LUMIANG BURIAL CAVE in Sagada, Philippines

Coffins frighten the hell out of me. I said it before and I’m saying it now — The poor Traveler is not the take on Traveler. There are so lots of things out there that terrify me. one of them is death. and a lot of of the things related to it. The mere sight of a coffin is enough to make me shiver. think of how I felt when I learned I’d be in a cave full of coffins!

“No way. Not gonna happen,” I resisted.

An hour later, I found myself in a cave, surrounded by coffins. The concern of coffins was overshadowed by the concern of not getting to experience the trip in full so I walked down to the cave, along a steep and rugged trail, with my pals to face the most coffins at a single place I had ever seen.

And it wasn’t scary.

Coffins stacked one after another, creating an entire wall of sealed proof of how much our ancestors valued the afterlife, did not activate concern but curiosity. The place uses a quick but rich look of the past — traditions, culture, life.

The Lumiang Burial Cave is probably the most checked out burial site in Sagada mostly because it is normally bundled with the Sumaguing Cave Tour. Sumaguing Cave is arguably the town’s a lot of popular vacationer attraction and those who avail of the excursion are given a complimentary side trip to the Lumiang Cave. It is also the start point for the Cave Connection, the a lot more challenging of the spelunking options you may choose from.

The cave is hidden several meters away from the road and one needs to go down a steep — and if you’re unlucky and it’s raining —  slippery trail. There are parts that are very tough to traverse but nowhere near dangerous. You just need to keep your balance by using your arms as your third and fourth legs. Some parts are rocky that you might want to enjoy your step, while some were littered with soft sticks that make music when stepped on.

Although a challenge, especially for asthmatic tourists like me, the trail uses a good view of the limestone cliffs along the way. There’s even a spot for picture-taking!

My pals at a photo stop. Haha
When we reached the site, we were greeted by a number of small groups of tourists, all posing against the piles of coffins. While some settled for just checking out the coffins from afar, others went deeper into the area to get a closer look at the priceless content of the cave. On one end were those about to start their Cave connection spelunking adventure.

A good fifteen minutes had passed and everyone in our group agreed it was time to come back up to the road. minutes before, we were all talking about how tough it was to go down to the cave. Apparently, the going down was relatively easy if you ask me. It was the coming back up that left me gasping for and vomiting air.

I wouldn’t say my concern of coffins had been completely removed by this experience. However, this close encounter with the vessels of the departed brought me closer to the realization that death and all things that we associate with it are all reflections of the culture we take part in.

AND THEN, I transferred to STOCKHOLM…

Posted: 07/09/2012 | July 9th, 2012

I’ve been getting ready for it so long now that it doesn’t seem like it’s truly happening, however today is the day I step to Sweden. As you checked out this (as long as you checked out this on Monday), I’m boarding a flight to Stockholm, where I’ll spend the rest of the year.

Everyone keeps asking me if I’m anxious or ecstatic or afraid to be moving there, however to be honest, today I don’t truly feel anything. It seems like a typical day — like I’m just off to one more destination. You’d believe a huge life modification such as this would elicit bigger emotions from me, however I’ve been so hectic over the last few months that I haven’t had time to truly believe about it. I was completing my book, going to four conferences (speaking at two of them!), crossing the Pacific a few times, as well as trying to online life. It was why I was so burnt out. I overextended myself, as well as as such Stockholm has been on the back burner of my mind.

But as I lastly begin to believe about my move, all I can believe about are all the things I have to do as well as exactly how stressed I am about getting them done. On my instant list:

Find an apartment

Finish sorting out my visa

Sign up for regular Swedish classes

Find a gym

Figure out exactly how to hold my good friends in August

Make great deals of friends

Find time to check out other parts of Sweden

Explore every inch of Stockholm

How am I going to cram all of that into five months as well as still discover time to get out of the country when in a while as well as travel?!

Stressful.

Well, at least in my head.

I’ve never truly organized a huge step before. a lot of of my moves have kind of just occurred naturally since I made a decision to stay somewhere longer. I mean, is this exactly how it usually goes when you step somewhere? Is your preliminary enjoyment masked by the weight of all of your plans as well as things you believe you have to do?

I have no concept if I’m going to like living in Stockholm. I like Stockholm, it’s one of my preferred cities in the world, however will I be able to cope with the truth that I’m in ONE location for so long? What will this nomad do? It’s been years considering that I’ve stayed in a single location for a lot more than a month, as well as even little trips may not be sufficient to get me by. If travel is breaking out of your comfort zone as well as trying new things, not traveling is my traveling.

On the flip side, all those things that are stressing me out are the exact same reasons why I’m ecstatic to online in Stockholm. It’s kind of ironic. I can’t wait to discover Swedish, get up into Sweden’s arctic north, have a base of operations, take weekend trips around Europe, have a gym, as well as clear up down.

I’m truly ecstatic to step to Sweden, however ideal now, my enjoyment is a bit tempered by all the things on my to-do list, even if those are the extremely things drawing me there in the very first place. In a few weeks, when I’m all settled down, I’ll most likely feel like shouting, “Holy crap, I’m living in Sweden!!!” as well as begin jumping up as well as down, however ideal now, I’m looking ahead to landing, hitting the ground running, as well as settling into my new…home.

HOW TO conquer BEING ALONE WHEN YOU travel

Updated: 11/23/19 | November 23rd, 2019

Before I very first went traveling in 2006, I had these expectations in my head — based on nothing however my creativity as well as prominent culture.

My trip was going to be a nonstop experience full of vibrant as well as interesting people. crazy things were going to occur to me. I’d make buddies everywhere. I’d be speaking to strangers on buses. Locals would invite me out for drinks. I’d be sipping a latte, strike up a conversation with my gorgeous waitress, as well as then the next thing I’d understand we’d be at a red wine bar, staring into each other’s eyes while she taught me French.

It was going to be just like those articles I’d checked out or travel films I saw. One adventurous scene after the next.

Then I went overseas.

There I was in the hostel, on the road, seeing incredible attractions in historic cities all by myself. I might do whatever I desired when I wanted. I was beating to the noise of my own drum.

At first, it was interesting as I set my everyday routine as well as did things by myself.

But, as the days used on as well as my tongue failed to remember what speech sounded like, that enjoyment dissipated as I began to crave human interaction as well as companionship.

Suddenly, I was alone — as well as in the poor way.

I was lonely.

I was so hectic those very first couple of days that I failed to remember I was alone. as well as that was fine — up until it wasn’t. Where were the locals who were expected to show me around? The awesome travelers I’d spend nights out with? when I ran out of things to do, I might no longer hide my aloneness.

I began to recognize the only reason I was alone was since of fear.

As a huge introvert, it isn’t natural for me to just walk as much as strangers as well as speak with them. It makes me anxious as well as that was particularly true method back in 2006 when I had very first started traveling.

But that worry was keeping me from living the dreams I had in my head. If I desired them to happen, I was going to have to make them happen.

A great deal of people question if traveling alone implies they will always be alone. exactly how will they make friends? Is it hard?

It’s a valid issue and, for us non-natural socialites, it’s a challenge. however let me tell you: it’s a great deal simpler than you think.

There are a great deal of people traveling solo.

People just like you.

People searching for an adventure.

People who crave interactions with others.

And that other is you.

I overcame being alone when people in my hostel started speaking to me. They were the very first ones to reach out. They broke the barrier I was as well scared to break myself. I was in a hostel in Prague sitting there waiting on “something to happen.”

But things seldom occur unless you make them happen. You requirement to go out as well as speak with strangers.

It took the introvert in me a while to discover that truth, however when I did, I had no difficulty satisfying people. After those travelers stated hi as well as showed me exactly how simple it was, I realized I was making a mountain out of a molehill. There was nothing to be frightened of.

Because all of us begin off in the exact same boat: in a foreign country without any type of friends, not speaking the language, as well as searching for people to spend time with. when you recognize that, you recognize exactly how easy as well as simple it is to make buddies — since everybody is just like you.

The essential is to begin little as well as break out of your shell. speak with the person in your dorm room. state hello. Ask them about themselves. They will respond. They’ll ask you about yourself. It will be fine as well as not scary.

Do the exact same to other travelers you see. look for that group leaving for the bar as well as ask, “Can I join you?” walk over to that pool table in the hostel as well as ask, “Who’s next?” assumption what? You are!

And thanks to the growing sharing economy, there are numerous methods to satisfy people. I’m sure you have one thing you are passionate about, right? Well, people around the world have that exact same passion. utilize a site like Meetup.com to discover regional groups that type around that passion. It’s a fantastic method to break the ice as you have an immediate thing to talk about, something you can speak fluently as well as excitedly on. It produces an immediate connection.

Moreover, you can try the site Couchsurfing. It’s not only a location to discover accommodation; they likewise have tons of meet-ups you can go to to discover other travelers as well as like-minded people.

At first, I discovered it difficult to speak to others, however you either sink or swim on the road. My choices were to be alone or to get over my fear, take the plunge, as well as speak with people. I select the latter.

And on the events I was sinking instead of swimming, other travelerscame as much as me as well as stated hello. They made the very first relocation so I didn’t have to.

Why? since they were wanting to make friends, too, as well as comprehended that if they didn’t do something either, they as well would have been alone.

Travelers are a friendly bunch. They want to satisfy new people as well as make new friends.

And one of those buddies is you.

You are never alone on the road. There are people all over who will be continuously speaking to you as well as inviting you out.

Traveling alone doesn’t imply you will be alone.

Take it from this introvert: you’ll satisfy much more people than you’ll understand what to do with.

And then you’ll recognize there was never a reason to concern in the very first place.

HOW TO turn HIGH-COST JAPAN into A affordable location TO see

Updated: 11/19/20 | November 19th, 2020

For years, I put off traveling to Japan since I was terrified of exactly how costly it would be. The rumors I’d heard about the country’s high costs made me hesitant to go. I’ve always liked Japanese culture, as well as I understood any type of see would include gorging on sushi as well as ramen, sees to great deals of temples, as well as heavy train travel with the countryside.

But the believed of exactly how much it would expense always made me think, “I’ll wait up until I have a lot more money.”

When I lastly checked out Japan years ago, I was shocked to find that, while it isn’t cheap, Japan isn’t the prohibitively costly country lots of people believe it is. In fact, I really discovered Japan to be extremely budget-friendly as well as on par with (and often more affordable than) countries in Western Europe.

In subsequent visits, I’ve discovered to additionally master the country as well as turn high-cost Japan into an budget-friendly location to visit.

Travel to Japan doesn’t requirement to expense a great deal of money. Here’s a in-depth breakdown of exactly how you can cut your costs to see Japan on a budget!

How to save on transportation in Japan

Trains
The bullet train, while awesome, comfortable, as well as fast, is not cheap. private tickets can expense numerous dollars. Yet I believe train travel is the very best method to see the country, so in buy to minimize your train costs, get a Japan Rail (JR) pass. The pass is vital for travel in Japan.

These passes expense 29,650 JPY ($282 USD) for 7 days, 47,250 JPY ($449 USD) for 14 days, as well as 60,450 JPY ($574 USD) for 21 days. All pass times are for consecutive travel.

Compare that to single tickets, where the three-hour journey from Osaka to Tokyo costs 10,500-15,500 JPY ($100-150 USD) each way. That single trip is nearly the exact same cost as the entire 7-day pass!

Moreover, these JR trains likewise serve regional city areas as well as so can be utilized intra-city. I utilized my pass to get around Kyoto as well as Tokyo instead of getting metro tickets. So, even if you aren’t going to do much travel around Japan, getting a pass is much better than getting private tickets. While the high cost of the pass can cause sticker shock, the alternate is even worse.

In the past, you might only buy the pass before you arrive. However, up until March 2021 you can purchase a Japan Rail Pass in Japan. Passes are offered in the complying with country locations: Sapporo, Sendai, Niigata, Tokyo, Shinjuku, Yokohama, Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima, Takamatsu, Hakata, new Chitose Airport, Narita Airport, Haneda Airport, as well as Kansai Airport.

Metro
Most of the city metro tickets expense 100–300 JPY for a single journey. The cost varies by distance as well as may commonly be higher In Tokyo, fares variety from 170-320 JPY as well as a 24-hour pass is 600 JPY ($5.75 USD). You can get a day pass in a lot of cities which provides you unrestricted travel for 24 hours for less than 800 JPY ($7.50 USD).

Buses
Buses are a less costly alternate to the bullet train system in Japan, however they take a lot more time. For example, the three-hour train trip from Tokyo to Osaka becomes a nine-hour bus ride. The cost for that seat is just 4,000 JPY ($38 USD), however at some point, you requirement to believe about exactly how much your time is worth. For me, saving some 10,000 JPY was not worth the additional seven hours of travel, considering that I had such restricted time during my visit. If I’d had a lot more time, I’d have just taken the bus.

There are likewise bus passes offered that offer unrestricted travel as well as begin at 10,200 JPY ($97 USD) for three non-consecutive days of travel.

Flights
There are lots of budget plan carriers now serving Japan — you can discover them on sites like Momondo or Skyscanner. Peach, Spring, Jetstar, as well as Skymark are a a few of the primary budget plan airlines available.

In general, their costs are on par with bullet train tickets. If you book well in advance, they may even be more affordable than the train. However, a lot more commonly than not that will be a bit a lot more costly as well as not truly any type of quicker if you’re going a short distance.

ANA likewise uses special last-minute fares by means of a hidden page on their website. It’s only offered to foreigners as well as can often be more affordable than the flights you discover on Skyscanner, particularly for longer routes around the country.

How to save on Food in Japan

Surprisingly, I discovered the food to be low-cost in Japan. True, my sushi addiction considerably boosted the expense of my trip but, overall, I discovered that I was costs far less on food than I’d anticipated.

As long as I didn’t feed my sushi addiction, I discovered I might eat for less than 1,500 JPY per day. Some normal costs were:

Sushi lunch sets (sushi, soup, salad): 1,600+ JPY

Traditional Japanese set lunches: 1,200+ JPY

Sushi trains: 125–625 JPY per meal

Small pasta: 400-500 JPY

Western set menu (sandwiches, burger, pizza, etc): 1,200-1,500 JPY

Fast food: 700 JPY

Ramen: 700-1,000 JPY

Tempura dishes: 100-150 JPY

There’s an variety of affordable food choices in the country so you don’t truly requirement to spend much money on food (unless you want to sprinkle out). You can save money on food in Japan by doing the following:

Eat at “100-yen” shops – There are lots of 100-yen shops (the Japanese equivalent to dollar stores) in Japan, where set meals, groceries, water, toiletries, home items, as well as a lot more are just 100 JPY. I did all my buying at these stores. Their names vary by region, so ask your hotel/hostel reception where the nearest 100-yen shop is located.

Use sushi trains – Sushi in Japan is tasty in any way levels. While I had a few fancy, sit-down meals, you can’t beat the sushi trains for value. At around 125 JPY ($1.20 USD) per plate, I might stuff my deal with for less than 1,500 JPY ($14.25 USD) a lot of of the time. I normally just ate at sushi trains.

Eat at 7-11 – 7-11, household Mart, as well as other comfort stores have a great deal of pre-set meals for under 500 JPY ($5 USD) that produce affordable lunches. Additionally, supermarkets have lots of set meals at similar prices. I observed this was a prominent choice for lots of Japanese people.

Cook your food – Hostels (as well as lots of Airbnb rental apartments) have kitchens, where you can cook as well as cut your food costs to less than 1,100 JPY ($10 USD) per day, particularly by buying at the 100-yen stores.

Avoid fresh fruit – The one rumor about Japan that [turned out to be] true was that fresh fruit as well as vegetables were expensive. outside of buying for an apple or banana at the market, I normally avoided fresh fruits as well as vegetables. They were as well expensive.

Eat curry, ramen, as well as donburi – I essentially lived off these three foods during my three weeks in Japan. Curry bowls are as affordable as 400 JPY ($3.75 USD) per plate. Donburi, bowls of meat as well as rice, are around 500 JPY ($4.75 USD). Ramen is never a lot more than 1,000 JPY ($9.50 USD). These are the very best methods to eat affordable as well as filling meals in Japan.

How to save on lodging in Japan

Living costs in Japan are exceptionally high because of the restricted space, high population, as well as rising housing prices. Unfortunately, those high costs transfer over into the tourism industry, making discovering affordable lodging a genuine pain.

Hostel dorms normally expense 2,500-4,000 JPY ($20-35 USD) per night as well as hotel spaces begin at 8,500 JPY ($75 USD) for a double space at a budget plan hotel.

Here are some methods to save on accommodation:

Work for your space – Hostels in Japan commonly let you stay for complimentary if you clean for a few hours a day. utilize a site like Worldpackers to discover chances before you arrive.

Couchsurfing – Hospitality exchanges are not as extensive in Japan as somewhere else in the world, however there is a small, active Couchsurfing neighborhood here. A great deal of expats take pleasure in holding since it lets them get back in touch with other westerners so don’t hesitate to reach out to them as well. just make sure you send a request ahead of time to boost your chances of success (especially in prominent cities like Kyoto as well as Tokyo). checked out a lot more about Couchsurfing here!

Use credit score card points – It’s times like these that travel hacking is available in handy. regular flier miles as well as routine hotel points can be redeemed for great deals of complimentary nights. I utilized my complimentary accumulated nights from hotels.com for two complimentary nights in Tokyo, however with the big sign-up bonuses ideal now for hotel cards, you can get as much as a week’s complimentary accommodation! Here’s a listing of my preferred travel credit score cards!

Capsule hotels – A step up from hostels as well as a step down from hotels, capsule hotels (pictured above) are small capsules you sleep in. You share bathrooms as well as typical areas, as well as your capsule has a light, outlet, as well as often a little television. They are often utilized by businessmen who work late. These capsules begin at around 3,000-5,500 JPY ($25-50 USD) per night.

Airbnb – Airbnb is a affordable option, however, because of a 2018 legislation there are a few caveats. First, only holds who have registered with the government can listing accommodation. Second, you’ll requirement to send a copy of your passport to your hold before showing up or let them copy your passport when you check-in. That said, it’s an budget-friendly option for any individual traveling as a group/family.

How to save on Attractions in Japan

Most of the attractions were extremely cheap. I didn’t spend a lot more than 500 JPY ($5 USD) permuseum or temple. In Kyoto, there’s a temple pass that provides you unrestricted transportation as well as gain access to to the temples for 1,300 JPY ($12.50 USD). It’s a great deal, thinking about you’re most likely going to see a great deal of museums in Kyoto. Osaka as well as Tokyo had similar passes for their attractions.

Overall, I discovered these passes to be the very best method to save money on temples, museums, as well as other attractions. Additionally, there are lots of complimentary gardens, temples, as well as parks! I barely spent any type of money on attractions while I was in Japan.

How much money Do You requirement to see Japan?

Japan has an picture of being one of the most costly countries in the world, as well as if you’re staying in hotels, eating out, as well as traveling around a lot, it can be. You can quickly spend over $200 USD each day by traveling that way. However, I don’t believe a trip to Japan needs to be that expensive.

Traveling around Japan can be budget-friendly if you understand what to do as well as keep an eye on your costs. You can save money in Japan by living like a local.

Staying in a hostel, getting a rail pass, eating fairly affordable food, as well as checking out a few attractions will expense around $100 USD per day.

For reference, a 21-day trip would expense at least $2,100 USD (plus your flight). For that much money, you can go to Southeast Asia for months!

However, by using the ideas above, I believe you can travel Japan for $80–85 USD per day. Japan shouldn’t expense you a lot more than that each day if you don’t splurge. This would indicate a lot more bus travel, a (very) restricted amount of sushi, only affordable restaurants, as well as the occasional night Couchsurfing (or other complimentary accommodation).

On a bare-bones budget, a trip to Japan will expense you $65-75 USD each day if you stay with Couchsurfing, affordable food, bus travel (trains would be far as well expensive), as well as only complimentary attractions. I saw great deals of travelers in Japan traveling on the cheap. They did it, as well as it’s possible — however you’ll never feed your sushi addiction if you travel this way.

***
To me, budget plan travel is value travel. Japan is never going to be as affordable a destination as Cambodia, Ukraine, or Peru, however there are methods to save money in every location in the world, as well as Japan has lots of methods to see on a budget. Japan will never expense $20 USD per day, however it likewise doesn’t requirement to expense hundreds.

Whenever people go to Japan as well as come back, they always state “It wasn’t as costly as I thought” since it doesn’t have to be! affordable Japan travel is possible as well as I hope this post taught you that! stay with the discount rate transit, regional food, as well as regional lodging as well as you’ll keep your costs low!

Enjoy!

Argentina’s Lake district – Our road trip to vacation home La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes

Argentina had amazed and pleased us at every turn. From the natural wonder of Perito Moreno Glacier and the fantastic hiking around El Chalén, to the desert landscapes of Salta and the vineyards of Mendoza, the diversity of Argentina was remarkable.

After spending a few days unwinding in Bariloche and getting our first taste of the Lake District, it was time to delve deeper into the region and explore the national Parks. There are numerous drives and routes you can do, but we opted to see the villages of vacation home La Angostura and San Martín de los Andes, as well as Lake Lolog.

Don’t miss our traveller suggestions and travel videos at the bottom of this post!

A great day for a drive around the Lake District
We packed up the rental car and set off on the well-known seven Lakes Route. You would think that there would be seven lakes (as the name suggests), but there are actually eight. I have no idea why it’s not called the eight Lakes Route?! This area provides 8 different lakes (Nahuel Huapi, Espejo, Correntoso, Escondido, Villarino, Falkner, Machónico and Lacar), plus 2 National Parks – Nahuel Huapi and Lanin.

The official seven Lakes route starts in vacation home La Angostura and runs 184 kilometers to San Martín de los Andes, with numerous people driving from Bariloche to San Martín de los Andes and back south to vacation home La Angostura in just one day. However, because we had our wheels for 4 much more days, we chose to take our time and really delight in this beautiful area.

Bariloche to vacation home La Angostura

The total drive from Bariloche to the town of vacation home La Angostura was only 84 kilometers, but after driving for just 20 minutes, we already wanted to pull over to take a photo! The sun was shining, the sky was blue and the view of Lake Nuhuel Huapi and Bariloche was too good to pass up.

After that photo, we had a few much more pockets of sunshine, but we essentially saw nothing but rain for the following 4 days, which didn’t stop us from enjoying the nature whatsoever.

Sunshine and a photo op on our way to vacation home La Angostura
We pulled in to the little town of vacation home La Angostura, passed by various shops selling fishing, hiking and camping gear, and continued through to just outside of the town where our hotel was located. Perched on a hill above the lakeshore, at the mouth of the river with the same name, was the beautiful Correntoso Lake and River Hotel. This would be our home for the next two nights.

There were a few clouds in the sky, but we were still able to see the views of the Andes Mountains from the window of our beautiful room. The natural setting of this Patagonian hotel was perfection. We were surrounded by Nuhuel Huapi Lake, Correntoso Lake, the fly-fishing mecca of the Correntoso River, and beautiful forest!

This is what the view from our balcony looked like on a sunny day – gorgeous!
Celebrating 100 years of company this year, Correntoso hotel is something of an institution in the area. In fact, before the roads were built, there used to be a boat shuttle service that would take passengers from Llao Llao just outside of Bariloche, across the Nuhuel Huapi Lake and arrive at the dock at Correntoso Hotel.

These days the hotel’s wooden dock is used mostly for anglers who travel here to try their luck at catching trout, grayling and browns, plus this is where the boat leaves for lake trips run by the hotel.

View of the hotel from our boat trip on the lake
Because the weather wasn’t really on our side, we had no choice but to drink red wine in the hotel’s bar area, dine on locally sourced meals and spend time at the hammam and spa! This hotel had the best heated pool I’ve ever seen. The air outside might have been cold and drizzly, but the pool was hot and a great place to relax.

With steam rising off the water and the nature surrounding us, the medspa was a very romantic place.

What to do when it’s raining? go to the medspa ?

We went for some beautiful drives, delighted in a nearby walk along the river, and a colourful sunset from the lakeshore. We also went on a quick boat trip of the Nuhuel Huapi Lake with the hotel.

If (when) we return to this area, we’ll certainly plan it for the summer months so we can experience all of the outdoor activities that the area has to offer – kayaking, boating, fishing, etc. Being here in the autumn was great in terms of there being no crowds, but the weather wasn’t the best.

Just next to Correntoso hotel is this little sunset spotVilla La Angostura to San Martín de los Andes

Continuing north on Routes 231 and 40, we passed by Espejo Grande Lake, Tratful Lake and the shores of Villarino and Falkner Lakes. We did our best to delight in the drive, and pulled over to the viewpoints even though there weren’t really any views.

We were actually staying about 30 minutes from the town of San Martín de los Andes at the Río Hermoso boutique hotel in the Lanín national Park. We found the sign for the hotel and turned down the bumpy, dirt road. We were in the middle of nowhere, and it was fantastic.

Checking in to the beautiful Rio Hermoso Hotel

Set best on the banks of the Río Hermoso (Beautiful River), was the hotel we’d be staying at for the next 2 nights. We were greeted with a warm welcome from the staff, and a pot of tea to delight in while gazing out at the river. Our bedroom was huge and tastefully decorated. The kingsized bed was the best we’d had and the balcony overlooking the river was a good touch.

The setting of Río Hermoso was private and intimate and a place to completely unwind. There was nothing to do but delight in the nature, which is exactly what we did…

Our beautiful room at Rio Hermoso boutique hotel – complete with bathtub!
San Martín to Lake Lolog

The Lake district is one of the most popular fly-fishing spots in the world. It didn’t matter that we were visiting at the very end of the fishing season, by the time we got to Río Hermoso Hotel, Nick was identified to get out onto the river and have a few casts.

The drive from our hotel to the town of San Martín de los Andes was gorgeous. The sun peeked out from the clouds and the scenery looked completely different from the days before. The lake was glistening and there were some really good lookout points.

Beautiful views of the lake on our drive to San Martin de los Andes

San Martín was a quaint little town with a good beach, lots of shops geared towards fishing and other outdoor activities, and various restaurants and hotels.

It didn’t take long to find a rental store and between our basic Spanish abilities and Google Translate, we got Nick kitted out with fishing equipment and a permit in no time! We were given some local guidance that the river leading into Lake Lolog was an outstanding spot to catch some fish. After driving for about 30 minutes, the asphalt soon turned to dirt. This was a proper road to a fishing lake!

Having a fishing permit is a should in this area

Being out in nature is what we wanted from our seven Lakes road trip and we found the ideal spot to do just that. The river had a sandy embankment ideal for a picnic. various birds were flying overhead, including kingfishers who were spotting their meal from high in the trees. It was such a peaceful spot.

The ideal fishing spot!

I cooked up some lunch on our portable stove while Nick was casting out into little pools in the river. We spent about 4 hours riverside accompanied by a dog, some birds and a couple of locals, the only thing missing was a fish!

The ideal picnic spot!

We returned to the Río Hermoso hotel where I dined on freshly caught trout. It numerous not have been caught by Nick, but it was delicious! Nick chose the venison and we chatted about our time in the region over a bottle of red wine and decadent dessert. The following morning, still anxious to get a bite, Nick headed out to the river next to our hotel and gave it another go. typically this river is outstanding for catching fish, but not this time.

Nick may not have caught any fish here, but his luck would change when he headed out with Wilderness Patagonia – the pros!

Traveller Tips:

Having a rental car is by far the best way to see this region. You can stop where you want to and get out to take photos and to stretch. Plus, it’s a great way to get to those far away fishing spots! We rented our car through Hertz Argentina, and are delighted we had it for this part of Argentina.

If you can, try totime your visit for the summer months, or take on season. We were in the offseason pretty much, which is why we had rain. numerous Argentines come here during the high season (summer and winter) so keep that in mind when planning your trip.

You can rent fishing gear in San Martín de los Andes. For 24 hours, the cost of a rod and is 450 pesos ($29), and flies are $1 each. A one day fishing license (yes, make sure you get one, we were asked by the rangers) costs 480 pesos ($31).

Bring a mess kit and pocket stove with you for this road trip. There are various places where you can pull over and make yourself some lunch!

We stayed at Correntoso Lake and River hotel and Río Hermoso boutique hotel and highly recommend them both for service, quality and location. If you’re on a smaller budget, or if you want to stay in Villa La Angostura town, check out Market Apartments.

A huge thank-you to Destino Argentina for assisting with our accommodation and rental car during our trip to Bariloche! The rest of the Lake district we planned, booked and paid for ourselves. All opinions and thoughts remain our own, despite any complimentary services received.

Bacuit Grill Bar and restaurant in El Nido, Palawan

We were magnetized by the big, bold letters posted in front of a seaside restaurant along Bacuit Bay. It said “Happy Hour.” We were just there for dinner but the idea of getting two glasses of cocktail drinks for the price of one was strong enough to add some alcohol in our supposedly sober dinner.

Bacuit Grill Bar and restaurant is an open-air dining place perfect for those who wish to see the sunset at the bay. It is on the far end of the bay so you might find yourself walking along the beach for quite some time just to get here. Its wooden columns and chairs, bamboo ceiling, and nipa walls and roofs provide that tropical beach ambiance. The sound of the waves rolling made our stay here more relaxing. As darkness fell, candles provided enough light for friendly conversations. I guess that’s the strongest appeal of this place — it allows customers to enjoy food without letting them forget that they are on the beach!

Bacuit Bay
We somehow predicted, while observing other people’s orders, that the serving was humongous. While my friends ordered pasta, I had Crab in sweet and Sour Sauce and rice. As expected, it was big. My blogging buddy and I had to share coz there was no way I could finish that one crab without dying due to high blood pressure. LOL. Besides,  it was really good for 2-3 persons. The sound of the crab’s shell as we break them to scoop out the meat was music to us as we were really starved coming from a five-hour trip from Puerto Princesa. The smell assured us that it was fresh — it did not smell malansa. It tasted good, too. I just wished they added something more to the dish. The crab was great but there was nothing special. The sauce was a letdown, too. It actually tasted like it came out of one of those bottles of ready-to-serve sauces.

But on the upside, where can you find a full serving of fresh, delicious crabs for only P190? I’m certainly not complaining. 🙂

Crab in sweet and Sour Sauce (P190)
I also had a taste of my friends’ pasta dishes (carbonara and meat sauce). They were good. That’s all I can say. nothing special. Tasted exactly what you would expect from an average restaurant. but the serving was really big.

Cocktails and pasta
I guess at this point, it is important to note that Bacuit Grill Bar and Resto is more of a bar than a sit-down restaurant. The food is great for the price because they offer generous servings. If dinner is what you want, this will satisfy but not blow you away. but if it’s drinks that you’re after, maybe it’s the place to be. but the real selling point of the place is its excellent, romantic location and ambiance.

HOW much DOES IT expense TO travel WESTERN EUROPE?

Last Updated: 05/27/18 | may 27th, 2018

Europe. It’s an costly location as well as costs vary greatly depending upon exactly how far north, east, south or west your travel. Europe covers a significant area of the world with several visa zones as well as several currencies. For 20 euros, you can get a personal space in Greece. For that exact same cost in Paris, you may get a 16 person dorm room. You can eat for a few euros in Spain or Hungary, however a sit-down meal in Italy will expense around 15 euros, as well as triple that in Norway!

I’ve been going to Europe for close to ten years now.

A trip to Europe isn’t cheap, however there are lots of methods to cut down costs. considering that Europe is so big, today I want to talk about traveling around Western Europe as well as the Eurozone countries.

One of the most asked concerns I get is “how much does it expense to travel to Europe?”

Well, today, let’s talk about planning a trip to Europe!

How much do things cost?

Here are some general costs for things in Europe, since as I said, costs can vary a great deal depending upon where you are:

Accommodation: In a lot of Western European countries, expect to pay 25–35 euros per night for a dorm room. (Though in Greece as well as Spain, it’s only 10–20 euros per night.) In Scandinavia, expect to pay around 30–35 Euros per night. In England, costs are normally around 20–30 pounds per night.

Food: Food costs vary as wildly as lodging costs. affordable fast-food meals expense 9–15 euros, while restaurant meals expense around 15–25 euros. Nicer establishments will expense 30 euros or more. You can cook your food for a week for around 65 euros>.

Transportation: The simplest method to get around Europe is by train. Trains link every major part of Europe, as well as they’re commonly extremely cheap. High-speed trains, though, can expense over 100 euros. try to get the regional or sluggish trains for more affordable prices! The increase of affordable airlines like Ryanair, EasyJet, as well as Transavia has made flying around Europe in a hurry truly cheap. For flights, expect to pay around 50 euros if you book in advance. transportation around a lot of cities is only 1–2 euros.

Activities: a lot of museums as well as trips begin at around 14 euros. It’s cheaper, of course, in eastern Europe. Full-day trips expense 35–100 euros. costs vary significantly per country, so it’s difficult to provide a great general expense of this budget plan item.

How to save money in Western Europe

Picnic – Europe has a great deal of small shops where you can be premade sandwiches or components to make your own. get some food, eat outside, as well as enjoy the city go by. It’s a more affordable as well as a lot more pleasurable method to eat.

Eat regional as well as affordable – Not into picnicking? That’s OK, there are other methods to save money on food. eat at regional sandwich shops, pizza parlors, Maoz, Wok to Walks, outside street vendors, as well as the like. avoiding restaurants as well as eating at a great deal of the regional “grab ‘n go” locations will provide you a taste of the regional cuisine at a much more affordable price.

Couchsurf – Hostels can add up truly quick in Europe. If you don’t have any type of good friends you can stay with, think about utilizing the service Couchsurfing, which lets you link with locals who will let you stay with them for free.

Fly affordable – If you understand where you’re going as well as a train won’t do, try to book flights early. You can commonly get one-euro fares from lots of of the discount rate airlines like Transavia, Easyjet, Air Berlin, as well as Ryanair. MORE: There are lots of affordable methods to get across Europe.

Drink less – Those five-euro beers truly add up. hit delighted hour or pick as well as select when you party. Hostel bars are a great location to get affordable drinks, or you can get your alcohol at the supermarket. Partying your method across the continent will ruin your bank balance in no time.

Take the complimentary trips – one of the excellent things about Europe is that you can discover complimentary walking trips in all the major cities. They can be a excellent method to see the city attractions, discover some history, as well as get your bearings without costs any type of money. nearly every city in Europe has a complimentary walking excursion available. Your hostel or the tourism board will have details!

Camp in a garden – A extremely great camping service certain is Campspace (formerly Camp in My Garden), which enables you to pitch a camping tent in someone’s backyard for complimentary or a nominal charge (around 4-10 EUR). This is a new service that started in 2010 however a lot more as well as a lot more people are signing up for it each day. all of the garden owners have profiles that tell you what services as well as facilities they offer.

Get a Rail Pass – Eurail Passes have saved me numerous dollars when I utilized them. If you are traveling far distances as well as with lots of countries, they are a excellent deal. Here’s a lot more info exactly how to pick a Eurail pass.

Get a city vacationer card – regional tourism offices problem a vacationer card for all their attractions, tours, as well as restaurants. This card provides you complimentary entry as well as considerable discount rates on all the attractions as well as trips in a city, complimentary regional public transportation (a significant plus), as well as discount rates at a few restaurants as well as buying malls. They save a ton of money. If you plan on doing a great deal of sightseeing, get one of these cards.

Rideshare – extremely prominent as well as extensive in Europe, I did this to get around Switzerland, France, as well as UK. BlaBlaCar, the greatest website, links chauffeurs as well as bikers as well as lets you get around much more affordable than a bus or train. Moreover, this method is fantastic for getting off the highways, seeing a lot more the countryside, as well as satisfying locals. It’s money-saving as well as much a lot more interesting than taking the train or bus!

What’s a great everyday budget plan in Europe?

Recently, I went with Amsterdam, Greece, Italy, as well as Hungary. In 59 days of traveling, I spent 4,317 euros, which averages out to 73.17 euros per day. That includes a few flights, lots of a great meal, as well lots of drinks on Ios, a few nights of personal spaces (it was my birthday, after all!), as well as some unforeseen purchases (a jacket, a new iphone charger, as well as new headphones).

So exactly how much does it expense to travel Europe?

On a backpacker budget, if you were avoiding flights, sometimes Couchsurfing, staying in affordable dorms, as well as cooking a lot of of your meals, you might typical between 40-50 Eur per day. It would be a tight budget plan however you might absolutely do it. one of the greatest costs in Europe is lodging so decreasing that expense will assist a lot!

However, if you desired some versatility in your schedule, organized to eat out only stay in hostels, as well as see a great deal of places, plan for around 70 euros a day.

If you’re going to stay in only personal spaces or Airbnb in addition to eat at sit down restaurants every meal, I’d state budget plan better to 100 euros to be safe.

***
A trip to Western Europe can expense a great deal of money. It’s never going to be a affordable area of the world to travel however with some wise money administration as well as comply with the suggestions in this post, Western Europe can ended up being at least an budget-friendly location to visit. manage your costs as well as you can be able to see anything!

Our Week in Bangkok – A Haven For digital Nomads

For us, Bangkok has always felt somewhat like a second home. It’s a place we know very well and have returned to six times during our travels. each time we land there a wave of nostalgia comes over us as we remember backpacking Thailand in 2008, which was the start of our travelling lifestyle. We arrived in Bangkok from Vancouver as naive 24 year olds ready to take on the world! (or at least, southern Asia)

A couple of young Goats, Day 1 in Bangkok 2008! (when it was mostly about partying!)
When we returned recently, we were no longer young, wide-eyed budget backpackers. this time around we were older, wiser travel veterans. Our feelings towards Bangkok were the same, however. We were still in awe of the street life and reveled in the craziness surrounding us. We soaked up the smells (some better than others), and explored new neighbourhoods that we hadn’t had a chance to in the past.

The much more mature version of us went to temples this time around

There are so numerous sights to see and things to do in Bangkok, but our main reason for returning to Bangkok, was to catch up on some health & wellness, purchase some much-needed products, check out with old friends, and of course, eat delectable Thai food.

As we continue with our digital Nomad lifestyle, finding ourselves in countries with proper healthcare and necessities that we need is the exception, rather than the norm.

Prior to this recent week in Bangkok, we had been travelling around Colombia, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, the UK, Greece and Kyrgyzstan, and aside from the UK, the rest of the countries aren’t exactly known for their healthcare. Or, because we were travelling too fast, we didn’t have a chance to stop and make appointments.

Too busy trekking in Chile to check out the doctor!
And forget about purchasing any electronics in South America – it’s way too expensive there.

Bangkok is our haven. It has everything we could want, or need while on the road!

Visiting a Dentist & doctor in Bangkok

In Canada, when we had dental coverage, we went to the dentist 2 times a year. These days, our trips to the dentist are a few and far between. We were overdue for a check-up and because Bangkok is known for being a hub for medial tourism (especially for Europeans and Australians), we chose this would be an outstanding city to have our dental work done.

After doing some research, and seeing that our pal Johnny goes here too, we chose Thantakit international dental Center. The office was clean and the staff were friendly. We both had a check-up and a cleaning done, and I had 2 cavities filled.

As with our dental experience in Mexico, everything went very well. Not only is Bangkok known for its high quality international dental centers (with dentists and hygienists trained abroad) but the cost is a fraction of the price compared to places like Canada, the USA, the UK and Australia.

If you’re considering having dental work done abroad, certainly check out Bangkok. Do your own research and choose a dental center that looks good to you.

Next up was an annual doctor visit.

Dealing with women’s health while on the road can be a challenging task, one I’ve had to endure for 8 years now. another thing Bangkok is known for are its private international hospitals with high hygiene standards. So, I figured this would be a good spot to opt for an annual check-up.

I was best in the fact that the medical facility was spick n’ span, and that the equipment was modern, but the bedside manner left something to be desired…

I went to Bumrungrad international Hospital, and although the medical facility itself offers services on par with international standards, the overall experience wasn’t great.

They don’t take appointments, so I had to wait for 3 hours until I saw the doctor. It was so busy that the gynecologist was running from one room to the next, making me feel like just another number. because it’s a private hospital, I had to pay for every little thing – including having the results given to me when I returned 2 days later.

So, terrific standards, not-so-great service. Regardless, I was able to check that off of my list of things to do! If you have any major health issues or any sort of emergencies, however, Bumrungrad medical facility is highly regarded by expats and foreigners.

Shopping

We’re not materialistic, and in fact, we live a very minimalistic lifestyle. But, there are someitems that we need for work in purchase to create videos and content on our website.

About a year ago we sold our Phantom 3 drone as it was hindering our travels – it was bulky, loud, hard to carry, challenging to set up, etc. before travelling to Bangkok we had talked about getting another drone as the technology had changed and they were now much smaller and quieter.

We had just been invited on a scuba diving trip in Indonesia by the tourism board, and because we’d be going to some amazing islands, we thought having a drone would be a terrific way to capture the charm from above!

If we were living at home in Canada, it would be easy to just go to the store and purchase a drone. But, because we’re living and travelling abroad all of the time, it’s not so easy. Thankfully, Bangkok has a DJI retailer and after wandering down some back streets, we found the “shop” – which was actually just someone’s house!

This is the DJI “shop” in Bangkok – a small office attached to this guy’s home!

We left with a new DJI spark Drone, and a controller. It’s very small, simple and easy to set up, and fairly quiet.

It’s our little “mosquito”.

Next up on our list of purchases was a new iPhone. We purchased our first iphone in 2016, making us the last people we knew to get a smart phone – even our parents had one! Not only were we late to the iphone game, but we only had 1 between us. That’s right, we’re in our 30’s and we shared a phone.

The main reason we chose to purchase another one was (again) because of the Indonesia trip that we were invited on. It was a scuba diving trip, so just Nick was going, and leaving me behind in Canggu Bali without a phone wasn’t an option.

First we tried Craigslist in Bangkok to look for used phones, followed by a recommendation by our expat pal Johnny to check out MBK Retail Mall. This place is huge. We finally figured out which floor the electronics were on (4th in case you’re wondering) and began our search for an authentic iPhone.

Eventually we found a brand new iphone 6s plus for me, and after checking out this site, we identified that it was in fact a real iphone and not a fake. A trip to MBK is something you only want to do if you need to purchase a particular item, or if you’re a shopping / mall kind of person. After a check out here we were thoroughly exhausted.

Apart from electronics, Bangkok was a terrific place to purchase some clothing and stock up on some medicine that we were in need of.

Eating All The Foods

Arriving in Bangkok was a breath of fresh air in terms of food options. Although we love Greek food, Latin food, and pub grub in the UK, much of it is heavy and greasy. being able to dine on rice, noodles, vegetables and tofu was a welcomed change. To us, eating is one of the top things to do in Thailand!

A yummy meal at Northeast Restaurant, which is one of our new faves

Thai food is some of the best cuisine in the entire world. during our first few trips to Bangkok, we would only eat street food (as it was cheaper) and for that reason missed out on trying the broad variety of dishes on offer.

To give you an example of just how “budget” we were: we’d eat 30 baht ($0.90) Pad Thai on the street when we were 24 years old in purchase to save as much money as possible. this time around, we were eating 120 baht ($3.65) curries and flavourful meals that we had never even heard of.

For $2.75 more, we were actually enjoying our meals in Thailand, and were able to experience a broad variety of dishes. Of course, we still found a few tasty noodle stands on the street for 60 baht ($1.80)!

Noodle stands in Thailand are the best! No matter what, we’ll always love street food here

Some of our new preferred restaurants we recommend you check out are:

Saladang Market in Silom for lunch, Northeast (our preferred restaurant), Moo Moo Eatery, Ros Niyom, red wine connection and any busy street stalls that you see! For craft beer, check out The Commons and for craft beer and cocktails with an fantastic view, don’t miss Vertigo & Moon Bar.

Where to stay in Bangkok

During our younger years, we would always stay in the crazy party area around Koh San Road. this time around, we chose the Silom neighbourhood, which is best near stunning Lumphini Park. There are loads of restaurants and markets nearby, and we were staying best near the MTR which gave us access to other areas of the city.

A lazy day at Lumphini Park
Figuring out where to stay in Bangkok can be challenging as there are so numerous options. We stayed at, and recommend, these two different places:

Siri Sathorn Residences

This hotel has house styled rooms (suites), implying they are larger than a regular hotel room and have a kitchen and a living room, complete with a couch and TV. There’s a totally free onsite gym and fitness center and an outdoor pool. There’s also a restaurant and spa. We loved the location of this place as it was close to so numerous restaurants and public transportation as well. Also, the staff are very friendly here and really valuable as well!

D Varee Xpress Pula Silom

Still in the Silom area, this hotel is down a side alleyway, away from the street traffic. The locaion is amazing, best near malls, restaurants, bars and the BTS line for transportation. The rooms here aren’t huge, but they are big enough, very clean, comfortable and quiet. The staff here are very good and they give you a small breakfast for totally free in the morning (juice box, bun and banana).

Moving On…

Bangkok is one of the best places to check out in Thailand, and after a very productive week in the city, we had finished our digital Nomad errands and it was time for us to relocation on. We love the city – the vibe is unlike anywhere else in the world. But, it’s a city, one that’s extremely busy and hectic. For us, a week in Bangkok is enough.

We made our way to the airport and began our journey to the island of Koh Samui, a place we would be living for 1.5 months!

The trick beach of Matinloc Island: El Nido, Palawan, Philippines

The towering gray karst cliffs surrounding me went ignored as I stood in the middle of a pocket of white beach on one edge of Matinloc Island. I was at the so called “Secret Beach,” the location that, according to legend, influenced author Alex Garland to compose his book The beach when he stayed in El Nido.

The trick beach is a piece of paradise concealed by the cliffs as well as is only available with a narrow crevice. One has to swim with this opening to reach this place, shining even under the shade produced when the sun kisses the cliffs. I wished to take everything in when I was there. It was beyond gorgeous certainly however all I might believe about was: “I ought to have brought a water-proof camera.”

Cliffs, cliffs, cliffs…

Finding the Secret

Fifteen minutes earlier, the bad Traveler as well as his six bad buddies were feeling a bit bit sleepy after our big, satisfying lunch at Talisay beach. Our boat was smoothly breaking the waves towards one more white beach as well as the noise of the engine roaring as well as the waves slapping the side of the boat were producing a melody that was relaxing, hypnotic, practically sedating.

Another boat waiting on tourists who were at the trick Beach!
As if the previous islands as well as beaches we saw were not enough, the boat trip introduced us to much more examples of charm as well as question as the cliffs displayed all kind of gray as well as the water danced, playing with all the colors in the blue to eco-friendly spectrum. I was content. combating the drowsiness with all my might, I chosen up my video camera as well as took pictures of the welcoming rocks.

Our boat stopped best where other boats seemed to have been lingering the past hour. Our boatman announced, “Secret Beach!”

“Where?” asked the curious friend. “Where’s the beach? It’s all water as well as cliffs here.”

“That’s why it’s called trick Beach! It’s concealed,” responded to the sarcastic friend.

“Well, if we’re going there. It won’t be trick anymore,” joked one more sarcastic friend.

“So where do we go?” asked the impatient friend.

“There,” the boatman directed in a hole in one of the cliffs.

Hole in the wall! The one as well as only entrance to the trick Beach.
“You have got to be kidding me!” exclaimed my cowardly friend. “So we will have to swim down as well as with that hole? I’m dead!”

“Will I even sink?” wondered my not-so-skinny friend.

While my buddies were speaking excitedly about the piece of heaven behind the cliff in front of us, I was just there believing regretfully, “I ought to have brought a water-proof camera.” bad me.

Into the Secret

Armed with goggles, flippers, a snorkel, as well as a life vest, we jumped off of the boat, swam to that karst cliff, as well as made it with the hole. The very first to go was my buddy Ces. I was second. It was a breeze for me, which was a surprise. I just swam directly with it. You have to be cautious when you do it, though, since I might picture exactly how unpleasant it would be if I stopped swimming best under the arc or if my back hit the “ceiling.” That might scrape a swimmer’s back quite badly.

The challenging part for me was AFTER I got with the opening. While I was swimming, it all of a sudden got shallow. A big, huge rock awaits best after the opening as well as the waves are so strong at this point that they might push the swimmer best onto that rock. It was truly challenging trying to fight the waves.

Once I regained my composure, I made my method across the shallow water to the white shore. All the while, my deal with was buried in the water as I get blown away by what was underneath. It was a fantastic snorkeling place. There were all kind of vibrant fishes as well as other marine life forms, enjoying the water as well as the areas in between rocks as well as corals.

The trick Beach

When I hit the beach, I instantly stood up as well as saw my buddy Ces, the very first to leave the boat, standing with a concerned look on her deal with as well as a bloody wound on her best leg. Apparently, she hit the rock near the opening (the one I discussed before) as well as it scraped her knee quite badly. Regardless, she continued to check out the location with us. What a warrior!

The trick beach is not just a white strip of sand. There are rocks beautifully dotting the area, as if intentionally. Behind these huge rocks is much more space. The location was like a round space surrounded by naturally difficult walls as well as eco-friendly ornaments. one of the very first things that went into my head was: exactly how good it would be to have a personal beach celebration here! as well as then I believed about Survivor as well as exactly how it would offer a great location for the Tribal Council.

For a moment, I sat on the beach as well as enabled myself to get drowned in fantasy as well as inspiration. I started believing about stories as well as ideas for films as well as short fiction. I started wondering exactly how it would feel like to spend a few days right here — just here. I would gladly do that as long as I have adequate food as well as water. I wondered exactly how this location was discovered, or who. So numerous things ran with my head as I looked up as well as stared at the cliffs blocking the light. as well as then it dawned on me once again —- I ought to have brought a water-proof camera.

Damn.
