A travel Collection: What Do Your preferred blog writers gather From Abroad?

This is a extremely special post. It’s the very first collaborative short article we’ve ever had on our site! Some remarkable blog writers from our travel neighborhood have joined together to chat about their travel collections. What do we gather during our adventures abroad? Wondering what’s in our backpacks after each country we visit? right here are some answers:

The world D:

We tend to gather one product from each country we visit. We either ship it house if we are on the road for a while or pack it in our suitcase to restore with us. We like to purchase larger products like statues or drums rather than bit trinkets. That method they can can ended up being a good piece of art for our non-existent house. best now we have many of our travel products on screen at my parent’s house. right here are a couple of products we have out in my parent’s basement from Bali to Jordan as well as Kenya to Mongolia. All are locally purchased as well as all have a bit story behind them to add to our memories.

– Deb & Dave of The world D

Nomadic Samuel:

Over the years I’ve ended up being less materialistic than in the past.  Travel has taught me numerous lessons; one of the biggest being that it’s difficult on the back to bring around a heavy load.  With that being said, I’ve just recently realized I have a quirky attraction to distinct as well as cool t-shirts.  While going to Malacca, Malaysia I discovered a brilliantly colored Orangutan home painted in neon colors.  To state it stuck out like a sore thumb would be an understatement.  As I ventured inside, I discovered the regional Malaysian artist Charles Cham, was selling a plethora of different individually developed tee shirts in bright neon colors.  One in specific caught my attention; it had an huge orangutan deal with as the primary outline with screaming loud eco-friendly as the predominant color.  I couldn’t just purchase one.  I ended up going out of the store with 5 different tee shirts which rendered my ‘other t-shirts’ instantaneously obsolete.

– Sam of Nomadic Samuel

That Backpacker

When it concerns collecting souvenirs, I have a thing for scarves. solid shades or with patterns, bright colours or soft tones, silk or cashmere, I gather them all. I didn’t recognize I had such a huge thing for scarves up until one of my trainees in Korea asked me, “Teacher, why you always wear scarf?” Part of the reason that I like collecting scarves is that I can wear them practically year round, plus they make excellent mementos for household as well as friends. The picture I included shows just exactly how numerous scarves I have handled to gather over the past 4 months in Southeast Asia…but it’s okay, they’re not all for me!

– Audrey of That Backpacker

eTramping:

As a budget plan traveler, I try not to spend as well much money on souvenirs. However, I like to treat myself with vibrant bracelets which include appeals from my adventures. Currently, I have a collection of much more than 100 different bracelets I bought in different countries I travelled to, from Paris, Rome to Beijing as well as Siem Reap. Every single bracelet brings back fantastic memories which I will cherish forever. My preferred one is a beautiful wooden bracelet I purchased in Lhasa, the funding city of Tibet. It has been handcrafted as well as painted with five common for Tibetan religious beliefs colors – blue symbolizes sky, eco-friendly air, red fire, white water as well as yellow earth. I commonly provide some bracelets to my finest good friends as a gift if they truly like it.

– Agness of eTramping

Global Grasshopper:

We try as well as gather something that represents the country although many of the time this has are available in the type of a small, adorable toy! Tokyo is quickly the very best location for this type of collection as well as our preferred ‘kawaii’ has certainly come from there. gray likewise collects leaflets as well as examples of a country’s graphic style style – excellent motivation for his design.

– Becky & gray of Global Grasshopper

Traveling Canucks:

We very first started collecting masks when we resided in Malaysia back in 2004. because then, our collection has grown to over 40 masks. many of the masks were bought at street markets, with our preferred masks coming from Costa Rica, Peru as well as Italy.

-Cam & Nicole of traveling Canucks

Mostly Victoria:

Up up until just recently our travels were always vacations (as numerous as we might capture into our years annual leave allowance). We might shop us much aswe liked & if we really desired it, we’d just pay the additional weight at the airport to fly it home. But now that we are “backpackers” or at least we are travelling with a backpack (I’m not so sure that we are fully qualified as “proper backpackers” just yet!). This has required me to be much more disciplined – I know that if I purchase something – I have to bring it around with me! So I started to gather bracelets – I get one (inexpensive!) bracelet per destination. It abates my ‘need to shop’ as well as yet they are little sufficient to pack away easily. Though, in reality, I just wear them so it takes up no additional space at all! I’ve likewise recently started to gather flowers – I ‘press’ them in the back of my journal where they will dry out during our trip. a few of these will be added to my scrap-book, some will be connected to my “Wanderlust Board” – a huge pinboard in our dining space back home.

– Victoria of MostlyVictoria.

The professional Vagabond:

I’ve ended up being a minimalist over the past few years. practically whatever I own can be stuffed into 2 backpacks. So collecting travel souvenirs is not a concern of mine. however other than photographs, I do gather something from each country. Paper money. I’ve been to 13 countries so far (I travel extremely slowly) as well as have saved some currency from each. except Panama, since they really utilize us currency. My preferred expense is one that’s no longer in circulation. A $100 Cordoba note from Nicaragua that’s been stamped with a new denomination of $100,000 Cordobas. After the Nicaraguan revolution, inflation jumped as much as 400% and the government just stamped its old currency with new values.

– Matt of The Expert Vagabond

A enthusiasm as well as A Passport:

Do I gather anything in particular, no.  But I gather photos as well as memories. Instead of overloading our house up with chotchkies (which I dislike with a passion), I cherish my photos as well as utilize my preferred ones to make picture books. I always make sure to purchase the exact same size, as well as now we have a good little collection of books on our coffee table.  Friends as well as household like going with them, and it’s perfect, partially since I like showing off the beautiful pictures from our trip, and since the picture book does the narration. now I don’t requirement to tell the same stories over as well as over! ?

– Jessica of A enthusiasm as well as A Passport

A Cruising Couple

If there is one thing that makes us weak at the knees, grabbing our wallets before we’ve had time to believe over the practicalities, it is artwork. anywhere we travel, we always try to discover one piece of authentic artwork. We have oil paintings from Paris, Batik from Indonesia, calligraphy from Taiwan-and those are just a few of our favorites! These pieces of art may not be practical best now, however someday we hope to have a worldly display, a pointer of our preferred locations as well as an exhibition of our travels. We likewise like motivating as well as promoting regional artists!

– Dan & Casey of A Cruising Couple

Last, however not least…

Goats On The Road:

During our very first 2 long trips, we purchased a souvenir that would represent each culture we had been to – a sheesha pipe from the middle East, a lovely painting from Africa as well as wooden statues as well as bowls from SE Asia. I utilized to likewise gather a shot glass (and fill it with sand from the beach) from each country as well as Nick would purchase a T-shirt. We’ve because realized that since we don’t have a home, there’s no point in storing all of our mementos in a box back in Canada! So, now I gather a bracelet from each country (just a affordable one that I wear all the time), a badge with the country flag on it as well as one piece of paper money – badges as well as paper don’t evaluate anything! Nick collects a coin from each country we go to, which evaluates a bit bit, however not as well much. These are our preferred mementos!

-Dariece & Nick of Goats On The Road

There you have it. because many of us bring our lives on our backs, we’re all about things that evaluate extremely little! mementos as well as trinkets produce some excellent memories as well as are good to gather while abroad, however the very best mementos are the pictures we take as well as the memories we keep in our minds as well as in our hearts.

Do you gather anything from your travels? If so, what? If not,  why?! Leave a comment below.

LAUNCHES, LUNCHES as well as PARK LIFE celebrations

As we enjoy September slip by like the stealthy month-cat she is, the stark horror that it’s getting to the last 100 days of the year dawns on us.

You can indication up ideal here!

Today, Mrs romance as well as I are at the lovely Chiswick restaurant in Woollahra in Sydney’s east. We’re right here to inspect out our good friends at Olympus’ new camera. as well as to eat exceptional food. however mainly the cam – honest!

Olympus has been establishing their mirrorless variety for many years now – we ourselves utilize OM-D E-M cameras for shooting as well as they’re amazing.

This is Olympus’ new E-PL8 Pen camera, which has some quite great functions as well as some extremely elegant completes too. We both like the tan leather look.

I believe my hands are a bit huge to utilize one of these appropriately (think Berk from Trapdoor), however for travel, celebrations as well as daily use, this is a quite great option.

Just a couple of the tasty morsels we’re enjoying at the Chiswick while we’re discovering a lot more about the new Olympus Pen camera. It’s the very first time I’ve been right here (unlike Mrs Romance, who seems to find right here all the time the method she’s talking!), however I hope it’s not the last!

These Olympus E-PL8 Pen cameras truly are extremely good. They’ve got so lots of of the features of the full-size OM-D cameras – including a extremely cool selfie flip-out screen function – in a system that’s lighter, smaller as well as a lot more streamline. extremely impressed. a lot of cameras this size are just those compact point-and-shoots, however this one’s got interchangeable lens abilities as well as everything. Hmm.

Quite enjoying the foliage of this Olympus launch! It’s interesting to be one of the very first people on Australia to hear about this excellent new bit camera, as well as to be at the Chiswick as well has me smiling!

Launch Number 2!

This evening we’re at the Australian Heritage hotel in the Rocks learning about the 12th annual Beer Fest celebration that’ll be happening in October.

Friday 14th to Sunday 16th October will see the Australian Heritage – one of Australia’s oldest pubs – offer over 30 different breweries from across Australia. There’ll be things like blind tastings, expos, brewer talks as well as brand new beers available, plus food stalls, in the pub as well as on the street outside too.

There’s a great deal of beer fun about to occur in October, as well as this is absolutely one to keep in mind.

Love the sky over Sydney this evening. It’s the evening of three of our good friends – one of whom is Mrs Romance’s sibling Mary! delighted birthday, Mary.

The other two – Paul as well as Dave – were really born in the exact same healthcare facility in the UK! They’ve satisfied however one of them lives in Australia, the other lives in a absolutely different part of the country to his birthplace in England. They only satisfied for the very first time at our wedding!

Today, we’re having a huge picnic celebration for Mary. exactly how lovely is it here? This is Bobbin Head park in Sydney’s north on the Hawksbury River. It rained a bit earlier however it’s cleared up well – as well as the rainbow the weather’s left is a genuine treat!

One of the very best parts of Mary’s birthday: the doughnuts! three significant boxes of these poor boys.

This week’s travel recap

Each week we go back in time over a few of our much-loved travel destinations utilizing never-before-seen pictures of our travels. Here’s where we’ve been looking back on this week.

If there’s one thing both Mrs romance as well as I do love, it’s a great gin martini. as well as what a method to surface up a weekend. Or begin one!

Love the styling at the Balcony Bar as well as Oyster Co in Byron Bay. as well as this indication they’ve got on the wall states it all!

The shores along the southern coastline of Cuba is so beautiful. however then that’s what you’d expect from the Caribbean, right? This is somewhere between the Bay of Pigs as well as Trinidad, as well as just back from this rocky shore is a cenote. A natural sinkhole in the rock full of fresh or brackish water. just ideal for a dip.

For a lot more about our time in the wonderful country, inspect out a lot more of our articles on Cuba here.

The Bacara resort in Santa Barbara, California is absolutely stunning. It’s a much-loved location to stay for a few of the world’s greatest names (we’re speaking Oprah as well as Michael Johnson level), so if it’s great sufficient for them…

Here’s our full evaluation of our time staying right here on the last days of our road trip down the west coastline of the US.

It’s difficult to put into words what it’s like to find that you’ve got your own personal pool that overlooks the ocean! Our rental property in the Aleenta Hua Hin resort in Thailand was precisely what we needed after a stressful few days in Bangkok. Yes, this is about as extravagant as you can get, however this resort is likewise beautifully eco-minded.

Check out exactly how the Aleenta has nailed the idea of eco-luxe right here in our review.

One thing I do like is a huge comfy hotel bed. particularly if they have either great deals of pillows or one truly firm one. That feeling of sinking into freshly laundered as well as somewhat starched hotel sheets as well as understanding that tomorrow night you’ll have a fresh set to do everything once again is just the best!

Our time in Cuba was so unforgettable. We’ve both wished to come right here for so long, the danger of it being an anticlimax was exceptionally high. However, this country – the greatest island in the Caribbean – truly delivered. cut off from the rest of the world so totally for so long, the culture of Cuba is beautifully preserved.

We were right here the week before whatever altered as well as Obama’s USA started warming up the connection with the Castro brothers. I don’t believe things will modification beyond recognition that quickly, however we’re both so pleased we got there before everything started.

For a lot more information on what we did, where we went, what it was like as well as exactly how you can do it too, inspect out our protection of this mysterious, lovely country.

We hope you’ve took pleasure in this week’s IG edition as well as that this week’s a great one for you. See you once again soon!

3 CELLAR DOORS YOU should visit IN MUDGEE, NSW

With so numerous great wineries in such a small area, it’s hardly unexpected the people of Mudgee are so pleased and friendly. For a visitor, the only problem is which wineries to visit first. For a must-see cheat sheet, here are our top 3 cellar doors you should visit.

Mudgee is about a 3 ½-hour drive north-west from Sydney over the blue Mountains. best in the rural regions of eastern Australia, this little town has drawn the focus of us city slickers – and for good reason.

With the ever-growing popularity of ‘the food scene’, Mudgee has some fantastic edible options on offer. By lucky chance (or skilled choice) the settlers of the region set up shop in a place where everything seems to just grow!

As you drive through the area, you’re just surrounded by amazing views of distant green hills and close-to vineyards. The sight of the row upon row of grape vines strung out across the acreage had us keen to try a drop of local vino before we’d even got to our digs – check out the Mudgee Homestead Guesthouse for the best place to stay and the most comfortable bed I’ve ever slept in!

With over 50 wineries in the Mudgee area to choose from, it’s a hard task to either a) get through them all – a noble yet probably quite harmful quest or b) choose a few absolute winners to go to.

Well, here are our top three winery recommendations, sanctioned by quite a few of the locals we spoke to:

Skimstone

Probably the smallest cellar door we’ve ever been to, Skimstone’s ‘tasting shack’ is also certainly the most adorable. At the end of a dusty road, the shack over-looks the Cudgegong Valley, a river and the rolling lines of grape vines.

The shack itself is too small to hold much more than about 6 people. That’s ok though because the men who run the winery choose to go out onto the little patio to show their wines.

They have a great little range of wines. They even have a drinkable chardonnay that’s clean, crisp and very unlike a chardonnay. but their sangiovese is a top drop and worth buying.

Moothi Estate

Owned and manned by the Moore family, this has to be one of the friendliest cellar doors we’ve been to. It’s situated on a hill over-looking the vineyard and surrounding valleys, so the views from the veranda are amazing.

We only stopped by to try their wine, but you can also get a bite to eat at Moothi as well. They do cheese boards, ploughman’s, and some great sounding Moothi red wine pies during winter season as well.

As for their wine, once again not a huge selection, but the red wine they do make here is really good. Their Rocky Waterhole road Shiraz is great and their rosé’s pretty good as well.

Lowe Wines

This winery has really been developed with visitors in mind. You drive up to the cellar door through the fields of grape vines. The owner, David Lowe, has worked hard to make this certified organic winery much more than just a place to come and try some wine.

Obviously the focus is around wine, but food also features very strongly here. The entrance to the cellar door feels much more like a pub beer garden than a winery, with lots of people sitting outside, relaxing, trying red wine and eating.

This cellar door very much reminded me of some of the places we went in Sonoma in California. and I expect that’s suitable as one of Lowe’s main grape varieties is Zinfadel, popular on the west coast of the States.

Top Lunch Spot

I ought to also point out that if you drive a bit even more round from the Lowe cellar door, you’ll find the Zin House. This is a restaurant run by owner/chef Kim Currie, and it’s one of the most ideal settings for lunch we’ve found. They grow as numerous ingredients on site as they can, and the Zin house veggie patch out the front is an fantastic resource for their dishes.

The lunch itself is a 6-course degustation meal, and you can add a matching red wine flight with each dish as well. As you’d expect, the wines are all from Lowe. It’s a pretty distinct place to have a meal like this amidst the very vines where the red wine you’re drinking come from.

Pro tip

Gilbert Wines is on our list for the next time we’re in Mudgee. This looks like a beautiful family-run winery set in the beautiful Mudgee countryside. thanks to Ross Maher from Twenty five Doors for the tip.

Twenty five Doors is a brainwave of a red wine membership programme that guides you round red wine regions so you don’t miss the best bits, which are typically hidden from view. check it out here.

Mudgee is a great spot with so much happening in the food and drink scene all the time. here are some other things you can do in Mudgee – our post on 5 reasons why you need to visit Mudgee best now.

And if you haven’t been to numerous cellar doors before – or you’re an old hand but fancy checking to see if you’re doing it best – here are our top 15 suggestions for red wine tasting at the cellar door.

Do you have a preferred cellar door? What do you look for whenchoosing a winery to visit? tell us in the comments!

PAPER DAISY AT HALCYON home – THOSE golden DAYS ARE BACK TO stay

Food, inspiration, art as well as style – all to the backdrop of the roaring ocean; that’s what to expect at Halcyon House’s restaurant Paper Daisy, just timid of the QLD border on Australia’s east coast.

Halcyon home was when little more than a shoddy surfers’ motel on the doorstep of Cabarita beach 20 minutes south of the Queensland border. only 4 beaches short of Coolangatta as well as the Gold Coast, this was the ideal area to hole up as well as wait on the swell.

Now, however, because 2015, this beautifully transformed shop hotel has something totally different to offer.

As we pulled as much as its bit cars and truck park, we were promptly taken back to the immaculate Parker hotel in palm Springs, California, with its now-famous lobby wall.

On the beach side (apart from the beach itself of course) shades of palm Springs are right here too, this time around the Ace Motel with the styling of the pool as well as balconies. A mix of cool yet advanced – a truly difficult line to pull off – is the name of the game here.

That feeling of simple ’50s beachside motels, California days, Florida Keys… it’s all here, beautifully brought back to its former glory as well as beyond. definitely the halcyon days of this hotel.

Owners (and sisters) Siobhan as well as Elisha Bickle have done a exceptional task preserving the traditional ‘50s aesthetic of the location without any type of of the chintz. as well as at the exact same time keeping your rate of interest the whole time you’re here. Halcyon home is one of those locations where the much more you look, the much more you see.

To cement this concept, the two women have made each of the 21 spaces right here different, so each time you stay at Halcyon House, you never understand what to expect.

Paper Daisy Restaurant

Part of the hotel – as well as still extremely much in keeping with the beachside palm Springs style – is the award-winning restaurant Paper Daisy.

The intent right here is best according to the hotel: to stand apart from the crowd. as well as from the moment you walk in, you can tell it’s working.

The restaurant is adjacent to the pool as well as bar – a big space with walls covered in fascinating pictures, shelves cleverly embellished with objects as well eclectic to be accidental.

Perfect colour themes, stylish yet quirky illumination as well as fine-tuned touches of flare that sit beautifully with the restaurant’s proximity to the beach… it’s a superbly developed space.

And lots of pineapples of course!

As for the approachable menu, you understand you’re in for some surprises even as you struggle to select from the generous variety of tasty sounding dishes.

For lunch, you can select between 2 to 3 programs as well as all mains include sides. You likewise get an amuse bouche (though see our notes at the bottom on this) as well as a choice of fantastic bread with unusual kefir butter, as well as macadamia as well as wattle seed spread.

To start

For entrée, Mrs romance had the prawns, which were delicious. served in a crisp rice crumb as well as wonderful chilli sauce similar to the stuff you get with Vietnamese summertime rolls. The rest of the meal was a bit underwhelming though.

I purchased the coal-baked fish (we believe it was coral snapper, however the waitress was in a bit of a hurry to leave – see our notes below). The fish was beautiful. The coal flavour added amazing depth to the meat.

Unfortunately, just like Mrs Romance’s prawns, the rest of the meal was disappointing. The parsley puree was okay however not astonishing as well as the pomelo that came with it was ok. The fish likewise appeared like it’d been dropped on the method to the plate as part of it was damaged as well as mushed up. I still ate it though!

Mains

Mrs Romance’s paperbark fish (again, we weren’t told what fish it was) was beautifully presented. The meat was tender as well as the shallots on top were crisp as well as delicious.

My poached poultry was so soft as well as tender. I have no concept exactly how the kitchen area did it. The sunflower seed mash/butter was good, as were the chunky shitake mushrooms as well as crispy grilled artichoke hearts.

Although the flavours were there, the old adage of eating with your eyes left me wanting a bit more. The meal was a bit 50 shades of Beige.

The sides we selected – the radicchio, orange as well as caramelised walnut – did have all the colour though, sadly it was a bit as well wonderful for me.

However, the peas with cashew butter was an outstanding dish.

Dessert

We were trying to choose on what to have from the somewhat unremarkable dessert menu when Mrs romance found an ice cream go by. It was a lemon meringue ice cream from the pool bar menu as well as much much better than anything on the restaurant menu.

Our wait personnel were much more than pleased to serve this instead, which I truly appreciated. different menus can cause a lack of versatility in some places, however not here. The only silly thing was they provided us significant dessert spoons as well huge for the ice cream cone. Sundae spoons, little bar spoons or even teaspoons would have been better.

Over all, the meal was extremely tasty, as well as the location, the design as well as the design of the location is all sufficient to make any type of special meal all the much more special.

A couple of side notes

I should state though, there were some issues. The amuse bouche at the begin of the meal was extremely unusual as well as a bit pointless. An entire raw radish with a (forgivably tasty) oyster emulsion is surprisingly difficult to eat – even with a knife as well as fork. The kitchen area hadn’t even eliminated the roots.

Perhaps we were missing something – however it was a bad begin to a excellent meal.

The other thing we missed was service. The space didn’t seem especially full the day we were there, however it took a ridiculously long time to get anyone’s attention.

I don’t typically comment on service as it’s so situational, so time sensitive as well as a extremely subjective creature, however our waitress on the day was clearly either off her game or totally under-trained.

This all said, I don’t want you to believe this location is no good. It truly is. There’s a great deal of hype around Halcyon home as well as Paper Daisy – many of which I believe is extremely much deserved. We can only comment on our own experience, many of which was incredibly positive.

Halcyon home as well as Paper Daisy are definitely locations you come for special occasions. as well as I do believe that coming right here for your special day will make everything the much more memorable.

The styling, place as well as general atmosphere of Halcyon home is a delight. You feel like you’re on a film set – somewhere between mad Men, a Bond film as well as possibly a biopic of Frank Sinatra.

HOW TO MAKE the most OUT OF SCONE equine FESTIVAL, NSW

Every year, in early May, the bit town of Scone in new South Wales lights up. As the equine funding of Australia, the Scone equine celebration is one of the very best times of year to find as well as find exactly how things are performed in the country.

We like visiting rural areas of Australia. discovering that lost connection between the city as well as the countryside is fascinating. Mrs romance as well as I just recently visited the bit gem of a country town called Scone, about 3 ½ hours north of Sydney.

We’ve discovered that – under that quiet, sometimes stoic exterior, these bit Aussie towns have a huge heart that beats difficult as well as quick – you just have to discover out what increases the pulse.

With Scone (pronounced so it rhymes with ‘stone’ by the way; never “sconn”), it’s all about the horses. Yes, the money from close-by mining jobs have stimulated the town, however it’s the equine breeders – the stud – that truly makes this location tick.

So when we heard that the biggest equine town in the country – in truth the second biggest equine stud town in the world – was having its annual equine festival, we couldn’t wait to inspect it out.

The celebration runs over 15 days in early may each year, however we were only right here for the weekend. Still, we were soon to find that even such a short time will provide you a excellent taste of what Scone’s all about.

Scone equine Festival

What did we see as well as do?

The ball

There’s plenty to do over the Scone equine Festival. The celebration sphere (a.k.a. the Australian stock equine society equine celebration Ball) marks the begin of the celebration appropriate as well as is worth a look. You requirement to book tickets to this one.

The equine Parade

A genuine show of the neighborhood spirit, the parade includes everybody from the town’s polo team as well as the mounted armed forces as well as authorities to schools, neighborhood groups as well as even auto clubs.

The procession takes over the entire primary street as well as actually stops traffic. There are MCs such as this fella on the roof of the royal hotel announcing participants as they go by – we truly enjoyed this part of the festival.

Farrier Competition

Think incredibly tough guy working with white-hot braziers as well as hammering white-hot metal into horseshoes. There’s a innovative aspect to the competition in addition to ‘hot-shoeing’ horses. It’s incredible to see watch this much overlooked craft in action.

Tentpegging

A little-known aspect of horsemanship, tentpegging goes back to when mounted armed forces efforts would descend on an opponent encampment as well as wreak havoc by cutting down tents. These days, riders spear pegs stuck in the ground as they trip past. The competitors make it look simple however I get the feeling it’s not.

Rodeo

The crowd-pleaser, the rodeo is a variety of different skills on horseback. Rope as well as tie, bronc riding, bullriding… it’s a great deal of fun as well as some impressive skills are on screen here.

Polo

One of Australia’s oldest, Scone Polo Club is an organization – figuratively as well as literally! They now likewise have the very first ever all-woman polo competition here.

Watching the polo is a quite low-key design as well as about as country as you can get. Of course, there’s a licensed bar as well as food available, however the clubhouse is quite open plan as well as rustic!

Pig racing

Obviously not directly part of the equestrian festivities however a bettable race nonetheless. tucked away in the courtyard of the royal hotel on the corner of Kelly St as well as St Aubins St – easily across the road from our hotel actually!

Watch the racing piglets hurtle round a track to get to the bowl of food in the middle. It’s so funny – particularly when they noise the bugle contact us to begin the race, the piggies all understand what’s going on as well as get extremely excited as well as swarm the begin line!

Where did we eat?

There are rather a few choices for food in Scone, which is a pleasant surprise for its size. There’s the ubiquitous Chinese restaurant of course, as well as there are sufficient pubs as well as the RSL to keep you fat as well as fed.

But if you’re looking for a truly excellent feed, The Cottage is the only location you requirement to understand about.

This beautifully renovated old guesthouse is now an epicentre for superbly cooked steak. The hanging space for the meat means the beef is all dry-aged to perfection as well as the wine list, service as well as ambience matches. We’ve got more to state about this place, however suffice to state if you come to Scone as well as don’t eat here, you’re truly missing out.

Where did we stay?

The celebration is a extremely prominent time of year, so discovering lodging can be tricky. We stayed at INN Scone, a shop hotel with three one-bed apartments as wellas a cottage that sleeps 4 right in the heart of Scone.

The apartment we had was perfect of what we needed. A completely equipped kitchenette, a great size bathroom, a cosy courtyard, the all-important free wifi as well as the comfiest bed imaginable.

The place of this location truly made it a win too; seconds from the primary street as well as a quick 10-minute walk to White Park where all the rodeo fun happens.

Scone is one of those locations carefully dotted around the Australian countryside that, up until you spend a bit of time here, you might just drive with in under a minute as well as believe nothing more of it.

But if you do, you’re missing out on a whole spectrum of experiences as well as memories that’ll stay with you for a long time.

Have you ever been to Scone? have you ever heard of tentpegging?! have you ever been to a rodeo? tell us about it in the comments!

ON PUBLIC SPEAKING, travel PLANS, FOOD, FOOD as well as more FOOD

I honestly can’t believe it’s the end of may already. even the weather condition only now seems to be coming to terms with it – this week’s been chilly in Sydney. buddies back house would laugh, shrug off their tee shirts as well as be radiant red in 5 minutes, however to my thinned out blood, 13°C is cold!

Thankfully there’s been plenty going on over the past week to keep our minds off the turn in great weather. let the listing begin!

Mrs R had a speaking gig at a blog writer meet-up.

We went to the awards evening for this year’s Rising Social star (congratulations to all the winners by the way).

Tickets for the next bit blog huge workshop went on sale – Mrs romance is extremely excited. get your ticket here.

Our buddy Kate from trick Bloggers’ business was in town.

Vivid Sydney 2016 started – if you want our top tips of what to do, click here.

We’ve got our last bits of travel planning done for our trip to Thailand tomorrow (gulp!).

And – as part of vivid – I had my very first speaking gig.

Like I said, it’s been a distracting week.

Plus it was worldwide Burger Day over the weekend. extremely important to include that!

So here’s our latest Instagram Diary as well as travel recap. hope you enjoy!

We’ve been looking ahead to trying out Loch Brewery as well as Distillery’s new gin – The Weaver – ever since our bottle arrived, as well as bloody hell was it worth waiting for. This stuff, which is distilled by husband-and-wife team Craig as well as Mel Davies in Loch, Victoria, is 50% however goes down like water. It’s so smooth.

It’s likewise packed with flavour as well as texture. If you’re going to check out a new Aussie gin this winter, you’ve got to get your hands on a bottle of this. It’s absolutely superb. inspect out Loch’s website or buy from their lovely distributor, Nip of Courage.

So today’s my huge day. I’m speaking in front of about 120 people – about being an influencer. In the past I believed the only thing I might influence was one more round at the pub, however it seems I have more to offer after all!

This panel-based talk, held by the lovely Lorraine Murphy of The Remarkables group fame, is all about what it means to take your on the internet influence to the next level.

And right here we go!

In event of not making a total tit out of myself – as well as the truth that it’s worldwide Burger Day tomorrow – Mrs romance has taken me out for a pub lunch. What a lovely lady. Her slow-roasted suckling pig burger looks amazing, doesn’t it? That’s my blurry pie in the background.

In light of it being worldwide Burger Day, by the way, we’ve shared our trick burger recipe on the blog. inspect it out.

Amidst cries for a much better look at my pie, here’s a more in-focus shot of it. It’s a slow-cooked lamb shoulder as well as rosemary pie. absolutely spectacular. This is at the welcome hotel in Rozelle. get round there for excellent Aussie beer on tap as well as a pub grub menu to drool for!

This evening we’re getting a bit of method in. My mate Julian has taken us to Hawker – one of the more authentic Malaysian diners in Sydney. Jules as well as his sibling both like it here, as well as as we’re heading for their manor – the mean streets of Kuala Lumpur – tomorrow, we believed we’d much better get to understand more than just laksa.

If you’re into your Malaysian food, you should most likely inspect this location out. Hawker’s got some incredible things to chow down on! It’s had by the exact same guys who opened Mamak, so it’s bound to be popular.

So much travel coming up. Our work trip to Malaysia as well as Thailand is – of program – our concern at the moment. We are flying tomorrow after all! however we’ve likewise got a trip to the specifies in the pipeline as well as Mrs romance has just started sales for our next bit blog huge workshop. This one’s going to be in Perth!

Check out what’s going on in this – our latest session – as well as get your ticket quick. They’re already selling!

This week’s travel recap

Each week we go back in time over a few of our favourite travel destinations utilizing never-before-seen pictures of our travels. Here’s where we’ve been looking back on this week.

It’s sometimes the cheesiest pictures you end up loving the most. I believe the stating is: “when in Pisa, do as the tourists do.” I believe I got that right.

What I didn’t get right – not for ages – was this shot. You notice exactly how there’s nobody truly near us? That’s since of the domestic we were having! great times!

Mrs romance likes a sunrise photo. as well as from this shot I can see what she’s getting at. Still, my bed is so much more comfortable when I’m in it. particularly when the sun’s still not up. If the sun gets a lie in, why shouldn’t I?

This was in the cook Islands – definitely one of the most gorgeous locations we’ve ever been as well as would like to go back again.

This was one of those travelmoments that has stuck with us – as well as most likely will stay there – forever. Our go to to Capri on our last-but-one day in Italy was so incredible Mrs romance was still stating we should have stayed there even after we’d landed back in Australia… in truth she still states it now!

If you want to discover out what all the longing’s about, inspect out our publish on Capri here.

This is Blue hole 2 on Tanna Island, Vanuatu. After a 100-metre scramble over rocks as well as dead coral, this enormous football field sized hole in the reef opens down into the depths. absolutely incredible. as well as right in front of our hotel.

Tanna Island is full of surprises. See what else we discovered on this wild bit volcanic island.

The sand at Whitehaven beach on the Whitsunday Islands is just ridiculous. even in the middle of summer, the high silica material of the sand means it’s still awesome on your feet. This is excellent news as you want to spend as long as possible just staring around at the incredible beauty of this place.

Burano, a bit island town northeast of the primary city of Venice, has to be the most colourful location in Italy. Each of the homes is painted a different colour instead of having street numbers. perhaps since of all the colour right here – as well as the truth is type of away from the primary tourist path – Burano is much friendlier as well as more fun than a great deal of Venice.

Here’s more on what Burano’s all about.

We’re always on the lookout for rooftop bars. If there’s a method to get higher up, Mrs romance will discover it as well as head directly for it! This bit diamond of a bar is in the Grand hotel de la Minerve in Rome. The views out over the city as well as Piazza Venezi make an afternoon Aperol spritz even more enjoyable.

Well, that’s all from this week’s edition of our Instagram Diary. hope you’ve enjoyed it. Our next one will have a much more tropical feel to it, I’m quite sure!

How was your week as well as weekend? Was may a great month for you? tell us in the comments!

How do you survive a pandemic when you work in hospitality? So many people have lost their businesses this year, to terrific sadness. but others have done truly innovative things and come back stronger than ever.

Recently, the Czech tourism board highlighted the stories of locals in Prague who creatively pivoted their businesses to survive during the pandemic. They found a way to survive — though they’re hoping to welcome more travelers back soon.

I watched the videos and was struck by how moving they were.

And as I watched them, I had one story I wanted to tell in particular:

The story of Petr, Gabi, and Etapa — a cafe in my neighborhood of Karlín in Prague. A cafe that not only survived the pandemic, but managed to thrive under the new normal. A story of perseverance and community. A story I hope you enjoy.

This branded content post is brought to you by Czech Tourism.

Note — the above video is in Czech. hit the CC button and English captions will show up.

A Gem in Karlín

In many European cities, travelers like to explore different neighborhoods, finding the kinds of hidden gems only locals know about. but strangely, in Prague, I find that most travelers stick to the old town, rarely venturing beyond the limits of Prague 1, the city center.

Of course, the old town is lovely — so many crenellated buildings, a castle along the river. but there is so much going on outside the old town, too. So much that I almost feel like Prague is two cities — the neighborhoods filled with tourists, and the neighborhoods that never see tourists. Karlín, one of the coolest neighborhoods in Prague, is the latter.

Karlín is where I live now and where my boyfriend Charlie has lived for the past 10 years. He loves it so much that on his travels, he’s always searching for the equivalent of Karlín: emerging, trendy, local, and cool. Poblenou in Barcelona. Prati in Rome. Roma Norte in Mexico City.

Karlín is a 20-minute walk up the river from the old town. It’s unique in that it’s edged with office buildings, but in the middle is a residential area with parks, shops, cafes, and Prague’s trademark candy-colored houses.

And one of those cafes is Etapa, owned by Karlín residents and Prague food bloggers Petr Ogurcak and Gabi Ogurcakova. Karlín was central to opening their business.

“It’s in the center but it’s not, it’s green but it’s not,” says Petr. “It’s kind of everything.”

“There are lots of expats,” adds Gabi. “And you can buy whatever you need here, you don’t need to go to the big mall.”

“We call it small Berlin,” Petr says.

SMALL BERLIN! That is PERFECT! That phrase encapsulates Karlín more succinctly than anything else I’ve heard.

Petr and Gabi outside their cafe, Etapa.
Starting a Business

How do you suddenly decide to start a small business? Some people have the entrepreneurial fire in their belly from birth, but for some people, everything falls into place at the right time.

For Petr and Gabi, a married couple in their thirties, they were wanting something more out of life.

“We didn’t just want to sit at home, working behind our computers,” Gabi tells me.

“We wanted something when we can meet people. So, the first idea –” she turns to Petr. “I think you started making bread?”

“I suppose my ambition was to make sourdough bread,” Petr says with a smile. “A chance to do it properly.”

In 2019 both Petr and Gabi worked in web-related professions — Petr as a UX designer, Gabi as a paid search marketing specialist. In their free time, they ran a food blog, PG Foodies, as a hobby.

(Fun fact: I was also a paid search marketing specialist before quitting my job to travel the world. Unlike me, Gabi didn’t quit in grand fashion; as a freelancer, she simply decreased her workload over time.)

“I’m so thankful that I left everything behind,” sighs Gabi. “At first it was creative, like eight years ago, but then…”

“It became more technical than creative,” says Petr. “We felt a little bit tired of the IT environment.”

Being successful food bloggers, they had thought about doing something more with food. and then an opportunity arrived right in the heart of Karlín.

“We live just there,” Petr says, gesturing his head down the street. “We found this place. We fell in love with it. and we didn’t know what we would do withnullnull

7 AUCKLAND BARS YOU CAN’T miss

new Zealand’s many populous city, Auckland has plenty of top watering holes to please the masses. but when you’re going to the City of Sails, knowing the best places for a pint, a red wine or a whisky is essential. here are 7 Auckland bars you shouldn’t miss.

It’s been a while because we were last in Auckland, and things have certainly changed. Of course the two beautiful harbours and striking coastline that surround the city are still as picturesque as ever, but the social scene here seems to have come a long way.

Bars, restaurants, clubs and cafés line the busy streets, and even in winter, there seems to be a feeling in the air of eagerness to have fun.

As we explore the streets, alleyways and waterfront of downtown Auckland, we can’t help but pop our heads round the doors of old favourites and test out a few bars we haven’t seen before.

7 Auckland bars you can’t miss

1. Brew on Quay

Just the other side of the road from the harbour, Brew on Quay is a busy, warm, fun bar full of nautical charm and outstanding beer.

Finding a table can be tricky, especially on a Friday or Saturday, but in a good way. The atmosphere here is lively and friendly, and worth the wait if you don’t have a seat immediately.

Food offerings at the Brew on Quay look very enticing. The burgers in particular are large and tasty looking. If only we hadn’t had so much lunch!

Brew on Quay

102 Quay Street

2. Vultures’ Lane

A fun little bar in one of the coolest spots in the city, Vultures’ Lane is best in the heart of it. In the middle of Vulcan Lane, which is packed with cafés, bars and little eateries, this bar is the wood for the trees.

Find it, score a seat outside under the heaters and delight in viewing the to-ings and fro-ings of the Auckland nightlife while you sip on one (or two) of the outstanding beers these men stock.

3. The Jefferson

Tucked about as away as you can get off the street, The Jefferson is a dark, moody and very cool little whisky bar.

Its comprehensive whisky menu above the bar is practically as full as the shelves below it. Rows upon rows of outstanding drams will confuse you to the point where you’ll just want to purchase one of each to avoid FOMO.

Instead, ask the superb bar staff for help. They’ll point you in the exact direction of your new preferred whisky. Don’t forget, NZ makes whisky too – so why not try some here. They’ve got quite a few.

4. The Brit nee northern Steamship

Once known as the Steamship – this institution on the waterfront is now The Brit. This cool new bar has shrugged off the old-world feel of its predecessor with a clean, open design.

The small nautical nod to bygone days of sailors and seadogs keeps The Brit in line with its proximity to the harbour, but this shiny new gastro-pub is much more of a modern meeting place than a shanty shack.

Kick back here over a few tinnies and view the night evolve.

The Brit Pub & Eatery

5. Shucker Brothers

Perhaps not an all-out bar, but this place serves some of the best oysters we’ve tried. A dozen finest along with a glass of sparkling and views out over the harbour and Queens Wharf, and you’re talking a prime spot for indulging.

There are outdoor seating options, but if you can score a spot at the window looking out, you’ve got the best of all worlds. The view, the warmth and the proximity to the bar to purchase more.

6. Charlie Farley’s

Ok, this isn’t in Auckland per se, but on Weiheke Island just off the coast of the city. If you’re going to Auckland, I presume you’ll want to visit this beautiful place, so here’s where to go!

Take the bus from the wharf all the way to the end and hop off at Onetangi. Light and airy, Charlie Farley’s is the ideal beachy bar with high ceilings, great views of the water, and many importantly great food and beer.

Order the double wagyu cheeseburger for a life-changing lunch!

7. The one that got away

There’s always somewhere you discover after you’ve left a place. Dr Rudi’s Rooftop Brewery is just that.

We’re always on the lookout for rooftop bars, so we’re gutted to have missed Rudi’s. Overlooking one of the marinas of the Viaduct basin and just round the corner from Princes Wharf, Dr Rudi’s promises a cool vibe, great cocktails and – as its name suggests – even its own brewery. next time.

Dr Rudi’s Rooftop Brewery

Level 2, 204 Quay St, Viaduct Harbour

We ought to also mention the wineries we missed out on when we went to Waiheke Island. It was raining so hard the day we were there the bus flooded. By that, I imply the bus started taking on water!

Next time we’re in town, hopefully we’ll able to explore the numerous vineyards and sample some of the finest wines in the country.

If you delighted in this story, you ought to check out some of our others on new Zealand:

A hotel TAKEOVER, A charming ROSÉ as well as A new BEER ON THE block

This past week has been normally unreliable right here in Sydney. As summertime comes on, the danger for whatever to either get rained out to the point of drowning or roasted to death in a unexpected heatwave are similarly possible.

Thankfully, our plans have somehow fallen completely into the spaces in the crazy weather condition gods’ schedules.

Bad weather condition wouldn’t have fit our plans this week. A top Sydney hotel holding its most current innovative collab, one of the most progressive wineries introducing this year’s charming rosé as well as our much-loved regional pub bringing in a new beer. No space for storms, thanks.

But here’s what ended up happening.

We hope you take pleasure in this regular Edition.

Cheers – Jim & Christina xx

How remarkable is this bed? Christina as well as I are costs to night right here at the West hotel Sydney to inspect out their most current ‘Meet The Creatives’ collaboration.

The darling Harbour-based hotel has provided the crucial to one of its spaces to innovative designers Bonnie as well as Neil, who have produced this idea of ‘Sleeping amongst Botanics’.

You can checked out our full evaluation for the cost of this limited-time bundle here.

The lovely flower designs streaming out above the bed are by event floral designers The Hunted Yard, as well as there are great deals of other remarkable bit touches that turn this guideline hotel space into something rather special.

Everything down to the photos on the wall, the materials on the bed, as well as the pots as well as ornaments on the tables have been very carefully curated for this room. It even has its own summer time scent from Air Aroma.

As you can see, I’m quite ecstatic to be costs the night here! In a method it’s a possibility for us to go camping (not one of Christina’s much-loved pastimes) without leaving the sanctuary of a solid building. Or running the risk of get in touch with with wild nocturnal animals.

I’m shocked Christina doesn’t take pleasure in handing out with regional untamed nightlife a lot more to be honest. I mean, we lived happily in Surry Hills for over a decade!

The ‘Sleep amongst Botanics’ bundle with West hotel Sydney doesn’t just include the room. They’ve likewise dealt with regional distillery Archie increased to bring a great choice of bar snacks as well as mixed drinks you get as part of your stay.

The gin-marinated grilled prawns as well as the gin-infused salmon tartare are amazing, as well as the two mixed drinks we tried featuring Archie Rose’s gin are excellent too.

The West hotel Sydney is in truth part of the Hilton group – one of it’s Curio Collection. So the breakfast after our night under the flowery canopy is on point. I do like a hotel breakfast. There’s something about it.

I’ve timed it just ideal as well as enjoyed the chef draw out a lot more bacon while I was waiting on my toast. like it when a plan comes together!

We’d like to introduce you to the current member of our team: this is Pepper – or Peperomia on her driving licence.

We just recently invested in a whole tons of plants to try as well as eco-friendly up the office. It’s great to have pants around, the only difficulty is they don’t tend to last that long with us. since we travel rather a lot, they can often be a bit neglected.

But I’ve got a great feeling about this most current lot.

Tonight, we’ve made a decision to pop into town for dinner at El Loco at the slip Inn – just round the corner from the West hotel in fact.

We don’t commonly come right here as things can be a bit hit as well as miss. the very best thing is there are commonly excellent food as well as drinks offers going on here. We’ve stumbled upon the $15 burger night as well as we’re likewise in time for delighted hour on the drinks!

Christina’s poultry burger is off the charts. The poultry is exceptionally crispy as well as tasty, as well as the jalapeños provide it a great heat.

Highly suggested by the bar staff, my bacon cheese burger is amazing. always take food tip-offs from the bar staff.

I’m just so pleased these burgers are only $15 each. as well as any type of white wine or beer for 2 hours is $6 as well (or $7 for a pint). Can’t go wrong – I’m rather shocked why it’s not busier tonight to be honest.

And then the rain begins.

What an extraordinary storm. It woke me up at around 5.30am with thunder as well as torrential rain. When the sun lastly gets bright sufficient to radiate with the clouds as well as rain – at about 6am – this is all we can see.

Sydney gets over a month’s worth of rain in about 3 hours. as well as it just doesn’t stop. It’s rather amazing, however unfortunately the rain doesn’t go far west or south sufficient to assist the drought-affected areas that requirement it.

With the rain storm over, we’re out tonight to see the introduce of the current vintage of rosé white wine from Handpicked – a winery with a genuine difference.

And tonight is all about the rosé.

This is a partnership between Handpicked as well as Aussie fashion label romance Was Born. It’s the second time these people have worked together; as well as with last year’s vintage selling out, the 2018/19 rosé is set to be a winner.

The Handpicked Wines cellar door, which is ideal in the city, has blacklights going tonight. That’s since they’ve done something quite daring with the labels.

They’re glow-in-the-dark pink!

The rosé itself is excellent. best easy-drinking for the coming summertime – light, dry, however full of flavour. as well as the labels, which is where the romance Was born collab comes in, are just stunning.

To entertain us while we take pleasure in the rosé tonight, Handpicked have something to opt for their studio 54 theme: retro-rollerskaters!

These people are remarkable as well as are ruling the dance floor with enviable moves. I’d requirement a great deal a lot more area as well as much less glass around to try a few of these! At one point, they even trundle around the cellar door using oysters to the guests.

Just as excellent as the rollerskaters is the cheese as well as charcuterie table. Not only do Handpicked offer tastings of their wines at their Haymarket cellar door, they likewise have an extraordinary cheese menu you can take pleasure in while you’re there.

Here’s a lot more on the Handpicked cellar door.

Handpicked is a truly fascinating winery. They have a number of vineyards all around Australia, as well as grow their own grapes in lots of of the other finest white wine regions around the world. Handpicked’s vision goes that – although a lot of white wine regions can grow a lot of grape varieties well sufficient – different white wine types are much better from certain regions.

For that reason, Handpicked grow the grapes finest fit to certain styles in countries as well as the regions where they make the very best style of that wine.

Inspired by last night’s remarkable rosé party, we’re bringing out one of our other much-loved pinks: huge guy In tights Rosé from Bloodwood Wines in Orange, NSW.

Orange has some extraordinary wines on the market (though this one’s especially difficult to get hold of) as well as their food as well as white wine celebrations are not to be missed.

While we wait on the next one, we’re enjoying a glass of the great stuff while we tap away at work today!

Tonight is an interesting night for our regional pub: the east village hotel in Balmain. It’s a tap takeover with an Australian first: Boneface Brewing from Wellington, new Zealand have brought their craft (beer) across the Tasman.

Their beers are as special as their story, however all are exceptionally drinkable.

From delegated right, the beers are:

– The Juice – a sharp, citrusy beer Christina’s now totally in like with
– Hoptron IPA – it’s a bit unbalanced however still exceptional – full of hops however a bit grain-heavy
– war maker Rye pale Ale – most likely my favourite. Sharp, hoppy, lovely texture
– The system NZ IPA – a large beer at 6% however dangerously drinkable. Grapefruit as well as flavor for the win
– The huge system double NZ IPA – not to be trifled with at a huge 8.6%, this exceptionally smooth high-percentage IPA is packed with flavour as well as richness

I hope these beers are right here to stay – particularly if they ended up being a routine function at the east Village, which already has a great beer line-up.

It definitely makes me want to get over to NZ as well as drink a lot more of their beers. Marvellous.

We hope you’ve took pleasure in this regular Edition. It’s been a great deal of fun to make, that’s for sure!

Cheers – Jim & Christina xx
