Having spent 3 months in Argentina in 2017, and the fact that we’ve been here for a month so far in December 2021/January 2022, it’s safe to say that we know a few things about this incredible (and large) South American destination.

Whether you’re into culture and history, nature and landscapes, lakes and fishing, or cities and wine, Argentina has something for you. 

Since Argentina is such a vast country, with a wide variety of landscapes and regions, it can be visited year round. But, it’s one of the best places to travel in January if you’re looking to do some hiking and fly fishing.

In fact, it’s one of the best countries to visit in January no matter what type of trip you’re planning.

The northwestern region (around Salta) might be a bit wet during this time, but the rest of the country is dry and warm. 

Argentina is known for being one of the top fly fishing destinations in the world. If you’re an angler, you’ll be happy to know that fly fishing season in the Lake district of Patagonia is best in January and February due to the warm weather, and ability to fish all waters during this time. 

There are some stunning lakeside and riverside lodges you can stay in. Don’t miss the famous Correntoso Lake and River Hotel, beautiful Faraway Hosteria and Rio Hermoso boutique Hotel. 

For trekkers, January is a good time to lace up your boots and hit the mountains of Patagonia.

Don’t miss nearby El Calafate and its popular Perito Moreno Glacier, which calves massive chunks of ice every few minutes!

Although January is high season at Perito Moreno Glacier, you can avoid the crowds by visiting before 9:30am or after 5:00pm — take the later shuttle bus, or rent a car to explore at your own pace. 

El Chalten is a great place to hike in Argentina

While you’ll miss the grape harvesting in Mendoza (it happens in February), January is still a great time to visit because the vineyards are green and the grapes are everywhere.

Be prepared for hot temperatures (30°C / 80°F+), fantastic wines, great hiking around Parque Provincial Aconcagua (2 hours from Mendoza), picturesque parks and plazas, and some awesome restaurants. There are many things to do in Mendoza to keep you busy.

When we first travelled to Argentina in 2017, we received around 18 Pesos for 1 us Dollar. In January 2021, the rate was 85 Pesos for 1 us Dollar. 

Right now, in January 2022, the Argentine Peso has taken a huge dip and the economy is struggling.

The official exchange rate is: $1 USD = 102.69 Pesos

In our on-the-ground experience, being here now, the entire country is approximately 75% cheaper than it was when we first visited in 2017.

Of course, restaurants and accommodations have adjusted their rates, but it’s still incredibly economical and of excellent value right now.

Argentina isn’t known for being one of the cheapest countries to visit, but with the current instability of the peso, you can definitely save some money by visiting now and help out the local economy along the way.

The department of health (DOH) and the Bureau of Quarantine (BOQ) have recently launched VaxCertPH, a site where you can get a digital vaccine certificate. This online portal would provide a more standard vaccine certificate that people can use when they travel.

Note that only fully-vaccinated individuals are eligible to get a vaccine certificate from the portal. You can sign up on the portal 48 hours after you get your second dose, but the certificate’s validity will start 14 days after.

NOTE: This vaccine certificate is different from the international certification of Vaccination (ICV) also known as the YELLOW book or YELLOW CARD. Update: VaxCertPH now includes booster information. If you already have a VaxCertPH, you may have to generate a new one to get an updated version. However, over the past few days, the site is undergoing system upgrade so you might encounter downtimes.

Note: If your vaccine brand is Johnson & Johnson, tick off the box located on the upper portion of the form.

6. review the details you entered.

If everything is correct, click CONTINUE.

Then, enter the captcha code to proceed.

7. review your vaccination record.

The details include your full name, birth date, vaccine brand, and the dates when you received each dose.

If all the details are correct, click the generate VACCINATION CERTIFICATE button.

8. download your vaccination certificate.

A copy of your vaccination certificate will appear on the screen. The certificate will indicate your personal and vaccination details and a QR code that can be used to validate your digital vaccination certificate.

You can download, print, or simply take a screenshot of the certificate.

Note: If you intend to use this certificate for travel purposes, don’t forget to enter your passport number and tick the box below it (see image below).

I get a “NO VACCINATION information FOUND” error. What should I do?

First, check if all the details you offered are correct. hit the try again button and fill out the form again, this time double checking that all the information is right.

If you’re sure that everything is correct but the system still tells you that NO VACCINATION information FOUND, it’s either your data were not recorded correctly or your file has not been uploaded to the system yet. In this case, click the continue button.

On the next page, you’ll be asked to submit a copy of your vaccination card and a valid ID, and enter your email address and mobile number. then tap submit REQUEST.

There’s a mistake on my VaxCertPH. how do I change/edit/correct the wrong information?

You may update your details. On the vaccine certificate page, you’ll find two buttons below. Click update record to submit a request to change it.

On the next page, you’ll be presented with a form. only input the details that you wish to change. then on the next page, submit a copy of a valid ID and your vaccination card. Next, enter your email address and contact number.

If the submit request button at the end of the form is unclickable, click BACK and try to input your birthdate on the previous page. It seems to be a required field. My teammate had a similar problem and he simply entered his birthdate and he was able to submit the form.

After submission, you’ll be given a reference code. Take note or a screenshot of it because you might need it in the future when asking for updates.

Processing of update requests can take as long as five (5) days. To check if it has been corrected, simply come back to the website’s home page and look for the ‘TRACK request STATUS’ button. provide your reference ID and your first name.

Bangkok to Siem Reap by direct Bus

You have two bus options. You can travel by bus to Aranyaprathet, the town on the border, then switch to another bus once you’re through with the immigration processes. but you can book a direct bus.

Although you will still need to get off and go through the immigration counters on your own, you don’t need to bring your luggage with you. Here’s the whole process:

Go to the bus terminal and board your bus.

Get off at the border. You will be given a badge which you shouldn’t lose because you’ll need it to board the bus on the other side.

Go through the immigration processes as rapidly as you can. Yes, the bus will wait for you, but be mindful of other people’s time too. You’ll enter the Thai immigration building first, go through Immigration, emerge on the other side, walk to the Cambodian side, go through their process this time.

Find your bus on the other side. Hop in and you’ll be on your way to Siem Reap’s city center.

If you have questions or need help, do not hesitate to ask the driver. They’re trained to assist you.

IMPORTANT! You’ll find AN terrible lot of advertisements for direct buses, but many of them are NOT really direct. They still switch buses after the border. I even experienced booking a supposedly direct bus but then at the border, we transferred to a much smaller minibus (van). some of these scammers will squeeze money out of you.
