

This doesn’t satisfy the regulations. So what do you do?

You can book a flightwith an airline or booking service that has free cancellation (Expedia has free cancellation for 24 hours). book the flight, have the confirmation emailed to yourself as well as / or printed out, as well as then cancel the flight after you have got the confirmation as well as documentation.

Just make sure that the flight you are booking out of Thailand departs Thailand within 30 days after landing in the country! immigration officials won’t accept return flights if they are beyond your maximum stay (in Thailand this is 30 days).

If you don’t want to book as well as cancel a flight, just head into a travel agent as well as have them print you off an itinerary.

You don’t want to be rejected boarding as well as have to sleep in the airport!

*Note: This occurred to us when we were trying to fly from Vancouver to Bangkok on our very first backpacking trip. Korean Air wouldn’t let us board the flight. In a panic, we bought a inexpensive AirAsia flight from Thailand to Cambodia for a couple hundred dollars. These days, however, we just book a flight as well as then cancel it, as explained above, or print out an itinerary without really booking a flight.

Travel Insurance

It’s great method to always travel with insurance, however in some cases, it’s obligatory to show proof of a policy before entering the country.

A prime example of this is when travelling to Cuba. If you don’t have insurance, you will be required to purchase this at the flight terminal when you show up – which costs around $5 / day, as well as you may not understand precisely what you’re getting with your policy.

Purchase an insurance coverage policy ahead of time to prevent this uncertainty.

[widget id=”text-83″]
Luggage Allowance

These days, there are baggage charges popping up everywhere. If you are able to travel with just a carry-on bag, you will be able to prevent the just recently added luggage charges charged by many airlines.

Except for Southwest as well as JetBlue, all other major carriers in the united states fee for every inspected bag. The rates begin at $20 / bag as well as go upwards (usually $25).

On the budget plan airlines such as Ryan Air, simple Jet, Air Asia, Norwegian Airlines, as well as IndiGo (to name a few), no free baggage is offered. Norwegian really charges $53 / inspected bag (!).

Outside of the USA, many other major airlines still offer free inspected baggage… for now.

Often you can pay for your bags when booking your flight online. other times, they will need you to pay for your baggage at the check-in counter. Make sure to have the correct amount of cash with you, as well as / or your credit history card.

On one more note, you will have to pay additional if you go over the weight allowance! always inspect your airline’s baggage terms as well as conditions before setting off. You can even pick up a handheld scale for your bag to inspect its weight before arriving at the airport.

Checking-in, Customs as well as Immigration

Airports can be overwhelming – particularly the major worldwide ones. enable yourself great deals of additional time to figure out where you requirement to be to ensure that you don’t miss your flight. We always show up at the flight terminal 3 hours before our flight departure time (unless it’s a little airport).

When you very first show up at the airport, have a look at the large ‘Departure as well as Arrival’ screen that you’ll discover in numerous areas around the airport. This will show all of the flights that are departing as well as arriving, both currently, as well as within the next few hours.

Once you discover your flight number on the huge screen, look for the check-in counter number (or letter), in addition to your entrance number. Head to the check-in counter very first in order to get your boarding pass for the flight, as well as to decrease off your bags.

If you don’t see your flight on the screen, don’t panic. frequently they don’t listing the flight up until 2 hours before departure. look around for the counter of the airline that you’re flying with as well as ask them when you can inspect in.

Once at the open counter, the airline attendant will evaluate your luggage, scan your passport as well as provide you your boarding pass.

If you have a linking flight, always verify with the attendant that your luggage will be inspected with to your final destination. feel free to ask as many concerns as you requirement – you want to feel comfortable as well as specific about what’s happening with your belongings!Once you’ve dropped off your bags as well as you have your boarding pass, you can make your method to security. You will have to put your carry-on bags with a conveyor belt to be scanned, and you will have to walk with a security scanner as well.

On the other side of the security check, collect your bag as well as your possessions as well as make your method to your gate. The entrance number is listed on your boarding pass, as well as likewise on the screens discovered around the airport. when you’ve discovered your gate, all that’s delegated do is wait on the statement to board your flight!

*Note: I suggest having a plastic envelope / sleeve of some kind to hold your passport, boarding pass, flight itinerary (if printed), as well as pens for filling out customs as well as immigration develops (this is generally done on the airplane before arriving at your destination). This is a useful product to keep whatever organized on chaotic travel days.
