The best Smartphone apps for travel bloggers

“What are the essentials you can’t leave the country without?” As a travel blogger, it’s a question that I am frequently asked.

But it’s a question that I always have a ready answer to: a good pair of shoes, a good book, a passport (!) and a good smartphone. A ideal pair of shoes allows comfortable and pleasurable unlimited walks, the only physical exercise I do these days. A good book inspires and allows me to think and feel; it’s like a mental and emotional workout. A passport – well, that’s self-explanatory!

But the most powerful must-have for me is the one I keep in my pocket – a smartphone. Sure, as travelers, you can argue that we actually can travel without them (although it’s going to be a dull trip). but when blogging is involved, it’s a different story. It becomes an essential, at least for us. Living a nomadic life entails ensuring that we connect with our readers regularly, keep ourselves updated with what’s happening around us and back home, and empower ourselves with the best tools. and tools are aplenty. There are thousands of travel apps that you can use for a safe, rich, and memorable journey. It’s just a matter of picking the best ones for you, depending on your travel style and habits. These are the twelve that we use many often.

1. SkyScanner (Flight Search)

Most people have this idea that travel blogging is insanely expensive. It can be quite costly at times, but it’s not as costly as people think. based on experience, the bulk of the expense is the one you spend even before the trip begins – airfare. That’s why flight search-and-compare apps are a substantial help for us. Our favorite is SkyScanner, which rummages through millions of flights to give you the most convenient route.

2. Facebook (Social)

A substantial chunk of our follower base is on Facebook. through the Facebook app (and Pages app), we get to update and interact with them on a regular basis. It has also become our link to everyone back home (something very essential to us) and our primary source of news as we also follow media outfits to keep up to date!

The Ruins of St. Paul’s by night
3. Instagram (Social/Photography)

We love taking our readers and followers with us wherever we go, albeit virtually. and Instagram is the best tool for that. Internet users have been increasingly visual and impatient, and we use snapshots of our travels to keep them interested and engaged. This makes your device choice vital, too. If you’re still searching for one, take a look at the video camera features.

For example, Huawei’s GR3 smartphone is equipped with a 13MP rear video camera and a 10-level auto-face enhancement mode. during moments when you don’t want to bring your bulky DSLR with you, its 7cm micro view with photosensitive area reach of 1/3.06 has you covered. and just like many people, we love selfies too! Its 5MP front video camera and audio video camera (which can activate photos using only your voice) take away the wrist-bending awkwardness when taking selfies.

Luang Prabang
4. Snapchat (Social/Video)

The past couple of years have shown that video is an extremely essential medium in engaging with other people. Snapchat allows us to offer a longer and closer real-time peeks of the places we visit, food we enjoy, and adventures we take. and for some reason, it does feel very personal, which our followers appreciate.

5. Google Maps (Navigation)

I like getting lost every once in a while, but there are instances when it simply isn’t practical, like trying to catch a flight or train, or you have very little time to explore. While I am starting to fall in love with CityMapper, its limited scope implies I cannot use it in destinations outside popular cities like London or Tokyo. Google Maps remains, for me, the most extensive and useful. From public transportation routes to walking trails, it enables me to reach destinations worry-free.

Wat Arun in Bangkok.
6. Waze (Navigation)

But when I’m the one driving, Waze is my best friend. Its social, crowdsourcing features keep this app incredibly reputable especially when it concerns traffic warnings and alternative route suggestions.

7. Uber (Ride-Sharing)

The many common traveler scams around the world involve taxi drivers: meter tampering, overcharging, money switching. Ride-sharing apps offer a terrific alternative. I have tried it in major cities and they really are safe, fast, and reliable. There are a number of options out there. Uber and Lyft are the most popular, but you can try and compareothers too.

8. Converter (Utility)

One thing that I never get used to about travel is converting currencies and units of measurement – I hate numbers! There are hundreds of converter apps available so it’s just a matter of taste, but my favorite is GlobeConvert. It converts practically everything: centimeters to inches, kilos to pounds, Celsius to Fahrenheit. Currencies are included, too, and rates are updated daily.

The South gate of Angkor Thom
9. Google Translator (Utility)

Have you ever stumbled upon a signage bearing foreign characters that looks essential but you just don’t understand? Or have you ever dined at a restaurant with no English menu? happens to me all the time when I’m in Japan and China. but Google translate eliminates the problem. I just take a photo of it and the app detects and translates it automatically. You can also type English words and it will translate it to any of the dozens of languages available, so you can easily tell the cab chauffeur where you’re going or the waiter what you’re ordering.

10. Splittr (Utility)

As you know, this blog is owned and maintained by two travelers. and although we choose traveling alone, we also delight in traveling together. That’s when things get messy and confusing. We don’t split costs on the spot. It’s much more like, “I pay for the tour; you pay for lunch. Let’s sort it out later.” but the problem is, all it takes is five minutes and we have completely forgotten about everything. Splittr was created exactly for our type of travelers. You just have to input the numbers and the app will do the math. You can even export data as a PDF file.

11. TripAdvisor (Reviews/Utility)

Nothing beats user reviews when it concerns finding establishments to take your company to. Whether it’s hotels, restaurants, attractions, or tours, TripAdvisor offers testimonials from actual customers, assisting me in making an informed decision. photos also help manage our expectations. Sure, there have been surprises – high-rated but [turned out to be] rubbish, low-rated but pretty good – but it reflects reality in many cases.

The sunset blowing away the blues at the Mekong River
12. GoSkyWatch (Astronomy)

One of my favorite things to do when in a foreign land is camping. I just love being intimate with nature and being away from all the urban chaos. stars are much brighter when there’s no light pollution to block them, making stargazing an activity that I always look forward to. GoSkyWatch is an app that searches, identifies, and discusses stars, planets, constellations, and other celestial objects. It’s much much more entertaining when you know what you’re looking at.

9 summer READS TO SATIATE YOUR WANDERLUST

Posted: 07/06/15 | July 7th, 2015

At the start of the new Year, I vowed to read one book a week, and I’m happy to say I’m accomplishing that goal. I even started a book club to keep me focused (I mean, you can’t recommend books if you don’t read them, right?).

Thanks to my grandmother, I’ve always been addicted to reading (Sadly, not everyone is: 28% of people haven’t read a book in the last year!!). I feel like I might be the only person who read the unabridged version of Les Miserables when he was thirteen! After years of sporadic reading, digesting so numerous books this year has nourished my long book-starved soul.

And, with the summer travel season in full swing, I wanted to share my recent favorite reads. A good book makes long flights go by quicker.

1. A Year in Provence, by Peter Mayle

I’d heard of this book before but never bothered to pick it up until multiple readers recommended it to me. I’m delighted I finally read it — it was incredible. An autobiographical novel following the author Peter Mayle’s year living in Provence, it details the struggles and joys of adapting to a new culture. I loved the interesting characters he meets and his description of the slow pace of life in France (which was a clear departure from his previous life in England). As a Francophile, this book makes me want to relocation to France even more. wonderfully and wistfully written, I can understand why it continues to be such a classic. purchase on Amazon | purchase on Bookshop

2. The Art of Travel, by Alain De Botton

Another reader recommendation, this book looks at the why of travel. What compels us to see the world? From the anticipation of a trip, the act of getting there, being there, and the return, Alain De Botton talks about it all. though dry in parts, this is one of the best written and many thoughtful travel books I’ve read in a really long time. The author’s use of language and imagery is extremely sophisticated, and his discussions of beauty, travel, and the mundane are equally thought-provoking. purchase on Amazon | purchase on Bookshop

3. eating Viet Nam: Dispatches from a Blue Plastic Table, by Graham Holliday

While I don’t love Vietnam (I didn’t have a good experience there), I do love Vietnamese food… a lot! This is an awesome book about the history and culture behind the country’s street cuisine. author Graham Holliday has lived in Vietnam a long time, and he sure knows his food. In this engrossing and hunger-inducing book, you’ll wander with him through the backstreets of Vietnam, learning about the street food you see all over the country and, in doing so, begin to understand the country and its people. purchase on Amazon | purchase on Bookshop

4. visit Sunny Chernobyl, by Andrew Blackwell

What’s it like to visit the most polluted places on the planet? inspired by a trip to Kanpur, India (considered one of the most polluted towns in the country), Andrew Blackwell set off to visit oil towns, coal mines, the Pacific garbage patch, and, of course, Chernobyl. In numerous ways, I found this to be the anti-travel book. It didn’t inspire me to go anywhere, but it did pique my intellectual curiosity about the places that remain hidden from everyday view. Blackwell’s conversational writing style, self-deprecating jokes, and sarcasm make this book an easy and fun read. purchase on Amazon | purchase on Bookshop

5. travels with Charley in search of America, by John Steinbeck

John Steinbeck’s well-known travel book… that he many likely made up! now typically believed that Steinbeck fictionalized many of the adventures in his book, the writing is so pleasurable that it’s still a worthwhile read. set in 1960, it tells of Steinbeck’s travels across the us with his canine Charley as they meet colorful, folksy characters along the way. This book is about that cool road trip we all want to take and the people we wish to meet. While embellished, it’s a fun read. purchase on Amazon | purchase on Bookshop

6. The kindness of Strangers, by Mike McIntyre

Mike McIntyre set off to travel across America with nothing except the clothes on his back. His goal? To get from San Francisco to Cape worry with no money, relying solely on the kindness of strangers. Along the way he encountered all kinds of people who shattered the cynical journalist inside him. having hitchhiked in numerous countries and been in situations where I needed help from strangers, I found this book a good pointer that people the world over are typically good, kind souls.
Buy on Amazon | purchase on Bookshop

And, in case you want some non-travel books, these were good too:

7. Titan: The Life of John D. Rockefeller, Sr. — This biography of John D. Rockefeller by Ron Chernow is long and dense, but it gives you a fantastic insight into the richest man to ever live and how standard Oil and his subsequent philanthropy changed the world.

8. The 7 practices of highly effective people — Aclassic book by Stephen Covey on how to organize your time and priorities to lead a better, much more thoughtful life. I can’t recommend this book enough.

9. empire of Cotton: A global history — Sven Beckert’s interesting and comprehensive look at the history of cotton and how it shaped the world.

So there you have it! nine books to keep you well-read and inspired this summer! I’ll do a post like this every so often, as I think books are fantastic source of wanderlust (and personal growth).

much has been stated about Bangkok being so touristy. however that’s a given. Self-proclaimed traveling elites may wince at you going to the typical traveler areas however go anyway. There just may be a reason they are on everyone’s maps as well as guidebooks.

The finest thing about the Grand palace as well as the fantastic temples of Bangkok is that they stand close to every other. They are likewise quickly available through the Chao Phraya reveal Boat, which is likewise linked to the BTS (Skytrain). Here’s a quick guide to assist you see six of the top traveler areas along the Chao Phraya. (I’m not stating this is the best, many extensive guide there is since it’s not. however this is exactly how I did it provided my restricted time as well as energy.)

Important Reminders

First, right here are some essential tips:

1. Make sure you have breakfast since this walk is going to be a long one.

2. gown appropriately. The Grand palace has a strict gown code. The temples have much more unwinded guidelines however let’s comply with the Grand Palace’s gown code for a smooth tour. The guideline is to have your shoulders, knees, as well as heels covered. The complying with are not allowed:

Shorts, short skirts, mini-skirts, tight fitting trousers,

Torn trousers/pants

Sando, vests, sleeveless shirts

See-through shirts

Sandals

3. be careful of scams! Even before the trip, I kept reading about the rampant scams that target unsuspecting tourists.  Coincidentally, when I was there, Bangkok was featured on Scam City, a national geographic show that exposes exactly how scammers operate in major cities in the world.

True enough, I was approached by these scammers twice. One at Wat Pho. They would introduce themselves as instructors as well as tell you that the temple is closed since that day is a holiday. They would then tell you of one more temple that is open as well as invite you to trip a tuktuk. Don’t choose them. decline politely as well as go inside inside regardless.

To begin the tour, make your method to Saphan Taksin station (S6) of the BTS Silom Line. Take exit 2, as well as hop onto a Chao Phraya reveal boat at the Sathorn Pier.

Bangkok Chinatown

Leng Buai Ia Shrine, the oldest Chinese shrine in Thailand (built 1658).
Alight at the Ratchawong Pier (N5) as well as make your method on foot from Ratchawong road to Sampeng Lane as well as Yaowarat Road. Chinatown is prominent for its shops, particularly near Charoenkrung Road. however there are likewise temples around the district. To be honest, if you’ve been to other Chinatowns in other parts of Southeast Asia, this may disappoint you, unless you go to during the Chinese new Year, when the district truly concerns life.

(If you’re after a tummy-friendly experience, it would be finest to go to after sunset.)

After costs an hour or two in Chinatown, head back to the river. You may trace your steps back to Ratchawong (N5) or go to Saphan Phut (N6) instead.

Wat Arun – The temple of Dawn

Get off at Tha Tien Pier (N8) as well as take a cross river boat to the other side. You will see Wat Arun from the pier.

Located on the west bank of Chao Phraya, Wat Arun Ratcha Wararam Ratchaworamahawihan is devoted to the second regime of the Chakkri Dynasty. understood to locals at Wat Chaeng or temple of Dawn, it is believed that King Taksin, after escaping Ayutthaya which was connected by the Burmese, reached the location just before sunrise. He then made the location the chief temple as well as when housed the valuable Emeral Buddha as well as the Phra Bang (another essential image) which were moved from the Lao city of Vientiane.

Statue of King Rama next to the prang of Wat Arun
A yaksha as well as the 70m spire of Wat Arun
Wat Arun is most likely the most recognizable landmark in Bangkok. the most captivating function of the wat is its 70m tall spire (called prang) that towers over the Yai district as well as the Chao Phraya River. even from the ferry, it is the very first marvelous sight if you’re coming from the Sapan Taksin BTS Station. Its elaborate design as well as its picturesque place make it one of the most postcard ideal views in the city. It is finest photographed at sunset when it is illuminated, a standout, shining structure at the heart of the city.

After checking outWat Arun’s spires, head back to Tha Thien pier.

Wat Pho – The temple of the Reclining Buddha

Tha Thien pier (where you’re standing at this point) is in an area called Rattanakosin Island, bordered by the Chao Phraya to the west. A moat stemming from the river flows around the area, an efficient defense in the olden days. The harbors a few of Bangkok’s many prominent wats (temples), shrines, as well as other crowd favorites including Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the emerald Buddha), Wat Mahathat, City Pillar Shrine, the Grand Palace, as well as Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha).

After returning to Tha Thien pier, comply with the method out (you can see it immediately) as well as you’ll discover a street flanked with vendors. just walk up the road as well as it will lead you to a temple at the corner. That’s Wat Pho.

The enormous reclining Buddha
Wat Pho is famed for the huge reclining Buddha that it shelters. The 15m high as well as 43m long picture rests inside a well-decorated hall. I was provided a little sack to put my shoes in as I was approaching the door. in spite of the huge crowd outside, I was delightfully amazed to see the hall practically empty. as well poor it lasted for only a minute as others flooded in immediately. While I was expecting the picture to be big, I was shocked to stand before a massive, huge figure. Its extremely elaborate feet alone are 3m tall as well as 4.5 m long. (Can you photo that?) The statue itself is covered as well as surrounded with Buddhist as well as Thai symbols.

The wat is house to over 1000 pictures of Buddha, 91 chedis (stupas), 4 viharas (halls), as well as a central shrine (bot). Guarding the site are stone walls with 16 gates, “manned” by statues of Chinese giants.

One hundred as well as eight bronze bowls are lined up against the wall in the area behind the statue, towards the exit. Once done, walk to the opposite direction to the entrance of the Grand Palace.

The Grand palace is vast. It is not a singular building however a complex of structures, pavilions, as well as courtyards. The temple of the emerald Buddha is one of the numerous quarters of the palace. other noteworthy sites inside are the Phra Maha Monthien Buildings, the Chakri Maha Prasat Buildings, as well as the Phra Maha Prasat Buildings. There are lots of indications so just comply with them.

Prasat Phra Thep Bidon (The royal Pantheon) was originally developed in 1855 to home the emerald Buddha however was later dropped since it was as well little for such an honor.
Images of garuda (mythical bird-like creatures) wrap Phra Ubosot, the temple’s primary building. Each garuda holds a naga, a snake deity.
Phra Thinang Chakri Maha Prasat, the palace’s central court, combines conventional Thai with 19th century European architectures.
Since its building in 1782, it has been where the King of Thailand resides. However, King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX), the present king, stays at Chitralada Palace.

After you’ve had sufficient of the grandeur of the palace, time to relocation on as well as walk back to Tha Chang (N9) pier.

It is rather difficult to discover as well as the area can get congested particularly during rush hour, however when you reach the medical facility complex, just ask anybody who appears like they work or research study there. tell them you’re searching for the forensic museum as well as they’ll know.

The reception area of the museum
Also understood as the museum of Death, the Siriraj medical museum is a paradise for those into dark tourism. operated by Siriraj Hospital, the very first Western medical center in Thailand, it homes a big collection of artifacts gathered in the 120 years of the hospital’s existence as well as service as a pioneer in the medical field in the country. HOW TO pack A expert travel very first aid set

Last Updated: 4/12/2021 | April 12th, 2021

I get a great deal of concerns about health and wellness care on the road. considering that I’m not a doctor, I don’t like providing medical recommendations beyond a few general ideas so I’ve asked Mike Huxley, a registered nurse as well as author of the blog Bemused Backpacker to pen a few articles on health and wellness as well as security on the road. This is the very first in a series on the subject.

A very first aid set is an important piece of devices on any type of space year or round-the-world adventure, however a lot of travelers aren’t sure precisely what they requirement to take with them. So right here is an professional guide on exactly how to pack a very first aid set as well as what to include in it.

I have been traveling the world for nearly fifteen years now, as well as in all that time I have patched up a lot more travelers’ scrapes as well as sprains than I can remember.

Thankfully quite much all of the occurrences I have dealt with so far have been minor. even during my time spent volunteering as an expedition medic in the Sahara, the jungles of Kalimantan as well as Borneo, as well as lots of other outstanding places, I have been able to offer with a lot of mishaps as well as injuries that have crossed my path.

I have only been able to do all of this, however, since I have always packed my reliable very first aid kit. It has progressed as well as been fine-tuned over the years, however I have always brought one.

As any type of experienced traveler or health and wellness expert will tell you, things can as well as sometimes do go wrong on any type of trip, as well as taking a well-stocked set with you is always advised.

When I very first started traveling, I did what a lot of practical people do as well as brought a commercially offered emergency very first aid kit.

However, over the years, with a great deal of experience as well as my nursing qualification behind me, I have fine-tuned my own set to show what I will utilize out on the road as well as what I understand what will produce a much much better very first aid set for the typical traveler too.

The finest very first aid kits are basic however different as well as will have a range of dressings as well as devices to offer with the absolute basics. a lot more importantly, they can be utilized with bit or no training. So what products must you include? right here are my picks for the essentials.

1. Plasters (Bandages)
It goes without stating that these are an absolute important in any type of very first aid kit. the most typical type of minor injury is a cut or a graze, so it is always a great concept to bring a handful of plasters in a range of sizes.

If you believe you will be doing a great deal of trekking on your travels as well as you aren’t utilized to that type of exercise, then some blister plasters are a great idea.

It isn’t needed to overdo it as well as bring so lots of you might begin your own small field hospital; just a few of each type will do, as you can always restock when you pass a pharmacy.

EVERYTHING IS F*CKED: REFLECTIONS ON hope as well as travel WITH mark MANSON

Posted: 05/14/19 | may 14th, 2019

You satisfy a great deal of fascinating as well as wise people when you run an on the internet business as well as travel the world. one of the people I’ve satisfied is very popular author mark Manson. We had orbited each other for many years as well as lastly satisfied when he transferred to new York City.

We’ve been “real life” good friends ever since.

His very first book, The subtle Art of Not providing a F*ck, ended up being a runaway hit, selling over 8 million copies. (He composed a publish about exactly how travel made him the person is today, which laid the foundation for that book.)

Now, mark has a new book out today called, whatever is F*cked: A book about Hope. I got a copy to checked out in advance as well as it’s a truly incredible book about philosophy as well as exactly how to online a life of meaning as well as difficulty in our contemporary times. It provided me some great food for believed about problems or perspectives I hadn’t believed about before.

Today, mark as well as I chat about his new book!

Nomadic Matt: You have a new book out, whatever is F*cked: A book about Hope. Let’s talk about it. What would you state the core of this book is about?
Mark Manson: At its heart, this book is a look at exactly how to establish as well as preserve a sense of hope for ourselves as well as the world — as well as exactly how these really hopes impact us. We generally see hope as an unquestionably “good” thing, however I phone call that concept into concern in this book.

Would it be a thought about comply with as much as The subtle Art?
I’ve been calling it an “expansion” of the concepts from subtle Art. I believe it’s a deeper analysis as well as more complex application of the exact same concepts—values, pain/suffering, as well as our definitions of success. It’s type of like the calculus to subtle Art’s algebra or the chess to its checkers.

What influenced you to compose this book?
Well, just looking around at what is going on in the world. We’re living in a weird time in that materially, the world, as a whole, is the very best it’s ever been (less poverty, violence, more wealth, people living longer, etc.), yet psychologically as well as emotionally, people are having a hard time more than ever with discovering hope as well as meaning in their lives.

And what’s fascinating is that it’s the people from the wealthiest as well as most steady parts of the world who are experiencing these philosophical struggles the most.

On top of that, I’ve noticed in my own life, that as an older millennial, all the promises of my youth have turned out quite ugly. From the Web to my country as well as to my assumptions about relationships, friendships, community, it feels like there’s a great deal to be justifiably upset about — yet things are objectively better.

I’ve had my own struggles with discovering meaning as well as hope in my own life, in spite of the truth that, on paper, whatever is awesome. So, in that way, this book is type of my own method to kind with these issues.

Since this is a travel website, let’s talk about your book as well as travel. exactly how can travel make us less f*cked? Or can it?
I believe anything that boosts human empathy is extremely important as well as helpful at the moment. I likewise believe anything that can cause you to face your own value systems as well as concern them is incredibly useful.

Travel does both of those things extremely well.

It’s a bit ironic that by linking the world more than ever before, we’ve likewise come to objectify cultures more than ever before. whatever is about “the ‘Gram” so to speak. I believe a extremely mindful as well as culturally engaged type of travel is still paramount.

Like anything, travel can ended up being an getaway from one’s issues rather than a quest of some higher understanding. So, it’s important to always make sure you’re on the right side of that equation.

One element of the book I discovered truly fascinating was the formula forever as well as exactly how it associates with being a much better person (especially in relation to travel). Can you explain this concept a bit bit?
The formula of Humanity comes from the philosopher Emmanuel Kant as well as essentially states that the driving force behind all of our decisions as well as actions should always be people. That more than emotions, more than culture, more than group loyalties, our very first principle should always be to treat people (both ourselves as well as others) with dignity as well as respect.

And I believe travel forces one to method this.

It’s simple to sit on one side of the world as well as criticize people on the other. however when you go there as well as find that 99% of the people are good, decent people as well as really value the exact same things you do, it makes empathy more possible.

What can peoplediscover from your book that they can apply to their lives?
I believe there are five points that people can truly apply to their own life:

Why self-discipline needs comprehending your own emotions.

Why trauma as well as loss cause emotional dysfunction as well as exactly how we can overcome that dysfunction.

How every belief system is eventually a bit bit religious as well as we requirement to be cautious about that.

How to be more resilient.

How to be freer in a world of constant distraction as well as diversion.

You talk a great deal about exactly how our feelings brain being in manage as well as that we online in a feelings economy, where emotions run rampant. Can travel solidify that in any type of way? Can travel show us exactly how not to be keyboard warriors?
Unfortunately, there’s no method to NOT be irrational as well as emotional, as much as we’d sometimes like to. The key is to not withstand or attempt to modification our emotions however just work with them, rather than against them. things like anger, stress and anxiety or even despair can be extremely useful if channeled properly. The key is to establish the skill-set to channel them.

I believe like a great deal of things, travel amplifies who you already are. If you’re selfish as well as intolerant, then your travel experiences will show that. If you’re magnanimous or curious, then they will show that. A method that travel can be useful is that it is a tool to force you to work on elements of yourself that you wouldn’t otherwise be able to work on.

Do you struggle with being alone or caring as well much about what others think? travel alone.

Used to being pampered as well as upset over every bit thing? Go take a train with the Indian countryside. That’ll straighten you out genuine quick!

You mention a great deal of philosophers in your book (which I enjoyed since I got a great deal of book suggestions). What are some great books to checked out around this topic?
It’s interesting since I feel like philosophy is ending up being great in our culture. It makes sense since as all of our fundamental needs are taken care of, these concerns of existential meaning, purpose, as well as what to hope are more at the forefront of our minds, as well as those are all philosophical questions.

If you’re a total newbie to philosophy as well as want to get a fundamental comprehending of the Western canon, I suggest a book called Sophie’s world by Jostein Gaarder. It’s a fun fiction book that acts as type of a primer to the most important western thinkers.

If you’re into eastern philosophy, DT Suzuki’s books are a nice introduction to Zen Buddhism. The Tao Te Ching is extremely readable as well as thought-provoking. as well as Alan Watts’ books are indispensable.

And if you want to see exactly how applications of ancient philosophy are incredibly useful in today’s world. inspect out Jonathan Haidt’s The happiness hypothesis or Ryan Holiday’s The challenge is the Way.

You talk about exactly how we requirement pain to grow and, I think, part of experiencing pain is getting out of your comfort zone. What can travel teach us about pain as well as growth?
Painful travel is the very best kind. It’s like going to the fitness center for your mind as well as your comprehending of humanity. My very first trips to India as well as Africa were two of my most difficult as well as uncomfortable trips as well as today I believe back to them fondly since they were incredibly formative to my comprehending of the world.

India was shocking since of the quantity of beauty as well as human suffering squished into such confined spaces. You might see one of the most lovely things in your life as well as one of the most horrific things in your life, all within a few blocks of each other.

Africa was eye-opening since when you truly get out in the bush, you get a genuine sense of exactly how bit humans requirement to be happy. It’s cliché to state that money as well as possessions don’t make you happy, however when you see with your own eyes people who are feeling just fine having nothing more than a goat as well as a robe, it’s rather profound.

China was most likely the most alienating location I’ve ever been. I’ve never felt so foreign in my life. It’s the only location I’ve been where I’ve truly gotten the sense that I did not matter, at all. as well as just having to sit as well as online keeping that feeling for the two weeks I was there was rather impactful.

I believe it’s simple to fail to remember exactly how durable the human spirit is, exactly how many locations it can flourish, as well as exactly how quickly it can be happy. The very first time you see a kid crap on the side of the street, it suddenly grants a great deal of point of view the next time you grumble about poor Wi-Fi.

Ultimately, I suggest that a growing problem in the world today is that we aren’t challenged sufficient as well as that we don’t have meaningful struggles, so we have to invent meaningless ones to take their location as well as preserve a sense of hope.

Travel is a method to constantly difficulty yourself. Whether it’s traveling to a bad country or forcing yourself to research study a language or physically testing yourself with hikes as well as biking across continents. It’s indispensable.

Finally, in your own words, why should people buy this book?
Because it’s fucking awesome! And, just like my last book, I use stories as well as examples from around the world as well as from a number of different cultures to make my point.

There’s a soldier from Poland as well as a monk from Vietnam as well as historical fiction about Isaac Newton as well as a vignette about Friedrich Nietzsche as well as his over-sized mustache. What’s not to love?

(Matt says: as well as it truly is excellent like he says! pick up a copy, particularly if you enjoyed his last one!)

Mark Manson is a blogger, entrepreneur, as well as the very popular author of The subtle Art of Not providing a F*ck, which has offered over 8 million copies worldwide. He focuses on composing personal advancement advice that doesn’t suck. His website MarkManson.net is checked out by over 2 million people each month.

His new book, whatever is F*cked: A book about hope is now available. He lives in new York City.

HOW TO get PAID WHEN YOUR flight IS delayed

Posted: 3/27/21 | March 27th, 2021

Things don’t always go as planned on the road. lost luggage, delayed flights, travel scams — there are tons of things that can derail your trip.

While serendipity, mishaps, and surprises are part of the allure of travel, the one mishap no one likes is a delayed flight.

There’s no fun in missed connections and long delays, especially after little sleep and long travel days.

As someone who flies regularly, I’ve experienced pretty much every hiccup there is. Delays, cancelations, lost or delayed luggage, overbooked flights — the list goes on.

While I always get travel insurance before I go abroad, there is actually a company out there designed specifically to help travelers safe compensation when flight delays and cancelations strike.

It’s called Airhelp.

Since its founding in 2013, AirHelp has helped over 16 million people get compensation for delays and canceled flights arriving in or departing from the European Union.

I used them in 2019 when I was on my way to Paris. My connecting flight was delayed over eight hours and, thanks to EU rules, I was entitled to get compensation from the airline.

The problem was that I didn’t really want to chase tap Air Portugal for months on end. people said that they drag the process out in hopes you’ll give up (which lots of do). As someone who was only in Europe for a short time, I realized the last thing I wanted was to spend my little time in living in Paris on the phone with TAP. I indicate who wants that kind of stress in the land of wine and cheese?

So I decided to use AirHelp.

In the end, it took about five months before I was refunded my money. but it was refunded and all I had to do was fill out a small form. AirHelp took a considerable percentage, but I got everything the EU said I was legally entitled to receive.

So, if you’re traveling to/from Europe on a European carrier and there’s a mishap and you’re wondering what to do, here’s an overview of how AirHelp can help you get compensated for delayed and canceled flights:

What Does AirHelp Cover?

The EU has strong consumer protection laws, which means that if you have a flight arriving in or departing from the European Union and it is delayed or canceled, or if you experience certain other circumstances, you may be entitled to compensation, which ranges from $300 to $700 USD, depending on the severity of the delay.

Note: If your flight does not originate or arrive in the EU, or if the carrier is not headquartered in the EU, you’ll be unable to apply for compensation.

Here’s a quick overview of what is covered by AirHelp:

Delays of over three hours where the airline is at fault (i.e., no weather delays)

Flights canceled with 14 days of departure and no suitable alternative is offered

Overbooked flights

Missed connections due to delay, cancelation, or overbooking

Lost or damaged luggage

For an in-depth look at AirHelp’s coverage policies, check out its in-depth guidelines.

How Do I submit a Claim?

To make a claim, simply visit AirHelp.com and follow the prompts, with your flight details and boarding pass at hand. It takes two minutes and is super easy. The site will tell you ideal away if you have a claim.

You can apply for compensation for delayed flights up to three years after the date, which means if you’ve had a flight to or from the EU with a three-hour delay (or more) sometime in the past three years, then you can still make a claim for compensation.

Does AirHelp cost Money?

Making a claim is free. You only pay AirHelp if it wins your compensation claim. It will take 35% of the compensation, however (50% if they have to go to court).

While that is a substantial percentage, remember, you only have to do two minutes of work. Not a bad trade if it wins you a couple of hundred bucks!

Does AirHelp work for Flights in the US?

In the us government’s own words, “There are no federal laws requiring airlines to supply passengers with money or other compensation when their flights are delayed.”

In order to apply for compensation via AirHelp, your flight need to take off from the EU or land in the EU — and be flown by an airline with headquarters in the EU.

Unfortunately, if you’re flying a us airline, you won’t be entitled to compensation unless that airline has its own policy stating otherwise.

How Do the compensation rules work in the EU?

EU guideline EC 261 is the main protective piece of legislation that protects passenger rights in Europe. It’s the driving force behind your ability to make a claim.

Under EC 261, you are entitled to file a delayed flight claim for $700 (600 EUR) if:

You arrived at your destination a lot more than three hours late.

The flight took off in the EU (from any airline) or landed in the EU (provided that the airline is headquartered in the EU).?

You checked in for your flight on time.

Your flight operated no a lot more than three years ago.?

The airline is responsible for the delay (operational circumstances, technical difficulties, etc.).?

It doesn’t matter whether the airline has already provided you with food or travel vouchers — they will still owe you compensation. As long as you meet the above requirements (even if you’re not an EU citizen or citizen) you’ll be covered and eligible to make a claim.

Why Not just Do It Myself?

You can absolutely chase down an airline for compensation if you have time. Some airlines make it relatively easy while others will make you jump through hoops. If you have the time and patience, you can do it yourself and keep 100% of your compensation.

I didn’t want to do it myself. Time is money!

And I certainly don’t need a lot more stress in my life.

AirHelp’s fee is pretty big but 35% to not have to deal with this was worth it to me.

You’ll save a ton of time and increase your chances of getting compensation by using AirHelp. It has a proven track record and knows how to get your money as swiftly and conveniently as possible.

The next time your flight is canceled or delayed, don’t just clear up for a voucher. Take two minutes and run a claim through AirHelp. A few hundred bucks in your pocket is better than nothing, especially when you could be spending that money on your next trip!

Note: This isn’t a paid advertisement. AirHelp did not supply me any compensation to write this. This is just a review of the service as lots of readers keep asking me about my experience using them.
