Skimstone

Moothi Estate

Owned and manned by the Moore family, this has to be one of the friendliest cellar doors we’ve been to. It’s situated on a hill over-looking the vineyard and surrounding valleys, so the views from the veranda are amazing.

We only stopped by to try their wine, but you can also get a bite to eat at Moothi as well. They do cheese boards, ploughman’s, and some great sounding Moothi red wine pies during winter season as well.

As for their wine, once again not a huge selection, but the red wine they do make here is really good. Their Rocky Waterhole road Shiraz is great and their rosé’s pretty good as well.

Lowe Wines

This winery has really been developed with visitors in mind. You drive up to the cellar door through the fields of grape vines. The owner, David Lowe, has worked hard to make this certified organic winery much more than just a place to come and try some wine.

Obviously the focus is around wine, but food also features very strongly here. The entrance to the cellar door feels much more like a pub beer garden than a winery, with lots of people sitting outside, relaxing, trying red wine and eating.

This cellar door very much reminded me of some of the places we went in Sonoma in California. and I expect that’s suitable as one of Lowe’s main grape varieties is Zinfadel, popular on the west coast of the States.

Top Lunch Spot

How do you survive a pandemic when you work in hospitality? So many people have lost their businesses this year, to terrific sadness. but others have done truly innovative things and come back stronger than ever.

Recently, the Czech tourism board highlighted the stories of locals in Prague who creatively pivoted their businesses to survive during the pandemic. They found a way to survive — though they’re hoping to welcome more travelers back soon.

I watched the videos and was struck by how moving they were.

And as I watched them, I had one story I wanted to tell in particular:

The story of Petr, Gabi, and Etapa — a cafe in my neighborhood of Karlín in Prague. A cafe that not only survived the pandemic, but managed to thrive under the new normal. A story of perseverance and community. A story I hope you enjoy.

A Gem in Karlín

In many European cities, travelers like to explore different neighborhoods, finding the kinds of hidden gems only locals know about. but strangely, in Prague, I find that most travelers stick to the old town, rarely venturing beyond the limits of Prague 1, the city center.

Of course, the old town is lovely — so many crenellated buildings, a castle along the river. but there is so much going on outside the old town, too. So much that I almost feel like Prague is two cities — the neighborhoods filled with tourists, and the neighborhoods that never see tourists. Karlín, one of the coolest neighborhoods in Prague, is the latter.

Karlín is where I live now and where my boyfriend Charlie has lived for the past 10 years. He loves it so much that on his travels, he’s always searching for the equivalent of Karlín: emerging, trendy, local, and cool. Poblenou in Barcelona. Prati in Rome. Roma Norte in Mexico City.

Karlín is a 20-minute walk up the river from the old town. It’s unique in that it’s edged with office buildings, but in the middle is a residential area with parks, shops, cafes, and Prague’s trademark candy-colored houses.

And one of those cafes is Etapa, owned by Karlín residents and Prague food bloggers Petr Ogurcak and Gabi Ogurcakova. Karlín was central to opening their business.

“It’s in the center but it’s not, it’s green but it’s not,” says Petr. “It’s kind of everything.”

“There are lots of expats,” adds Gabi. “And you can buy whatever you need here, you don’t need to go to the big mall.”

“We call it small Berlin,” Petr says.

SMALL BERLIN! That is PERFECT! That phrase encapsulates Karlín more succinctly than anything else I’ve heard.

Starting a Business

How do you suddenly decide to start a small business? Some people have the entrepreneurial fire in their belly from birth, but for some people, everything falls into place at the right time.

For Petr and Gabi, a married couple in their thirties, they were wanting something more out of life.

“We didn’t just want to sit at home, working behind our computers,” Gabi tells me.

“We wanted something when we can meet people. So, the first idea –” she turns to Petr. “I think you started making bread?”

“I suppose my ambition was to make sourdough bread,” Petr says with a smile. “A chance to do it properly.”

In 2019 both Petr and Gabi worked in web-related professions — Petr as a UX designer, Gabi as a paid search marketing specialist. In their free time, they ran a food blog, PG Foodies, as a hobby.

(Fun fact: I was also a paid search marketing specialist before quitting my job to travel the world. Unlike me, Gabi didn’t quit in grand fashion; as a freelancer, she simply decreased her workload over time.)

“I’m so thankful that I left everything behind,” sighs Gabi. “At first it was creative, like eight years ago, but then…”

“It became more technical than creative,” says Petr. “We felt a little bit tired of the IT environment.”

Being successful food bloggers, they had thought about doing something more with food. and then an opportunity arrived right in the heart of Karlín.

“We live just there,” Petr says, gesturing his head down the street. “We found this place. We fell in love with it. and we didn’t know what we would do withnullnull

1. Brew on Quay

Just the other side of the road from the harbour, Brew on Quay is a busy, warm, fun bar full of nautical charm and outstanding beer.

Finding a table can be tricky, especially on a Friday or Saturday, but in a good way. The atmosphere here is lively and friendly, and worth the wait if you don’t have a seat immediately.

Food offerings at the Brew on Quay look very enticing. The burgers in particular are large and tasty looking. If only we hadn’t had so much lunch!

2. Vultures’ Lane

A fun little bar in one of the coolest spots in the city, Vultures’ Lane is best in the heart of it. In the middle of Vulcan Lane, which is packed with cafés, bars and little eateries, this bar is the wood for the trees.

Find it, score a seat outside under the heaters and delight in viewing the to-ings and fro-ings of the Auckland nightlife while you sip on one (or two) of the outstanding beers these men stock.

3. The Jefferson

Tucked about as away as you can get off the street, The Jefferson is a dark, moody and very cool little whisky bar.

Its comprehensive whisky menu above the bar is practically as full as the shelves below it. Rows upon rows of outstanding drams will confuse you to the point where you’ll just want to purchase one of each to avoid FOMO.

Instead, ask the superb bar staff for help. They’ll point you in the exact direction of your new preferred whisky. Don’t forget, NZ makes whisky too – so why not try some here. They’ve got quite a few.

4. The Brit nee northern Steamship

Once known as the Steamship – this institution on the waterfront is now The Brit. This cool new bar has shrugged off the old-world feel of its predecessor with a clean, open design.

The small nautical nod to bygone days of sailors and seadogs keeps The Brit in line with its proximity to the harbour, but this shiny new gastro-pub is much more of a modern meeting place than a shanty shack.

Kick back here over a few tinnies and view the night evolve.

5. Shucker Brothers

Perhaps not an all-out bar, but this place serves some of the best oysters we’ve tried. A dozen finest along with a glass of sparkling and views out over the harbour and Queens Wharf, and you’re talking a prime spot for indulging.

There are outdoor seating options, but if you can score a spot at the window looking out, you’ve got the best of all worlds. The view, the warmth and the proximity to the bar to purchase more.

6. Charlie Farley’s

Ok, this isn’t in Auckland per se, but on Weiheke Island just off the coast of the city. If you’re going to Auckland, I presume you’ll want to visit this beautiful place, so here’s where to go!

Take the bus from the wharf all the way to the end and hop off at Onetangi. Light and airy, Charlie Farley’s is the ideal beachy bar with high ceilings, great views of the water, and many importantly great food and beer.

7. The one that got away

There’s always somewhere you discover after you’ve left a place. Dr Rudi’s Rooftop Brewery is just that.

We’re always on the lookout for rooftop bars, so we’re gutted to have missed Rudi’s. Overlooking one of the marinas of the Viaduct basin and just round the corner from Princes Wharf, Dr Rudi’s promises a cool vibe, great cocktails and – as its name suggests – even its own brewery. next time.

The Cape Byron Lighthouse has been an icon of the east coast of Australia for generations. It’s a monument to the sunrise, being the first to see the start to each Australian morning since 1901 when it was built.

Just behind the still-working lighthouse is the Cape Lighthouse Café, where – after watching the sun rise up out of the blue Pacific – you get to enjoy a private breakfast arranged for you by Wild Goat Events.

Saved from becoming a housing estate, this prime land on the outskirts of town is now one of the most extraordinary, sustainable farms and cooperatives in the world.

Most – if not all – of the produce grown here is used in the restaurant area of The Farm. Notably, Sydney-born three Blue Ducks restaurant is here, serving some outstanding food, plus The produce store and Bread Social You can come for a feed or just to explore the farm’s landscape.

It’s outstanding to see what a working farm should look like and what’s possible when you treat animals and produce with respect. The food that comes to your table from this farm is absolutely amazing, and the vibe here is enthralling and so positive.

Perhaps it’s something to do with Byron’s hippy heritage or maybe the fact that there’s just so much outstanding fresh, natural produce growing in abundance here. The food you can find in Byron Bay and its surrounds is just beautiful.

We were only here for a few days this last visit, but we ate so well it was hard to go home! From cheese boards in town and burata on the beach to fresh fish tacos and molecular cuisine in the country, you won’t go hungry here.
