HOW TO pack A expert travel very first aid set

Last Updated: 4/12/2021 | April 12th, 2021

I get a great deal of concerns about health and wellness care on the road. considering that I’m not a doctor, I don’t like providing medical recommendations beyond a few general ideas so I’ve asked Mike Huxley, a registered nurse as well as author of the blog Bemused Backpacker to pen a few articles on health and wellness as well as security on the road. This is the very first in a series on the subject.

A very first aid set is an important piece of devices on any type of space year or round-the-world adventure, however a lot of travelers aren’t sure precisely what they requirement to take with them. So right here is an professional guide on exactly how to pack a very first aid set as well as what to include in it.

I have been traveling the world for nearly fifteen years now, as well as in all that time I have patched up a lot more travelers’ scrapes as well as sprains than I can remember.

Thankfully quite much all of the occurrences I have dealt with so far have been minor. even during my time spent volunteering as an expedition medic in the Sahara, the jungles of Kalimantan as well as Borneo, as well as lots of other outstanding places, I have been able to offer with a lot of mishaps as well as injuries that have crossed my path.

I have only been able to do all of this, however, since I have always packed my reliable very first aid kit. It has progressed as well as been fine-tuned over the years, however I have always brought one.

As any type of experienced traveler or health and wellness expert will tell you, things can as well as sometimes do go wrong on any type of trip, as well as taking a well-stocked set with you is always advised.

When I very first started traveling, I did what a lot of practical people do as well as brought a commercially offered emergency very first aid kit.

However, over the years, with a great deal of experience as well as my nursing qualification behind me, I have fine-tuned my own set to show what I will utilize out on the road as well as what I understand what will produce a much much better very first aid set for the typical traveler too.

The finest very first aid kits are basic however different as well as will have a range of dressings as well as devices to offer with the absolute basics. a lot more importantly, they can be utilized with bit or no training. So what products must you include? right here are my picks for the essentials.

1. Plasters (Bandages)
It goes without stating that these are an absolute important in any type of very first aid kit. the most typical type of minor injury is a cut or a graze, so it is always a great concept to bring a handful of plasters in a range of sizes.

If you believe you will be doing a great deal of trekking on your travels as well as you aren’t utilized to that type of exercise, then some blister plasters are a great idea.

It isn’t needed to overdo it as well as bring so lots of you might begin your own small field hospital; just a few of each type will do, as you can always restock when you pass a pharmacy.

2. Gauze
Gauze is the medical jack-of-all-trades. I never bring a very first aid set without a supply of gauze in it, as well as I can’t tell you exactly how lots of times it has are available in beneficial over the years. It can be utilized to apply pressure to a wound, clean an injury, absorb blood, assist stop bleeding, as well as even type part of a fundamental dressing for small-to-medium wounds.

A clean wound as well as a layer of gauze kept down with either tape or a bandage is frequently sufficient to enable time for you to go as well as get it looked at by a professional.

The finest type of gauze to bring in a very first aid set is individually wrapped sterile squares. This eliminates the requirement to cut them to size when you requirement them swiftly as well as undoubtedly makes it much easier to keep the wound clean as well as sterile.

3. Crepe bandages (ACE or elastic bandages)
For when you have something a bit bigger than a cut, fundamental crepe bandages are beneficial for keeping little dressings clean as well as in location up until you can get some medical attention.

Remember, you’re only going to utilize them in an emergency as well as ideally only up until you can get some expert medical care, so you don’t requirement as well lots of of these, just one or two at most.

4. surgical tape
Surgical tape is one of those important emergency products for when you requirement to apply as well as safe gauze or a bandage to a wound, although plasters can do the exact same task if requirement be.

5. little scissors
These come basic in any type of commercially offered very first aid set (although you can get them individually too) as well as are undoubtedly beneficial for trimming gauze or bandages to size. just be cautious if you do bring scissors to make sure that your very first aid set goes in your inspected bag when you are in transit or else airline safety will take them off you.

6. Tweezers
Tweezers are one more product that frequently come basic in a lot of very first aid kits as well as can be beneficial for pulling out splinters, getting out bit bits of stone or dirt when cleaning a wound, or any type of number of other functional uses.

7. Antiseptic wipes
For some reason this has a tendency to be the one thing a lot of people ignore when believing of very first aid, however antiseptic wipes are an absolute important in any type of great pack. nobody wants a cut or wound to get infected, as well as antiseptic wipes are best for cleaning it before applying a dressing.

Just a little handful will suffice for a lot of packs. like a lot of fundamental items, they are simple to replace at any type of pharmacy when you run low.

8. Condoms
Apart from the evident benefits (staying sexually safe), these helpful bit products can be utilized as emergency water carriers or even full of ice as an emergency ice pack. I’ve personally never had any type of contact us to utilize them in that manner, however it is a helpful bit of info to keep in mind.

9. pain relief medication
A little pack of fundamental paracetamol (acetaminophen if you are American) or any type of of the associated brand names is normally sufficient, however ibuprofen or other similar medications are fine too. It doesn’t have to be elegant — generally whatever you usually take for pain relief when you have a headache or minor pain.

10. Loperamide tablets
Also understood under a range of brand names such as Imodium, this is beneficial for stopping diarrhea for short periods when you requirement to catch a bus or train. Remember, these are for those emergency moments only when you are really in transit, as they do not remedy diarrhea as well as shouldn’t be utilized when you can rest up for a couple of days. (Normally the very best method to treat diarrhea is to let whatever pass with your system usually as well as drink lots of water to replace lost fluids.)

If you utilize them sparely, properly, as well as as directed on the pack, loperamide tablets can be beneficial additions to any type of travel very first aid kit.

11. Antihistamine cream
It occurs to all of us on our travels: we get bitten by some type of insect as well as end up with a painfully itchy bump or rash. Don’t worry, the absolute majority of the time the bumps as well as stings aren’t anything to concern about at all, however they are damned annoying! This is why a great antihistamine cream is a beneficial addition to assist manage the itching as well as swelling.

12. Antibacterial creams
It’s likewise a great concept to bring antibacterial creams like Neosporin for any type of cuts as well as scrapes you get. This will assist heal them quicker in addition to stop any type of possible infections.

***
Obviously this listing can be tailored or added to depending upon your trip needs (a tropical jungle trip will need different planning than a city break in Europe). any type of great very first aid set must likewise include any type of specific, individually prescribed medication or antimalarial prophylaxis.

For the majority of travelers, however, the products as well as set provided above will cover the absolute majority of fundamental occurrences as well as accidents. You’ll likewise want to make sure you have detailed travel insurance coverage as well.

For any type of injury, illness, bang, or scrape that needs a lot more than the fundamentals as well as cannot be covered by the set above, you must seek expert medical attention. Unless you are very far off the beaten track, you must be able to seek out expert help to offer with medical emergencies quite quickly if something occurs you can’t manage yourself.

So go pack up your own bit very first aid set as well as keep it stashed in your pack for emergencies. chances are you will most likely never utilize it — as well as I hope you never requirement to — however if you have one, at least you can take pleasure in your travels with peace of mind as well as be risk-free in the understanding that you are prepared.

Important Note: When bring any type of generic medication, it is important that it is kept in its original packaging when you are traveling in situation customs officials requirement to inspect it. The info supplied right here is for general travel health and wellness recommendations as well as info only. It is supplied by a qualified nurse, however it is not a replacement for a personal consultation with a travel nurse specialist, your GP, or a physician specializing in travel medicine who can tailor recommendations to your private medical history as well as needs.

Casa Rap: The advantages of sluggish cooking in Batangas, Philippines

The bad Traveler as well as his bad good friend stared at each other as we had our very first spoonful. as well as with the type of smile that cut across our face, we understood having a stopover at Casa Rap for breakfast was totally worth all the time as well as the trouble.

Casa Rap, sometimes called cafe Casa Rap, is a restaurant tucked in a residential area along the highway in San Jose, Batangas. It was not extremely simple to find. None of the people we asked going right here understood about this cafe or where it was found exactly. Armed with info it was found in, we still boarded a jeepney as well as requested the driver to let us understand when we go into Barangay Banay-banay. unfortunately for us, the driver was forgetful. say thanks to God I spotted the inconspicuous wooden signage erected along the highway in spite of it being almost concealed by leaves as well as vines. Wondering whether I saw it right, it took me a couple more seconds before I asked the driver to stop. We had to walk a hundred lawns back.

The inconspicuous Casa Rap signage! watch out for this!

The Place

Casa Rap is nestled in a residential garden. The whole location really appeared like an old greenhouse with cluttered tables as well as chairs of diverse shapes as well as sizes. however it was a great type of clutter as it added character as well as a extremely “organic” feel to it. We had to walk almost the entire length of a covered pathway to the cafe, which we did not mind at all as bit vibrant flowers embellished the path. When we reached the place, we discovered ourselves alone. We were the very first clients of the day as well as we were the only ones at the time.

“Slow food cafe” written on the cover of the menu was the very first to grab our attention. The note explained exactly how they value the self-control of sluggish food cooking as well as it handled our expectations. since it was around 8am, we decided to get their breakfast meals. let the waiting begin!

Luckily, waiting proved to be not a difficult thing to do at Casa Rap. There was so much to look at. From the plants that served as the restaurant’s living ornaments to the figurines of angels to the framed broadsheet cutouts of favorable evaluations of the restaurant hanging on one publish to the calming messages published around the area, the restaurant fosters a relaxing as well as positive environment that any type of client will surely appreciate. It was like an art gallery satisfies a greenhouse satisfies a garden restaurant. Heck, even their restroom looked inviting.

Inside Casa Rap
One of the many inspiring messages you’ll discover inside
Wood as well as pebble dominated the general ambience of the floor. The restaurant ground is strewn with gravel from which wooden posts rise. The location is not equipped with aircon however who needs that when you’re surrounded with nature’s finest airconditioning system — trees! It was a breath of fresh air rather literally. At one point a poultry walked towards us as well as then around the restaurant. It was an entertaining as well as refreshing sight.

After putting our orders, I decided to check out the other parts of the restaurant. I saw their prayer Room, a little open-air corner where clients can spend time in for a moment of peace as well as prayer.

Next to it is a concrete staircase that will lead you along the edge of the fern-fringed cliff that goes deep to the peaceful river below. Believe me when I state it is steep. Going down may be fun however climbing back up may be rather a difficulty for some people. (And by some people I mean myself.)

The Food

The waitress served our hot chocolate first. We were a bit let down in the beginning upon seeing it as it was contained in a rather little cup. The hot choco, however, was phenomenal. It may not be that huge of a serving however it was thick as well as rich as well as delicious.

Thick, rich hot chocolate
It wasn’t long up until our orders were served. I had Tapang Casa Rap, which reminded me of the usual Tapang Taal (P130), my preferred since I was a kid. Unlike most tapas we have right here in Manila, Tapang Casa Rap is pork as well as sweeter. It was fried and, yes, a bit bit oily however the meat was tender as well as truly tasty.

Tapang Casa Rap (P130)
We requested vinegar as well as they provided us that. With these adorable chili peppers. I don’t understand what you phone call this… Cherry Chili Peppers?
Longganisang Hubad (P130)
My good friend Celine ordered Longganisang Hubad (P130) as well as she was kind sufficient to share some with me. The taste of the garlic wastruly strong, which I loved, as well as there was not much fat (unlike what I was utilized to). Both of us, however, had the exact same decision — it was as well salty for our taste. We just type of required ourselves to surface it.

For dessert, we had that legendary halo halo. different from the usual halo-halo we see in the streets or those served in metropolitan restaurants, this halo-halo did not have much ingredients. In fact, it only had three major components — macapuno, pinipig, as well as leche flan. as well as yes, ice as well as milk, of course. however they were sufficient to make it the most mouthwatering, most unforgettable as well as the best-tasting halo-halo I have tasted anywhere ever. as well as you shouldn’t take my word for it. Drive to Batangas as well as try it for yourself.

The world-tasting halo-halo. At least for me. Haha. (P80)
I had always wished to come back to Casa Rap since the moment we left the place. There were just so many products on their menu that I discovered interesting. Unfortunately, we had so bit time at the moment so we had to split right away. I guaranteed myself to come back with more good friends this time around as well as try a few of the other dishes that failed to satisfy my poor, always-rumbling tummy.

Six Months Later

Only six months after my very first see to Casa Rap, I discovered myself at its doorstep again. This time, with more friends.

After over 30 minutes, lunch was served. very first to find was the kalderetang baka (beef caldereta). It was not really our very first choice. We originally desired pork humba but, apparently, one needs to phone call in advance for it. Upon the suggestion of the waitress, we settled with kalderetang baka. It was a excellent decision! Unlike some caldereta versions that we were utilized to, Casa Rap’s was almost lacking sauce for it was somewhat absorbed by the meat. The tender beef pieces were completely covered with its super rich sauce that it was almost impossible to drip. Our group agreed that it was, hands down, the very best beef caldereta that ever graced our tastebuds. as well as the chili garnish (which appeared like a strawberry) was a excellent eye-candy, too!

Kalderetang Baka (Beef Caldereta) by Casa Rap
Next to be served was the casserole of sinigang na hipon. There were only three or four shrimps in that serving (I can’t recall the precise number however I keep in mind that none of us had more than one piece). It was completely cooked however there was truly nothing remarkably spectacular about it. Nevertheless, the perfect mix of the seafood flavor as well as the sourness of its soup did not disappoint at all.

Ginataang Tilapia by Casa Rap

But disappoint was precisely what the ginataang tilapia did. While the fish was soft as well as cooked just right, the coconut sauce tasted dull as well as as well thin for my taste.

The plate of miki-bihon, however, brought it back to positive town. Of all the kinds of pansit, I just like miki-bihon the very best since I like the combination of the tasty miki as well as the smooth bihon. Casa Rap’s version had lots of carrots, beans, as well as cabbage, which retained their natural crisp even after cooking. The poultry liver brought protein as well as iron to the mix. I liked it. It was served with calamansi.

EVERYTHING IS F*CKED: REFLECTIONS ON hope as well as travel WITH mark MANSON

Posted: 05/14/19 | may 14th, 2019

You satisfy a great deal of fascinating as well as wise people when you run an on the internet business as well as travel the world. one of the people I’ve satisfied is very popular author mark Manson. We had orbited each other for many years as well as lastly satisfied when he transferred to new York City.

We’ve been “real life” good friends ever since.

His very first book, The subtle Art of Not providing a F*ck, ended up being a runaway hit, selling over 8 million copies. (He composed a publish about exactly how travel made him the person is today, which laid the foundation for that book.)

Now, mark has a new book out today called, whatever is F*cked: A book about Hope. I got a copy to checked out in advance as well as it’s a truly incredible book about philosophy as well as exactly how to online a life of meaning as well as difficulty in our contemporary times. It provided me some great food for believed about problems or perspectives I hadn’t believed about before.

Today, mark as well as I chat about his new book!

Nomadic Matt: You have a new book out, whatever is F*cked: A book about Hope. Let’s talk about it. What would you state the core of this book is about?
Mark Manson: At its heart, this book is a look at exactly how to establish as well as preserve a sense of hope for ourselves as well as the world — as well as exactly how these really hopes impact us. We generally see hope as an unquestionably “good” thing, however I phone call that concept into concern in this book.

Would it be a thought about comply with as much as The subtle Art?
I’ve been calling it an “expansion” of the concepts from subtle Art. I believe it’s a deeper analysis as well as more complex application of the exact same concepts—values, pain/suffering, as well as our definitions of success. It’s type of like the calculus to subtle Art’s algebra or the chess to its checkers.

What influenced you to compose this book?
Well, just looking around at what is going on in the world. We’re living in a weird time in that materially, the world, as a whole, is the very best it’s ever been (less poverty, violence, more wealth, people living longer, etc.), yet psychologically as well as emotionally, people are having a hard time more than ever with discovering hope as well as meaning in their lives.

And what’s fascinating is that it’s the people from the wealthiest as well as most steady parts of the world who are experiencing these philosophical struggles the most.

On top of that, I’ve noticed in my own life, that as an older millennial, all the promises of my youth have turned out quite ugly. From the Web to my country as well as to my assumptions about relationships, friendships, community, it feels like there’s a great deal to be justifiably upset about — yet things are objectively better.

I’ve had my own struggles with discovering meaning as well as hope in my own life, in spite of the truth that, on paper, whatever is awesome. So, in that way, this book is type of my own method to kind with these issues.

Since this is a travel website, let’s talk about your book as well as travel. exactly how can travel make us less f*cked? Or can it?
I believe anything that boosts human empathy is extremely important as well as helpful at the moment. I likewise believe anything that can cause you to face your own value systems as well as concern them is incredibly useful.

Travel does both of those things extremely well.

It’s a bit ironic that by linking the world more than ever before, we’ve likewise come to objectify cultures more than ever before. whatever is about “the ‘Gram” so to speak. I believe a extremely mindful as well as culturally engaged type of travel is still paramount.

Like anything, travel can ended up being an getaway from one’s issues rather than a quest of some higher understanding. So, it’s important to always make sure you’re on the right side of that equation.

One element of the book I discovered truly fascinating was the formula forever as well as exactly how it associates with being a much better person (especially in relation to travel). Can you explain this concept a bit bit?
The formula of Humanity comes from the philosopher Emmanuel Kant as well as essentially states that the driving force behind all of our decisions as well as actions should always be people. That more than emotions, more than culture, more than group loyalties, our very first principle should always be to treat people (both ourselves as well as others) with dignity as well as respect.

And I believe travel forces one to method this.

It’s simple to sit on one side of the world as well as criticize people on the other. however when you go there as well as find that 99% of the people are good, decent people as well as really value the exact same things you do, it makes empathy more possible.

What can peoplediscover from your book that they can apply to their lives?
I believe there are five points that people can truly apply to their own life:

Why self-discipline needs comprehending your own emotions.

Why trauma as well as loss cause emotional dysfunction as well as exactly how we can overcome that dysfunction.

How every belief system is eventually a bit bit religious as well as we requirement to be cautious about that.

How to be more resilient.

How to be freer in a world of constant distraction as well as diversion.

You talk a great deal about exactly how our feelings brain being in manage as well as that we online in a feelings economy, where emotions run rampant. Can travel solidify that in any type of way? Can travel show us exactly how not to be keyboard warriors?
Unfortunately, there’s no method to NOT be irrational as well as emotional, as much as we’d sometimes like to. The key is to not withstand or attempt to modification our emotions however just work with them, rather than against them. things like anger, stress and anxiety or even despair can be extremely useful if channeled properly. The key is to establish the skill-set to channel them.

I believe like a great deal of things, travel amplifies who you already are. If you’re selfish as well as intolerant, then your travel experiences will show that. If you’re magnanimous or curious, then they will show that. A method that travel can be useful is that it is a tool to force you to work on elements of yourself that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to work on.

Do you struggle with being alone or caring as well much about what others think? travel alone.

Used to being pampered as well as upset over every bit thing? Go take a train with the Indian countryside. That’ll straighten you out genuine quick!

You mention a great deal of philosophers in your book (which I enjoyed since I got a great deal of book suggestions). What are some great books to checked out around this topic?
It’s interesting since I feel like philosophy is ending up being great in our culture. It makes sense since as all of our fundamental needs are taken care of, these concerns of existential meaning, purpose, as well as what to hope are more at the forefront of our minds, as well as those are all philosophical questions.

If you’re a total newbie to philosophy as well as want to get a fundamental comprehending of the Western canon, I suggest a book called Sophie’s world by Jostein Gaarder. It’s a fun fiction book that acts as type of a primer to the most important western thinkers.

If you’re into eastern philosophy, DT Suzuki’s books are a nice introduction to Zen Buddhism. The Tao Te Ching is extremely readable as well as thought-provoking. as well as Alan Watts’ books are indispensable.

And if you want to see exactly how applications of ancient philosophy are incredibly useful in today’s world. inspect out Jonathan Haidt’s The happiness hypothesis or Ryan Holiday’s The challenge is the Way.

You talk about exactly how we requirement pain to grow and, I think, part of experiencing pain is getting out of your comfort zone. What can travel teach us about pain as well as growth?
Painful travel is the very best kind. It’s like going to the fitness center for your mind as well as your comprehending of humanity. My very first trips to India as well as Africa were two of my most difficult as well as uncomfortable trips as well as today I believe back to them fondly since they were incredibly formative to my comprehending of the world.

India was shocking since of the quantity of beauty as well as human suffering squished into such confined spaces. You might see one of the most lovely things in your life as well as one of the most horrific things in your life, all within a few blocks of each other.

Africa was eye-opening since when you truly get out in the bush, you get a genuine sense of exactly how bit humans requirement to be happy. It’s cliché to state that money as well as possessions don’t make you happy, however when you see with your own eyes people who are feeling just fine having nothing more than a goat as well as a robe, it’s rather profound.

China was most likely the most alienating location I’ve ever been. I’ve never felt so foreign in my life. It’s the only location I’ve been where I’ve truly gotten the sense that I did not matter, at all. as well as just having to sit as well as online keeping that feeling for the two weeks I was there was rather impactful.

I believe it’s simple to fail to remember exactly how durable the human spirit is, exactly how many locations it can flourish, as well as exactly how quickly it can be happy. The very first time you see a kid crap on the side of the street, it suddenly grants a great deal of point of view the next time you grumble about poor Wi-Fi.

Ultimately, I suggest that a growing problem in the world today is that we aren’t challenged sufficient as well as that we don’t have meaningful struggles, so we have to invent meaningless ones to take their location as well as preserve a sense of hope.

Travel is a method to constantly difficulty yourself. Whether it’s traveling to a bad country or forcing yourself to research study a language or physically testing yourself with hikes as well as biking across continents. It’s indispensable.

Finally, in your own words, why should people buy this book?
Because it’s fucking awesome! And, just like my last book, I use stories as well as examples from around the world as well as from a number of different cultures to make my point.

There’s a soldier from Poland as well as a monk from Vietnam as well as historical fiction about Isaac Newton as well as a vignette about Friedrich Nietzsche as well as his over-sized mustache. What’s not to love?

(Matt says: as well as it truly is excellent like he says! pick up a copy, particularly if you enjoyed his last one!)

Mark Manson is a blogger, entrepreneur, as well as the very popular author of The subtle Art of Not providing a F*ck, which has offered over 8 million copies worldwide. He focuses on composing personal advancement advice that doesn’t suck. His website MarkManson.net is checked out by over 2 million people each month.

His new book, whatever is F*cked: A book about hope is now available. He lives in new York City.

MEXICO: A like story

Posted: 1/12/21 | January 12th, 2021

Some things just aren’t implied to be. Sometimes, no matter exactly how much you want something, the world seems to conspire against you.

While I believe you make your own fate, I do believe the world has a method of saying, “Hey, the timing isn’t right. You ought to rethink your plans.”

So it was with my relocation to Mexico.

Last year, I composed exactly how I had organized to relocation there for the winter.

I needed a mental break, wished to save money by renting out my apartment, as well as had a number of buddies living there. My goal was to work, eat tacos, have a bit social bubble, as well as spend a great deal of time socially distanced at the beach.

But, thanks to a new administration business that refused to enable me to sublease my apartment, those plans withered away. as well as while I’m not above having somebody online there “under the radar,” many people in Texas requirement a vehicle — as well as a car parking pass for my building would certainly need my residential or commercial property administration company’s approval.

Thus there would be no winter season in Mexico for me.

But I found something during this process: Mexico is awesome.

Yes, I understand I’m late to this party. So late that the holds are cleaning the dishes as well as asking me where the heck I was all night.

Mexico is not some undiscovered land. nowhere I went might be thought about “off the beaten path.”

But while it was not my very first time in the country — I’d briefly touched its shores as part of a cruise as well as when spent three days in a resort on a press trip method back in 2011 — it was my very first time truly seeing it.

Before this trip, I never provided Mexico much thought. It’s just a few hours away from Austin, so I had always figured I might go there anytime. Why go to Mexico when I might see French Polynesia instead?

People seldom check out their own backyard. To many, travel is about long flights as well as faraway destinations.

So it was for me for a long time. though in recent years Mexico increased higher on my listing of locations to go to as much more buddies raved about it, it just never seemed to make it to the top. I’d make plans to go, only to be distracted by a shiny item (i.e., some other country).

Oh, exactly how I regret that after seeing what I’d been missing!

Mexico is magical.

In the six weeks I was there, I spent close to three in Tulum (which was terrible), one in Playa del Carmen, five days in the Yucatán, as well as two weeks in Oaxaca.

The original plan was to spend a few weeks in Tulum then relocation to Playa del Carmen, where some buddies lived. We’d type our bit social bubble, as well as I’d get some work done as well as stay up until March. however by week three, I understood that wasn’t going to happen. I hated Tulum as well as I didn’t truly vibe with Playa. (Here’s a long publish on why I hated Tulum in situation you missed it.)

Playa was nice. There was a beautiful beach, some great restaurants as well as bars, as well as great deals of digital nomads. I can see myself going back, satisfying people, as well as partying on the beach. however in the age of COVID, that’s not what I wished to do, so Playa didn’t truly feel like the location to be best now.

Between that as well as my house situation, I realized my stay in Mexico was concerning an earlier end than planned.

But what to finish with my staying time that was likewise COVID safe?

While in Tulum, a buddy as well as I took a vehicle to Yucatán — which was like crossing over into Shangri-La. Suddenly, the roads got better. Masks were being used everywhere, there were limitations on group sizes, as well as company hours were limited. right here was somewhere that took COVID seriously — as well as I liked it. The area felt safe, as well as its situation count (only a few lots a week in the entire state) showed that.

It was likewise the very first time because I landed that I truly felt like I was in one more country, not someplace developed for tourists who desired a “safe” version of Mexico. I liked the Spanish architecture, the amazing as well as diverse cuisine, and, of program — as clichéd as it is — the people. So numerous people just wished to stop as well as talk, as well as I felt a great deal of hospitality there.

In Mérida, we discovered Mezcalería La Fundación, a mezcal bar suggested by a few bloggers, however it seemed closed. On a whim, I chose to walk around the block to this hot canine restaurant I had seen as well as ask if they understood if the bar would be open later.

“The bar closed permanently since of the pandemic,” she replied.

“Crap,” I stated relying on my friend. “I assumption we’ll go to the market now.”

The server relied on the other man in the shop and, in Spanish as well quick for me to understand, started talking, as well as then relied on me. “This man will take you to a location nearby. It’s extremely good.”

So we complied with a complete stranger back down the street toward the closed mezcal bar. At first, I believed there had been some miscommunication, however he knocked on one more door instead, one so barely visible I had walked past it twice. A guy came out, words were spoken, as well as we were told to go in.

“Whoa,” I exclaimed. “We’re in a mezcal speakeasy!” I was beaming, as I like speakeasies as well as elegant mixed drink bars.

“Ohh, this is not the speakeasy,” the bartender said. “For that, comply with me.”

He walked to the far end of the bar, then opened the bookcase into one more trick bar. A bar within a bar!

“What’s this bar’s name?” I asked.

“We have no name,” the hostess said.

“How do people discover this place?”

“You have to have our number. It gets shared by word of mouth.”

After a few drinks in the trick bar, we satisfied the owner, Roberto. He utilized to work in marketing however got exhausted of it as well as started a mezcal brand. The bar we were in, Acervo, opened a year back however was kept relatively secret. The speakeasy, which has no name, social media, or site however does have a gorgeous outside garden, was started best before the pandemic.1

On hearing we were going to Oaxaca, he provided me the number of his friend. “He’ll instruct you all about mezcal.”

Then into the night we went; music as well as dancing filled streets as well as plazas.

Even against the backdrop of the pandemic, Yucatán, as well as particularly its capital, Mérida, adhering to public health and wellness rules, showed that you might balance life as well as COVID as well as still keep situation counts low. (Admittedly, this is aided by their capability to be able to do outdoors as well as spaced apart.)

But, while I liked Mérida, it was Oaxaca that truly made me swoon.

Have you ever showed up somewhere as well as before you understand it, something in the air just tells you that this location is best for you? That it’s whatever you ever desired as well as you’re going to be in like with it forever?

That was Oaxaca for me. The food, the mezcal, the architecture, as well as (of course) the people were amazing. The city is a mix of contemporary buildings painted in bright colors, historic Spanish colonial churches, cobblestone streets, as well as great deals of parks.

In the last decade, as mezcal has ended up being extremely popular, Oaxaca has likewise ended up being the hub for all things mezcal, with tourists reaching record numbers before COVID. And, together with Mérida as well as Mexico City, it’s thought about one of the gastronomic centers of Mexico.

My expat buddies as well as I ate as well as drank our method with the city. We found the hamburguesa, an Oaxacan street burger that contains beef, ham, hot dogs, two type of cheese, pineapple, tomatoes, as well as lettuce, all in a grilled bun (it’s as tasty as it was unhealthy); ate great deals of moles, tacos, as well as Oaxacan cheese; as well as went to the mountains to see some ruins as well as discover exactly how Mezcal was produced. And, of course, we satisfied Roberto’s buddy, who did certainly provide us an academic mezcal tasting on his bar’s rooftop (and who assisted my buddy discover her house when she chose to stay in Oaxaca for the winter).

***
I was amazed by exactly how much I liked Mexico. Sure, it has problems: numerous cities are no-go zones since of cartels, corruption is rife, there’s a great deal of violence as well as poverty, as well as it provided its people no support to weather condition the pandemic. “You’re on your own,” stated the government.

And there’s a great deal I still requirement to discover about the country. I only saw a small sliver of it with mezcal-tinted glasses. There’s a great deal much more to see as well as a great deal much more of the culture, people, as well as life I needed to learn. I barely scratched the surface.

But that’s all the much more reason to return.

I can’t believe I missed this location for so long.

What I trick I was!

I won’t make the exact same error twice.

1- If you want to go to the speakeasy, you requirement to make a reservation. text +52 999 658 1678 for that evening’s password. On Thursdays, they have jazz.

2 – Let’s talk COVID. Mexico is open for tourism. It doesn’t need any type of testing or quarantining. (I got a PCR test before I went since it’s just the best thing to do.) as well as that’s why so numerous people go there to party. I mean, Tulum was insane, as well as I was pleased to get out of there. Masks as well as limitations were enforced in Yucatán as well as Oaxaca, however not so much in Quintana Roo (where Tulum, Playa del Carmen, as well as Cancún are).

But, frankly, I wouldn’t recommend going to Mexico best now. situations have risen a great deal because I very first went as well as even once-safe locations like Oaxaca aren’t so risk-free anymore. I understand that seems hypocritical of me because Iwas just there — however things were different in November and, if I had to make the exact same decision now, I wouldn’t do it. Mexico can wait.

ISTANBUL: top 5 Scams to watch Out for (And exactly how to prevent Them)

I was wandering alone, taking snaps of the blue Mosque, when a guy asked me to take a picture of him with the mosque in the background utilizing his phone. Being the kind person that I am (haha, yes, I have to insert that), I obliged. I even took a significant amount of time since I desired it to be perfect. I waited for the crowd behind him to remove up as well as made sure the light hit him right. funny exactly how it was all for nothing!

After taking his pic, I returned his phone as well as bade goodbye, however he had one more idea. He started getting friendly, asking me concerns about where I was from as well as exactly how I was liking Istanbul so far. however he asked me something that rang the alarm bells: “Maybe we can tour together. Are you with someone?”

Hmmmmm. Hmmmmmmmmmmmm.

You only ask that concern for either of these reasons: you want to screw with me (wink, wink) OR you want to screw me over. as well as I’m guessing he had the latter in mind (because look at me!). as well bad, he was cute.

I responded to I was with someone, which is true, as well as walked away to satisfy Vins, my ever trustworthy blogging partner, by the Sultanahmet Park fountain. He had an fascinating story. He stated that as he was photographing Hagia Sophia, a guy asked him to take a photo with his phone. then the guy tried to strike a conversation, asked if he was alone, as well as brought up the concept of them checking out the city together. Vins left immediately. two super friendly strangers at two locations doing the precise exact same thing? I extremely question that it’s a coincidence. My bet is they’re part of an elaborate, organized scam.

Istanbul is a excellent city. however like most excellent cities, it has its share of poor people trying to take advantage of our being new as well as naive. right here are five scams to watch out for as well as exactly how their modi operandi (MO) work.

WHAT’S covered IN THIS GUIDE?

1. Taxi Scams (Meter Tampering as well as money Switching)
2. shoe radiate Scam
3. “Let’s have a Drink” Scam
4. The Carpet shop Scam
5. restaurant Scams

1. Taxi Scams (Meter Tampering as well as money Switching)

I can explain this to you in detail since we really fell sufferer to this. Normally, we would take the tram to get to anywhere, however we were in a huge rush that day as I had to go to a dinner. We approached the queue of cabs near the Eminonu Station.

Their goal: Take advantage of you not being familiar with Istanbul’s streets as well as Turkish bills.

Their usual spots: Touristy areas like Sultanahmet, Eminonu, as well as Taksim Square.

Their MO: They usually try to pull a three-hit combo: utilizing tampered meter or not utilizing the meter at all, taking long detours, as well as money switching.

Not utilizing the meter. Some would firmly insist on not utilizing the meter. Don’t let them.

Using tampered meter. The cab we hired from Eminonu, utilized a meter that moved a great deal more quickly than usual. A cab trip from Sultanahmet to Beşiktaş should be just around try 20. Ours made it past try 100. A fellow traveler whom we had talk to the day after had the exact same experience, noting exactly how the meter was so fast. other drivers likewise protect themselves by stating that evening rates are different. Don’t believe it. There utilized to be a difference, however it has been abolished.

Taking unnecessary detours. We were surprised that the taxi driver took the long method to get to our hotel in Beşiktaş. It was already our third day in the city as well as we were already familiar with the area. He utilized terrible web traffic as an excuse. He then took us around, taking unnecessary turns.

Switching money. Some drivers would switch your expenses when it’s time to pay. When you provide him a TRY50 note, he would grumble that you had provided him a TRY5 note. They do it so quick you won’t even notice. Don’t autumn for this. He tried to pull this on us, too.

HOW TO AVOID

Always firmly insist on utilizing the meter. If they won’t budge, discover one more cab.

Seek assistance from hotel staff. If you stay at a hotel or hostel, ask the reception to phone call a cab for you.

Pretend you’ve been in Istanbul a long time. Although it doesn’t hold true all the time, one of a great indication that your driver is as much as no great is asking you if it’s your very first time in Istanbul. It’s usually their signal if they would try to screw you or not. First-time visitors are the most gullible. If you’re asked, tell them you’ve been in town for rather a while now. Don’t tell them it’s your very first time.

Insist on dropping you off right in front of the hotel. Some drivers who are planning to con you would discover an reason to not decrease you off at the hotel. Don’t buy this. They understand that a scammed tourist’s very first defense is seek assist from hotel staff.

Be familiar with the right taxi fare. The flat rate is TRY4 as well as TRY2.5 is added per kilometer. If the cab isn’t moving a TRY0.35 is added per minute. A minimum fare of 10TL is likewise in effect, so even if your meter states something lower when traveling short distances, you will still be charged 10TL. These are exactly how much a cab trip should truly cost. (Estimates only)

From Atatürk worldwide flight terminal to Sultanahmet: try 50-55

From Sahiba Gökçen flight terminal to Sultanahmet: try 125-130

From Sultanahmet to Beşiktaş: try 25

From Sultanahmet to Galata Tower: try 20

From Sultanahmet to Taksim Square: try 20

From Sultanahmet to Atatürk Airport: try 50-55

From Sultanahmet to Sahiba Gökçen Airport: try 125-130

Don’t back down. If they try to pull their stunts on you, tell them you’re calling the police.

Or, just utilize Uber. tried it several times as well as it never dissatisfied us. (Update 2017: Uber has been banned in Istanbul.)

2. shoe radiate Scam

When we shared on our Facebook page that we had been scammed by a taxi driver, one of our followers recounted her personal experience with one more scam. This time, it includes your shoes as well as huge heart.

Their goal: force you to pay for an overpriced shoeshine.

Their usual spots: Touristy areas like Sultanahmet.

Their MO: While walking, a shoeshine guy will decrease one of his tools in front of you. Usually, it’s a brush. You, being increased well by your parents, will of program pick it up as well as hand it to him. huge mistake! He will say thanks to you profusely, as well as as a indication of gratitude, he will offer to radiate your shoes for free. except that it is not free at all. When it’s done, he will fee an amount so huge you may feel the requirement to kick him with your recently polished shoe.

How to avoid: If you see a clean decrease from anyone, I don’t wanna state ignore it, but… ignore IT. keep walking as well as move on.

3. “Let’s have a Drink” Scam

Their goal: Take you to a club where you would pay for the most costly drink of your life.

Their usual spots: Touristy areas like Sultanahmet, Eminonu, as well as Taksim Square.

Their MO: You understand the guy who asked me to take a picture of him at the begin of this post? My gut tells me this is his forte. To gain your trust, these scammers would usually pretend to be tourists just like you or an expat (they would introduce themselves as such). Their very first line is usually, “Where are you from?” as well as they’re so adept at this that whatever you answer, they have a response that can be rather engaging.

They will offer to tour with you as well as for a moment you’re gonna have a blast with them. as well as then they will invite you to a club for a drink or — if you’re a dude — a date with quite women. You’ll go with them since you’re having a excellent time with your new friend. You have a drink as well as enjoy. however when the expense arrives, you’ll be surprised by exactly how much they’re charging you numerous Euros just for one fucking drink. They will try to make you pay for it, detain you, as well as endanger you up until this ridiculous expense is settled.

How to avoid: Unless you satisfied them at your hostel, don’t talk to strangers who approach you very first no matter exactly how friendly (or goodlooking, haha) they are. When somebody approaches you, tell them you’re part of a group as well as you’re waiting on them.

4. The Carpet shop Scam

Their goal: Take you to a carpet, rug, or leather shop which is method more costly than usual. tour you around as well as then take you to a shop selling rugs or rugs for a much higher rate.

Their usual spots: Sultanahmet area as well as Grand Bazaar

Their MO: While going around touristy places, somebody who will introduce himself as regional would offer to tour you around. He appears like a legitimate tour guide as well as understands so much about the monuments in the city. He will even ask you to join him have Turkish coffee. He will then state that he needs to decrease off something at a shop, where you will be required or guilted into buying at a much costly rate.

How to avoid: Unless you satisfied them at your hostel, don’t talk to strangers who approach you. should you truly requirement a tour guide, book with a trusted travel agency.

5. restaurant Scams

Their goal: To make you pay for food at an astronomical cost or food you never ordered.

Their MO: You step into a restaurant as well as then somebody will provide you the menu. You see the costs are okay; whatever seems affordable. however the waiter will extremely motivate you to try something off the menu. He will be so pushy, you will provide in. The meal was nothing extraordinary, however when the expense arrives, you’re surprised to be charged for numerous liras. They will firmly insist that you pay for it.

In some restaurants, you will be served Turkish pita bread as soon as get seated or location an order. as well as that’s okay; it’s normal. however then, while you wait on your actual order, the stewards will serve a couple of dishes as well as firmly insist that you try them. You may even believe they’re complimentary. Or if you odor something fishy, so you’ll tell the waiter you don’t want it. however he’s truly persistent. You’ll get tired arguing so you’ll most likely let them put it on your table as well as not touch it. however then, even when you’re refrained from doing yet, they will serve one more dish. as well as when the expense comes, you’re charged for everything, even those you did not even touch. This occurred to us at a restaurant in Beşiktaş. as well as when we inspected online, other tourists have complained about the exact same thing on evaluation websites.

How to avoid: checked out evaluations very first before entering a restaurant. always request the cost before you order. as well as if they’re serving you food that you never ordered, tell them you’ve been in Istanbul for a long time.

Where to stay: We stayed at Puffin Hostel (cheap as well as recommended), W Istanbul hotel (excellent as well as extremely suggested however pricey!), as well as Galata West Hostel (awful, not recommended).

LIFE ON THE road AS A GAY couple

Updated: 12/03/19 | December 3rd, 2019

One thing we haven’t focused on this site is LGBT travel and, as we bring in a broader variety of visitor interviews, I wished to highlight LGBT visitors as I’m curious to discover about their experiences traveling around the world, as lots of countries have strict anti-gay laws. So when Auston emailed me about being the next visitor profile, I jumped at the opportunity. I wished to understand exactly how he as well as his other half deal with or have dealt with any type of discrimination as well as his recommendations for others. He sat down with me essentially over email to talk.

Nomadic Matt: Hi, Auston! tell everybody about yourself.
Auston: David as well as I satisfied in 2005 when I was 23 at Arizona specify University. We swiftly started dating in 2006 as well as got married in 2010. In 2008, I was used a task in Chicago, so we moved as well as started planning our utmost our getaway from typical life.

Our original plan was to travel for one year as well as then return to the US, however that never happened, as well as now we’re living in Spain. I’m working freelance as both an engineer as well as travel writer. We continue to travel as well as compose for our blog, two poor Tourists, where we supply our visitors with travel ideas as well as stories about festivals, events, as well as gay-friendly destinations.

What influenced your trip?
I’ve always been influenced by travel from a young age. I was always inspired to travel as well as discover about different cultures. David traveled abroad lots of times for volunteer work in locations like Mexico, the Dominican Republic, Tanzania, as well as Belize.

Upon moving to Chicago, I understood that our stay would only be temporary. As much as I liked the city, I couldn’t manage those brutal winters as well as wished to step to the West Coast. The concept of traveling for a year unexpectedly came into my head as well as we started saving promptly in really hopes that we might really last a year on the road.

We left in may of 2012 as well as organized to travel with central America, Europe, Africa, as well as Southeast Asia. however after our trip was over in 2013, we made a decision to step abroad as well as continue traveling from our house base in Spain.

How did you save for your trip?
We saved for our trip in just about every method possible. I produced a strict budget plan as well as cut out all the unnecessary luxuries like cord TV, eating out, and buying new clothes. For a while, I even clipped vouchers — the bane of my existence!

Every additional cent went into a cost savings account. The only traveling we did during this time around was occasional trips back house to Arizona to see family.

We offered all of our personal belongings as well as earned some additional money by putting higher-value things on eBay or Craigslist. Our final push to get sufficient for our trip was holding a rummage sale. We passed out flyers in our parents’ communities as well as asked good friends as well as household to donate any type of home products they wished to get rid of. between two lawn sales, we earned an additional $1,500 in just one weekend.

But the greatest saver was absolutely getting our flights for nearly free. We booked two round-the-world tickets with us Airways with four years’ worth of travel hacking as well as only paid $550 in taxes overall for both flights.

In the end, we saved almost $35,000 overall as well as really hoped our cost savings would keep us on the road for a year. We almost satisfied that goal: the money lasted 11 months before running out.

What recommendations on cost savings do you have for others?
You truly requirement to believe about your priorities when you’re saving for a huge trip. If you’re motivated, you can save a great deal by cutting out everyday expenses. If you eat out often or have a everyday Starbucks habit, cutting these can save you a great deal of money over time. You’ll most likely requirement to save for a least a year or a lot more for a long trip, so begin planning early.

It’s finest to have a overall cost savings goal for your trip as well as then produce a monthly costs budget plan so you can track your progress. It may not be the most fun, however the payoff of taking a long-lasting trip is worth the effort.

How did you stay on budget plan when you traveled?
Staying on budget plan while traveling can be difficult, particularly when traveling as a couple. David as well as I each have different concepts as well as values about exactly how much to spend as well as exactly how much to cut out. David is the spender, while I’m the saver. We fought a great deal over this problem — the a lot of ever in our eight years together as well as the anxiety of the trip truly threatened our relationship.

The technique is to discover the ideal balance between making your money last while not cutting out the aspects that make your trip interesting as well as worthwhile. In general, we stayed in hostels or budget plan accommodations as well as even Couchsurfed to save money. We did the normal backpacker thing: cooked our own meals, took public transportation, as well as always “pre-drink” in development before we went out for a night of partying.

A great deal of people state my site is as well focused on solo travel. As somebody traveling as a couple, did you discover that to be the case?
There’s a area in the blogosphere for each type of travel. Naturally, when you travel solo you tend to compose about travel in that method as well as it’s your expertise. For me, I’ve mainly traveled with David so I understand the ins as well as outs of traveling together.

Traveling as a couple has its own difficulties that you won’t deal with alone or when traveling with friends. It can be both an experience that strengthens a connection or one that pulls you apart. I got a great deal of useful info from the site that assisted me plan the trip. I even saved $200 on Eurail passes from one of the ebooks I downloaded.

Luckily, the planning process for traveling solo versus as a couple is not all that different, so the site is beneficial for either situation.

You as well as your partner are gay. Did you deal with a great deal of prejudice on the road? If so, exactly how did you offer with it?
We were lucky to deal with extremely bit prejudice during our year-long trip. however we did take special steps to prevent issues when traveling to locations like Africa or Asia, where gay rights don’t exist.

In fact, during a lot of of our trip, we didn’t wear our wedding event rings since we didn’t want to phone call interest to ourselves. In extreme cases, like during our time in Africa, we had made up fundamental stories about exactly how we understood each other, pretending to just be good friends traveling together. There was one time when I got caught in a extremely uncomfortable circumstance while taking a bus in Ghana. A regional was extremely interested that we were checking out Ghana as well as wished to understand whatever about our personal lives.

It ended up turning into a conversation full of lies which ended up being particularly awkward. I promptly turned my Facebook profile totally personal after that incident. There were likewise a couple times in Africa where we were required to book a space with single beds considering that we were two people together.

What recommendations do you have for other LGBT travelers?
Being gay must never be a reason not to travel. So long as you take the ideal precautions you can still make the most of your trip while staying safe. If you’re traveling to less established countries, it’s crucial to understand exactly how LGBT people are treated in that country.

For Americans, Travel.state.gov is an exceptional resource that supplies as much as date info for LGBT travelers.

It’s likewise a great concept to keep in mind to respect other cultures when you’re visiting, even if you don’t agree with their legislations or customs. For example, if you’re traveling in a religious or conventional country, you requirement to be very cautious not to be affectionate in person. Not only can this make locals uneasy however it can really endanger your security in some places.

What recommendations would you have for others trying to do what you did?
The plentiful amount of info offered to travelers can often produce a difficulty when trying to sift with it all. I did months of research study just to choose what to pack for our trip. I believed whatever was perfect, however within a couple weeks of traveling, I realized that my priorities were different from others as well as I ended up getting a lot more clothes as well as shoes while on the road than everybody recommended.

With that said, the very best recommendations is to plan your journey well however likewise be prepared to be versatile as well as make modifications as you choose what is or isn’t crucial to you.

What was the hardest part about travel?
The hardest part for me during our year-long trip was being regularly on the move. It was incredible to see as well as experience all the locations we traveled to, however the inconsistency that occurs as a result is a difficult. When I had a home, I had a routine. however when you’re regularly staying in new places, you never understand the availability of facilities or exactly how to get around. often we would spend an hour just discovering a supermarket to cook a basic meal.

Now that our year of being nomadic is over, I have a great balance however continue to deal with new challenges. considering that we’re now expats living in Europe, there is the constant struggle of trying to apply for visas. David as well as I at first used for a long-lasting visa in France when we very first transferred to Europe.

But now that we’ve made a decision to online in Spain, trying to acquire a home visa is a significant pain. If same-sex marriage were legal in our house specify of Arizona, we might have used together as spouses when David acquired his visa to show English in Spain. however provided that our marriage was never lawfully recognized, I have to apply on my own, which is much a lot more difficult, expensive, as well as time-consuming.

The easiest?
Ironically, I believed the hardest part of doing our trip would be selling all our personal belongings as well as moving away from the US, however that swiftly [turned out to be] the simplest. when we made the decision to get rid of everything, a weight was lifted off my shoulders. There was no a lot more concern about where we would store our stuff, exactly how we would step it across the country or exactly how much it would cost.

Knowing that the only crucial personal belongings were what I brought on my back was an incredible feeling, as well as it was so freeing to understand that I might pick up at any type of moment as well as go somewhere else.

Living in Madrid has been easy. David always wished to online right here as well as I desired enhance my Spanish. Plus, there’s a thriving gay neighborhood with a few of the very best gay nightlife in Madrid as well as lots of gay-friendly accommodations for LGBT travelers.

Any parting advice?
I hear all as well commonly from people that they desire they might do what I do as well as exactly how lucky they state I am. however the truth is that I made a life decision — a drastic life decision — that enabled me to travel as well as online the method I want. a lot of people are not ready to take this step. as well as the reality is that a lot of middle-class people from established countries have just as much chance as we do. The difference is that we seized it.

Many people (especially Americans) state that they can’t travel since of school, work, or family. however my recommendations to people is to believe about what is eventually important.

Who’s to state you can’t travel since of work? have you ever asked your business for a lot more time off? Why can’t you travel with your family?

If it’s as well expensive, try home swapping to prevent paying for accommodations.

Can’t pay for worldwide flights? indication up for a credit score card that earns airline miles.

There are so lots of choices that make travel a possibility however the primary issue people have is acknowledging that they can do it. So if I can leave one final piece of advice, it would be to modification your understanding as well as tell yourself that you can travel. difficulty yourself as well as discover a method to do it.

You can checked out a lot more about Auston as well as David on their blog TwoBadTourists.com. They cover a great deal of LGBT problems on their web site as well as have some terrific recommendations for travelers about the subject.

HOW TO get PAID WHEN YOUR flight IS delayed

Posted: 3/27/21 | March 27th, 2021

Things don’t always go as planned on the road. lost luggage, delayed flights, travel scams — there are tons of things that can derail your trip.

While serendipity, mishaps, and surprises are part of the allure of travel, the one mishap no one likes is a delayed flight.

There’s no fun in missed connections and long delays, especially after little sleep and long travel days.

As someone who flies regularly, I’ve experienced pretty much every hiccup there is. Delays, cancelations, lost or delayed luggage, overbooked flights — the list goes on.

While I always get travel insurance before I go abroad, there is actually a company out there designed specifically to help travelers safe compensation when flight delays and cancelations strike.

It’s called Airhelp.

Since its founding in 2013, AirHelp has helped over 16 million people get compensation for delays and canceled flights arriving in or departing from the European Union.

I used them in 2019 when I was on my way to Paris. My connecting flight was delayed over eight hours and, thanks to EU rules, I was entitled to get compensation from the airline.

The problem was that I didn’t really want to chase tap Air Portugal for months on end. people said that they drag the process out in hopes you’ll give up (which lots of do). As someone who was only in Europe for a short time, I realized the last thing I wanted was to spend my little time in living in Paris on the phone with TAP. I indicate who wants that kind of stress in the land of wine and cheese?

So I decided to use AirHelp.

In the end, it took about five months before I was refunded my money. but it was refunded and all I had to do was fill out a small form. AirHelp took a considerable percentage, but I got everything the EU said I was legally entitled to receive.

So, if you’re traveling to/from Europe on a European carrier and there’s a mishap and you’re wondering what to do, here’s an overview of how AirHelp can help you get compensated for delayed and canceled flights:

What Does AirHelp Cover?

The EU has strong consumer protection laws, which means that if you have a flight arriving in or departing from the European Union and it is delayed or canceled, or if you experience certain other circumstances, you may be entitled to compensation, which ranges from $300 to $700 USD, depending on the severity of the delay.

Note: If your flight does not originate or arrive in the EU, or if the carrier is not headquartered in the EU, you’ll be unable to apply for compensation.

Here’s a quick overview of what is covered by AirHelp:

Delays of over three hours where the airline is at fault (i.e., no weather delays)

Flights canceled with 14 days of departure and no suitable alternative is offered

Overbooked flights

Missed connections due to delay, cancelation, or overbooking

Lost or damaged luggage

For an in-depth look at AirHelp’s coverage policies, check out its in-depth guidelines.

How Do I submit a Claim?

To make a claim, simply visit AirHelp.com and follow the prompts, with your flight details and boarding pass at hand. It takes two minutes and is super easy. The site will tell you ideal away if you have a claim.

You can apply for compensation for delayed flights up to three years after the date, which means if you’ve had a flight to or from the EU with a three-hour delay (or more) sometime in the past three years, then you can still make a claim for compensation.

Does AirHelp cost Money?

Making a claim is free. You only pay AirHelp if it wins your compensation claim. It will take 35% of the compensation, however (50% if they have to go to court).

While that is a substantial percentage, remember, you only have to do two minutes of work. Not a bad trade if it wins you a couple of hundred bucks!

Does AirHelp work for Flights in the US?

In the us government’s own words, “There are no federal laws requiring airlines to supply passengers with money or other compensation when their flights are delayed.”

In order to apply for compensation via AirHelp, your flight need to take off from the EU or land in the EU — and be flown by an airline with headquarters in the EU.

Unfortunately, if you’re flying a us airline, you won’t be entitled to compensation unless that airline has its own policy stating otherwise.

How Do the compensation rules work in the EU?

EU guideline EC 261 is the main protective piece of legislation that protects passenger rights in Europe. It’s the driving force behind your ability to make a claim.

Under EC 261, you are entitled to file a delayed flight claim for $700 (600 EUR) if:

You arrived at your destination a lot more than three hours late.

The flight took off in the EU (from any airline) or landed in the EU (provided that the airline is headquartered in the EU).?

You checked in for your flight on time.

Your flight operated no a lot more than three years ago.?

The airline is responsible for the delay (operational circumstances, technical difficulties, etc.).?

It doesn’t matter whether the airline has already provided you with food or travel vouchers — they will still owe you compensation. As long as you meet the above requirements (even if you’re not an EU citizen or citizen) you’ll be covered and eligible to make a claim.

Why Not just Do It Myself?

You can absolutely chase down an airline for compensation if you have time. Some airlines make it relatively easy while others will make you jump through hoops. If you have the time and patience, you can do it yourself and keep 100% of your compensation.

I didn’t want to do it myself. Time is money!

And I certainly don’t need a lot more stress in my life.

AirHelp’s fee is pretty big but 35% to not have to deal with this was worth it to me.

You’ll save a ton of time and increase your chances of getting compensation by using AirHelp. It has a proven track record and knows how to get your money as swiftly and conveniently as possible.

***
The next time your flight is canceled or delayed, don’t just clear up for a voucher. Take two minutes and run a claim through AirHelp. A few hundred bucks in your pocket is better than nothing, especially when you could be spending that money on your next trip!

Note: This isn’t a paid advertisement. AirHelp did not supply me any compensation to write this. This is just a review of the service as lots of readers keep asking me about my experience using them.
